Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Friday 12th February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Two-factor authentication (TFA) is now required when I sign on to my Amex accounts, but oddly not my partner’s.

Yesterday, I checked the box to say that I trusted my device, so that it would no longer be required when using that device. Today, I have to use TFA again from the same device.

Don’t you just love Amex’s IT!

  • Anna says:

On the subject of the HH card, my new one has just arrived. Current one expires this month so I was starting to get a bit twitchy given all the recent card changes ….

    • Russ says:

Bet you were, we all are. It’s a real useful card.

    • Brighton Belle says:

Us dumb ones that didn’t apply for that card are patiently waiting for a second coming . . . which seems to have been cancelled

  • Paul says:

Data point – I have just noticed horizon mbna only giving me 2.71 Barbados Dollar to GBP. Curve gives me 2.77. I always assumed Horizon would be same as curve, or better.

    • Roberto says:

Was it on the same day and time?
Fx rates could of changed if not.

      • Paul says:

Yes. I checked dates around too and same. Been very little fluctuation in exchange rate.

    • Travel Strong says:

“Curve in the week, Horizon on the weekends”. ~ my fx spend motto.

      • Paul says:

I’m getting 2.72 at weekends so interestingly curve coming out top at weekends too. Also did a test on UK bank debit card (barclays and hsbc) and get 2.65.

        • Travel Strong says:

Interesting – I thought this would make it more expensive:

“If you make a withdrawal or purchase over the weekend and Curve performs a currency conversion, we’ll use the rate from Friday and apply a surcharge as the Forex markets are closed. The weekend counts as Friday 23:59 GMT – Sunday 23:59 GMT.

For transactions where both the transaction and the underlying payment cards are in GBP, USD or EUR, the foreign exchange fee will be 0.5%. For all other currencies, the foreign exchange fee will be 1.5%.”

          • Paul says:

that tallies then. a drop from 2.77 to 2.72 equates to 1.5% charge. Still cheaper than Horizon.. just.

    • YC says:

I find curve to be more ‘live’ pricing. Other cards are closer to the standard mastercard/visa interbank rate (end of data pricing?)

      • Harrier25 says:

Would be interesting to see how Revolut and Starling stack up on the Exchange Rate. When I visited Madeira on October last year, I found that Curve was a few Euro cents better than Starling, which surprised me.

  • Grant says:

Virgin miles / voucher query – if my wife and I both have a voucher each sitting in our FC accounts can they both be used on the same booking, for a family of four, for example?

A further linked question, if we are able to do that, can we supply the miles unequally from both accounts? I have a large balance of miles whereas my wife only has a smaller balance.

    Thanks

    • Paul says:

They have done this for me in the past, but I think it may depend you you speak to.

    • ChrisC says:

They can and have done it where they can ‘charge’ an entire sector to an individual account but not pool your points (though I think golds can pool)

So say you needed 200k for 4 * 50k sectors they could charge you 150k and her 50k (assuming you each had more than that) but not if you had 175k and her 25k

    • BLT says:

I had 3 vouchers in my account. Booked return UC to MIA for family of 4. They were happy to use all 3 vouchers to upgrade 3 of us from PE to UC and the 4th paid full points. This worked out better than 2-4-1.5 and only using 2 vouchers.

  • NC says:

So do we have any more certainty yet about which types of transactions the HH card is no longer awarding points for? Some recent comments suggested Ernie via Bendy was no longer earning points. But what about our favourite 6012s?

  • Dan says:

    Hi Rob,

You wrote a vcouple of years back about the Vueling card offered in France. I have just had a letter saying that the partnership between Avios and Sofinco (the issuer) will be ending on 10 April with the cards being dead from that point.

Is a bit of a disappointment, at 0.8 avios per EUR it matches Amex in France but is much cheaper (EUR 24 per year vs 5 pcm for Amax Blue and has been a nice little earner.

Weirdly the cards are still showing on Sofinco’s website. I always wanted to get the premium BA one which I think you also did an article about at some point but I guess it was not allowed to have both BA and Vueling cards at once (I applied several times and never recieved the card or notice that I had been refused).

Fingers crossed for a new Avios offer here in the near future!

  • Benilyn says:

Been a while since a verified a Creative card on bendy. Does the C-XXXX code appear with the X’s on the bill in a few days, or do you need to call up to get them? Right now it is Pending CRV*Card verific

  • EvilGazebo says:

Question: I have an IHG booking in the summer made using a UK IHG MasterCard free night voucher

    • EvilGazebo says:

Fat fingers…. The event we were attending has been rescheduled – if I cancel the booking the voucher is lost right? It looks like I can move the date online but only in the same or next month?

      • EvilGazebo says:

Not doing well with this post 🥺 Meant to say the voucher expired end of 2020.

        • Optimus Prime says:

IF the voucher expired the only way to keep it is contact the hotel and ask them to move the dates (assuming you still want to go there once you can travel again).
