The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 9th February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Has anyone heard anything about further extension of BA status levels? I’ve had my membership extended by one year as did everyone, but as flights continue to be cancelled with the ongoing restrictions I’m now thinking it unlikely I will get to do much travelling in my new membership year…

    • ChrisC says:

I don’t see BA doing anything for a good few months yet.

They were one of the last airlines to do anything about status or reducing qualification levels last year and I don’t see them rushing to the front of the queue to do anything this year.

    • Ja says:

Some of us didn’t get extensions. My year finishes 8 July 2021. So I hope they do something.

  • Benilyn says:

Super late to this but signed up to Ernie.
    1) I made payments with non account holder named debit card in Bendy. Ernie rejected but the bendy app accepted it… I hope they reverse.
    2) Beardie via bendy no fronting works fine with no charges?

    • FFoxSake says:

      1) Why do that? You can go direct to Ernie with a debit card. No need for Bendy.
      2) It used to. I can’t say for sure now as that’s not my current route. Others might confirm.

      • Amar says:

I might be missing something – why go direct with a debit card?

      • Benilyn says:

Think I wasn’t clear, 1) Ernie account in my name. The Bendy is someone another name, the underlying credit card is mine.

        • Genghis says:

Name and address need to match.

          • Benilyn says:

@Genghis ta. Any idea on Q2?

          • stevenhp1987 says:

Just address needs to match. Can use a card from any cardholder on NS&I so long as it’s registered to your address.

As for Q2. Should be fine.

    • Amar says:

Yes works fine and they will reverse soon (usually 1-2 days but takes longer to show up on your statement)

  • Stephan says:

Anyone tried used the D&D offer on their meal kits, looking for Inspiration for this weekend..

    • BSI1978 says:

Plumped for the German Gymnasium one; was ok – would have been preferable if they labelled the items as there was a tad of guesswork involved! Beware their delivery charge of £19 is a tad punchy; there was a discounted delivery code doing the rounds which stacked with the Amex 20% offer so possible to offset this.

      • Rob says:

If you’ve got kids, we had a Pizza Pilgrims ‘make your own pizza from all this stuff’ kit the other week which was fun. The dough is pre-made and all the ingredients are fresh and need to be used within 2 days of delivery.

(Disclaimer – I know the guy who owns Pizza Pilgrims and mine was sent as a gift.)

        • Dave says:

Pizza Pilgrims one is pretty good. Another good one is Dishoom’s breakfast naan rolls. Little more fiddly than Pizza Pilgrims given the number of ingredients but still easy to do.

    • Kevin C says:

We had one of the Bluebird ones from D&D. It was very good. A lot of different plastic bags, including an unlabelled one with oil in.

For Platinum members, the chef at home series is excellent and if you’re interested in that sort of thing, the hosted webinar Q&A with the chef is great.

    • Travel Strong says:

Another vote for Pizza Pilgrims here.

Also TGI Friday’s at home was excellent! (Chose chicken sesame strips, and did some Donald Russel steaks on the BBQ for the main. Haven’t tried their other offerings, yet!)

    • Sam says:

Where is this offer? On an Amex card?

  • Nigel W says:

    Wanted to check..

Does the Nectar/Avios offer of 500 bonus points and double nectar card points work if you transfer some Avios from one account to your nectar card and then transfer it to another avios account?

    • Rob says:

I would guess so – nothing to lose.

    • John says:

      Read the T&Cs.

By my reading, you will get the double nectar points but not the 500 avios.

      • Nigel W says:

That’s what i would prefer anyway, but thanks for clarifying!

      • TGLoyalty says:

is it double the base or double all earning including the weekly bonus offers

        • ChrisC says:

          Base only

          • TGLoyalty says:

Far less exciting then since base earnings is f all.

          • AJA says:

@TG but don’t forget it is for 2x base spend until 19 April. Barely 2 weeks in and I have earned 152 bonus nectar points (ignoring fuel, not sure if that qualifies for the bonus?) which is practically 1/10 of the initial transfer of 1600 I transferred across to BA

  • Yuff says:

I see the latest suggestions the government are considering are going to kill family holidays if it goes ahead.
Covid tests on day 2 and 8 for all passengers , not just countries on the red list. No doubt a negative test to travel there and back, so for a family of 4 £1600 in rip off tests ……..lol

    • Anna says:

It can’t last indefinitely. But they are saying a lot and doing very little at the moment (vaccine delivery aside) …

      • meta says:

They are also apparently keeping test to release scheme… What’s the point then of a paid test on day 8 when you can pay for one on day 5?

        • Nick says:

Test to release isn’t available for arrivals for certain countries. In this case you’d have to take the day 8 one but the D5 one wouldn’t be available.

          • meta says:

I wasn’t talking about red-list countries. I was talking about everyone else.

In any case, as just announced the test to release scheme will involve you also having to take a test on day 8. So you’ll need to take three tests, but are free to roam after receiving results of a test on day 5 before taking the last one on day 8.

    • Brian says:

There aren’t/weren’t going to be any family holidays for a few months regardless. There aren’t that many countries where Brits are allowed for holidays anyway.

      • Anna says:

No one without kids is going to pay school holiday prices unless they absolutely have to. The outlook for tour operators is catastrophic if they can’t sell family holidays.

        • Brian says:

That depends on how desperate they are to get away. A lot of people have saved thousands over the last few months so they’ll be more open to spending a lot more than they would have done in the past on a holiday.

          • Anna says:

I wouldn’t care how much I had saved up, if I had the flexibility I would choose September/October every time over July/August when prices are more than double and there’s a chance of decent UK weather!

    • Anna says:

What if you went on holiday in the 6 week break and then worked from home and kept the children indoors for 10/14 days when you got back? Do you still have to have a negative test before you’re allowed to go out? I can’t see how that could be enforced (might have missed something though as haven’t read the proposals.

      • Sandra says:

I read somewhere yesterday Tui reckon that 80% of their summer holiday bookings will go ahead which may be optimistic on their part unless they know something the rest of us don’t!

        • Brian says:

          They don’t know anything. Deluded

I wouldn’t pay to much attention to a travel company’s view on how a global pandemic will progress. A lot of their comments will be based on trying to retain positive sentiment etc. I doubt even they believe the nonsense they’re coming out with

      • Brian says:

I think it’ll be the cost rather than the enforceability that’ll put people off. I’m guessing that most people probably don’t quarantine anyway (some brainless types probably still go to work and risk their jobs over a holiday)

      • TGLoyalty says:

Yes you will have to take tests at day 2 (£1000 fine for missing it) and day 8 (£2k fine for missing it and extended to 14 days)

If this lasts past March 31st it’ll be devastating for this summers travel.

        • Anna says:

Yes – another factor is that a lot of people have moved holidays from last summer to this summer or will have annual leave booked that they can’t move. So even if travel opens up in the autumn, a lot of people simply won’t be able to take advantage of it.

          • yorkieflyer says:

Working Time directive was amended last year to allow annual leave to be deferred to 2022

        • Brian says:

“If this lasts past March 31st it’ll be devastating for this summers travel.”

This summers travel was already going to be devastated anyway. It’s been obvious for a while now.

          • Sandra says:

@yorkieflyer I think the working time directive amendment only applies if your employer didn’t allow/cancelled leave for operational reasons during the pandemic (key workers mainly) and not if you just didn’t want to take it because you didn’t see the point of holiday when you couldn’t go anywhere/had to spend it at home.

  • The Original Nick. says:

Nectar to Avios Question: Would it be possible to transfer my Nectar balance to my partners BAEC account?

    • John says:

You can transfer any nectar to any baec if you are able to log in to both accounts and have access to the phone number (or email address if no phone number) listed in the nectar account.

    • Rob says:

      Yes

  • Claire says:

Question about ba evoucher. Are they replacing the future travel vouchers and can you use them online. Will need to cancel a 2for1 ba companion booking and trying to work out if I ask for 2 for1 back with cash. I am likely to want to use as soon as flights are released and Rob said this was an issue with future travel voucher as you need tonphone up, not sure if same with evoucher? Thanks

    • AJA says:

BA are slowly updating the FTV so that it can be used online however that does not apply to Avios bookings so cancelling your 2-4-1 booking for a FTV will require you to phone up to use it.

Also to get everything back for free it will require BA to cancel the flight. If you want to cancel your option is to pay £35 per passenger as normal. If you want to avoid paying the £35 per passenger cancellation fee you are limited to taking a FTV.

  • Steve R says:

Up to10k of Nectar points for switching to Sainsbury’s Energy on 2 year fix. One year fix also available

    https://www.sainsburysenergy.com/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=nectar&utm_campaign=jan2021_solus

    • DJ says:

Not the cheapest around, you could easily get £50 referral bonus with much cheaper suppliers.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Look past points for energy as they are often the worst overall deal.

Like octopus virgin deal is far worse than being referred by a friend which can be worse still than comparison sites

      • Stagger Lee says:

Indeed they are. I got quote with them just after the Nectar-Avios thing was announced and they were only slightly worse than my current supplier but that would possibly have bene outweighed by getting the bonus Avios.

I checked earlier today and they have changed the tariff and it is now far worse .

it’s no sale for me at the moment
