The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 9th February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does any use Lex leasing? We’re about to change lease vehicles and I’m trying to find out if I can pay them by credit card, like I have VW Finance & Santander previously.
This always throws our regular lease guy, I think I’m the only customer who insists on paying with a points earning credit card?

    • ChrisA says:

Hi Anna, how have you managed to use the credit card with VW – simply by calling? Did they take Amex? I’ve had no luck on either front but Revolut has softened the blow somewhat!

      • Tariq says:

Would be interested in this too as my next car is arriving, funded by VWFS, next month. Current one is with Lex and I haven’t found a way of paying by card.

        • Anna says:

My payment to VW is ridiculously low so it goes via Billhop and therefore towards our BAPP/targets. You just need bank details for the transfer. Santander doesn’t allow this so I pay them online with my IHG premium.
I think it’s possible to do this with most finance companies if you cancel your direct debit – they don’t seem to mind as long as they get a monthly payment. I just need to know if Lex would specifically block it, in which case they won’t be getting my custom.

          • Anna says:

My ultimate HFP fantasy is to buy a car outright on Amex like someone mentioned earlier – hopefully this will be possible in another couple of years when we can manage with one car between us!

    • BLT says:

I previously bought a Tesla and took out finance ( to guarantee a future trade in value) and managed to pay off the whole cost every month via Amex with no extra charges. Decent points earning!

      • BJ says:

Cannot recall the precise details but @Alan bought a Tesla a couple of years ago and got a substantial discount and interest free credit IIRC via an energy saving trust or something like that. I would be surprised if he didn’t make something from the payments too.

        • BLT says:

The Energy saving trust interest free loan is only available in Scotland, not the rest of the UK, for pure EV cars. Tesla don’t do discounts, unless for demo cars or previous generation stock.

      • Tom says:

Who was the finance with BLT? My Tesla finance is with Black Horse, doesnt seem to be a way of paying with an amex though.

        • memesweeper says:

Black Horse don’t. Their old provider of company finance did — I forgot the name of the firm — Alphera maybe? I paid my company car finance balance off with Amex.

        • BLT says:

It was with Alphera , part of BMW finance. It was nearly 5 years ago now, and I know they have been through quite a few different finance providers since then.

          • Matthew says:

BLT….not seen you around for a bit! How’s it going? Lee and I still reminisce about our fab time in Abu Dhabi! Oh how I wish we were all back on that yacht…

    • TGLoyalty says:

I know BMW finance accept Amex over the phone via an automated service.

      • MinR says:

How does this work? Do you just cancel your Direct Debit and pay monthly via Amex or do you have to request a change of payment method?

  • Andrew says:

Jet2 have cancelled all flights until 14 April – a sign of the airlines’ expectation of the minimum timescale of these latest travel restrictions.

    • Anna says:

Just as the Easter school holidays are ending – the economic fall out is going to be disastrous.

      • Harrier25 says:

Disastrous yes, but I still think or recovery will be quicker and more substantial than the EU’s, just as it was after the credit crunch crisis.

  • Tarmohamed says:

    “anything else on your mind”

Anyone able to recommend a good iOS app to manage multiple email accounts?

    • Sam says:

What’s wrong with the native one? Outlook works too seemingly with other providers

      • Tarmohamed says:

Too many email accounts, not able to organise them collectively. All based on gmail for business.

        • Harrier25 says:

Choose your favourite email account and redirect the others to that one. Sorted! 😃

        • Chrisasaurus says:

Sounds like too many accounts is exactly the problem…

    • memesweeper says:

      Apple Mail?

  • gary says:

Odd question, but does anybody know if it is possible to establish the expiry date of the 2-4-1 voucher once a booking has been made, without phoning BA?

I have one 2-4-1 left between me and my wife and it expires in September this year. It has already been rolled over from earlier cancelled flights- although i honestly can’t say for sure that it was ever extended by BA? i guess it was but i dont keep records so i really don’t know.

Anyway i want to use a 2-4-1 for a long haul trip next February and will be looking to book soon and now need to release one of the ones i have in place on an existing booking. I have at least 2 maybe more but i dont know the expiry dates. These are for flights that are likely to cancel or where i am unlikely to be able to travel hence i need to get my records straight so i can take action.

    thanks

    • Keely says:

Look at your BAEC account , click on vouchers, then more voucher information, and it will show your used vouchers. It will show these details there. Need to go this on the full site from memory, so not on a mobile.

    • Genghis says:

      Manage my account -> eVouchers

  • gary says:

Thanks Keely, that was easier than i thought it would be! I appreciate your help!

    • Keely says:

You’re welcome . Nice to be able help someone else for a change 🙂

  • Clive says:

So on the subject of Health Passports maybe we will be getting something sooner rather than later

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9240653/amp/Vaccinated-Brits-given-scannable-QR-codes-allow-travel-abroad.html?__twitter_impression=true

    • TGLoyalty says:

Ah so the absolutely no COVID passport line on Sunday morning was a lie

      Got to love his government.

      • James says:

The majority of what they say is a lie, we’ve had long enough to work that out by now.

      • TGLoyalty says:

I wonder if which jab you get will create even more divide

Pfizer to get in the nice bars?

AZ only accepted in the local social club?

      • Rob says:

Irrespective, GPs have always issued vaccination certificates on request.

    • Paul says:

The NHS app provides details of all your immunisations. Additional apps should not be necessary other than to provided some Tory crony with another tax payer funded fortune

      • TGLoyalty says:

I and others commented on Sunday that it doesn’t for all

        • tom1 says:

I contacted my local GP today to ask why I couldn’t see my health records, when my parents (same surgery) could.
Apparently all I had to do was to apply for online services on the GP website, and that would make the records accessible to the NHS app.
I’ve applied, so waiting to see.
However, looking at my parents’ app, I can’t see that being accepted in many countries – not exactly clear what each entry is for.

          • TGLoyalty says:

I can see my GP history it just includes medication and no inoculations.

          • QFFlyer says:

I’ve just set this up – I live overseas but am still registered, looks like I can see everything except my TB vaccination I had when I was at school. Even the yellow fever vax, which was at a different clinic, shows up and then everything else back to when I was born. I’m impressed and very surprised at how well it works!

  • Juni says:

Can someone confirm if you can book the double elite night promo with bonvoy points or must be paid?

    • Rob says:

It has to be booked via the ‘customise’ option on marriott.com which lets you book reward and cash nights IN ONE BOOKING. It does not work if you book some reward nights on one night and wrap one or more cash nights at the front or back.

  • Chris H says:

    Hi,
can anyone let me know if there has been a previous article on how to dispose of the metal Platinum cards once you have closed an account. They don’t break, can’t be cut, and don’t burn well.
If there hasn’t, how do you dispose of them?
