The HfP chat thread – Sunday 7th February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Got a result with an easyJet cancellation this weekend. Wanted Crete half term flights which were £600pp for family of four, so booked Athens return for dates in March instead for £50pp return. They got cancelled and was able to switch to half term for free. Nice £2200 saving that paid off! They allow you to change to any date and departure/arrival airport as long as it stays in same country.

      Nice!

    • Steve says:

Amazing, that is a brilliant result!

@ Matthew, excellent result. Fingers crossed you can go.

      • Matthew says:

Yes – It is Oct 2021 so hopefully will be OK! I know Rob said the weather wasn’t great last year in Crete but I’ll just be grateful for a break…it’ll be our third time at Domes but we love it there.

    • Matthew says:

Thanks! Thought worse case scenario I’d just transfer the flights 14 days before the planned flight and pay the fare difference. When I saw they were selling flights to Athens for whole of March it seemed like a good gamble.

      Nice grift

Melia bookings question if anyone can help. When booking a points and pounds night at a Melia hotel do you still get Melia points back for the pounds part paid?

    • Uddin says:

Yes you do but if you can’t travel getting a refund (even for a refundable rate) is a nightmare. Check some posts here from December and January.

Is the Curve limit on £600 fee-free ATM withdrawal in a foreign currency actually enforced? From £600 its supposed to be 2% in a rolling 30 day period.

Is it the same as the credit card £200 limit?

    • fivebobbill says:

Unlike the “UK £200 Limit!, the foreign £600 one is indeed enforced – at least it was for me. I’m Curve Metal, and had a few trips across several countries last year (yes I know), and when my £600 limit was breached in Turkey I was hit with a penalty. I queried it with CS but was knocked back and referred to the terms.

I have a feeling this may have already been discussed but i can’t find the thread so apologies in advance. I have a 2 for 1 voucher that expires in October and I want to make a booking in November. I am pretty sure that it has only been extended once when some have been extended twice. Nevertheless, I have also half heard of some loop holes to extend them. Can anyone clarify this situation? The BA sales guy was very helpful and told me to look on the forum on here and a friend mentioned something about booking a cheap redemption (LHR-MAN for example) and then cancelling for a future travel voucher. Any help would be gratefully received.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Listen to your friend. Book a flight for you have your intended +1 any route with low avios and £ cost. Then request an FTV some time after it will wrap your voucher, avios and £ into a voucher for future use
      up until April 2023.

Question on using 2 x 241 for 4 people, i.e. 4-4-2, does anyone know if they all have to be on the same PNR? I’ve got a current 241 booked in the sale, for me+1, and if I can get it moved I am hoping to book an additional 2 people for the same flight using another 241 I have.
This would obviously be dependant on availability, but is it possible or does the 4-4-2 option have to be done on all on one booking (so I’d have to cancel my existing to redo and hence lose the sale saving).
