The HfP chat thread – Saturday 6th February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

M&M Diners – has anyone successfully had their credit limit increased or even has attempted to do so?

    • TGLoyalty says:

If it’s closing in two months is there much point?

You can pay down as often as you like via BACS

      • Ming the Merciless says:

Or run a credit on the card…

        • Joseph Heenan says:

They very explicitly say not to run a credit as their FCA license doesn’t allow it. Not sure what happens in practice if you do.

          • Simon says:

            Many thanks all,

I hadn’t spotted the news, but have being employing both maneouvres above. Have circa 250k points and had hoped to get to 302k for an Oz F return (wife is Aussie), but this M&M news is disappointing to say the least.

Many thanks for the replies, though.

  • A says:

Quick question: Can Waitrose/John Lewis gift cards purchased in store in waitrose be used for an online John Lewis purchase?

    • mark2 says:

Yes, up to five IIRC or in store at JL.

      • EwanG says:

There wasn’t a limit for using them in store back in 2019 when I used 14 for a couple of big furniture purchases!

        • A says:

Thanks. I can’t use them in store – I’m in the US for the forseeable and fancy getting on a plan as much as a root canal, so to avail myself of the £175 platinum spend credit, I’m having to request a new card to UK address, get someone trusted to physically buy the cards in Waitrose, which I’ll then use for the online purchase at John Lewis…and I’ll get the item sent over here with my shiny new card stuck in the package.
A convoluted pain in the ass to use the credit, but JL has something I like that selfridges/harvey nichols don’t stock, so needs must.

    • Harry T says:

Yes, I used my Platinum £175 to buy a gift card at Waitrose which I used to pay for part of a new TV on the John Lewis website.

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

Question is, where to go on Holiday in the summer? Hmmm. A young couple, no kids but a massive sense of adventure. *preferably near-ish to a train station*

Currently debating between Dorset (probably Weymouth, so is near Monkey World and has a beach) or Devon / Cornwall (not sure where). Any recomendations? I know Rob went near to Falmouth and it looked nice

    • Sandra says:

You could start in Dorset and walk some of the coastal path towards Devon or however far you want to go/time allows and if you enjoy walking. It starts/finishes at Poole on the south coast, Minehead on the north coast. If you look up the map you’ll find places with stations along the way.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

My partner is in an electric wheelchair, I don’t think the whole route will be practical but certainly keep it on the list of things to do

Might go with one of my mates, we love a good hike

    • Aston100 says:

The Tank Museum (Bovington) is worth a visit if you are into military stuff at all.
The last working Tiger Tank resides there. This was used in that awful ‘Fury’ movie with Brad Pitt.

      • kitten says:

Isnt the Beaulieu Motor Museum somewhere near there?

      • The cyclist says:

If you have a massive sense of adventure, a tank museum is probably not the answer in all fairness.

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

Unless they’re going to let me drive it, I’d only consider it when bored

          • Aston100 says:

You were able to get a ride in that tank a few years ago when I last went.

We literally came to a fork in the road. It was a choice between Monkey World and the Tank Museum. We opted to turn right. I wonder if life would have turned out differently had we turned left and gone to Monkey World.

Have an appleyard flowers 15% rebate offer on my Plat amex; which lasts until mothers day; for those that plan ahead

  • PaulC says:

Spent over £10k on BA free AMEX, upgraded to BAPP expecting companion voucher to be triggered straight away. AMEX account says it have been triggers and can start again for a new one from 8 March when membership is renewed but nothing in BA account yet. Upgraded on Tuesday, should I wait longer?

    • KBuffett says:

I think you need to be on BAPP before you hit £10k

    • Hotelier says:

Give it a few more days. Once it shows check the expiry date is for two years and not one. If only one you’ll need to contact BA to change it.

  • Aston100 says:

Anyone have an opinion on Voco Cardiff vs Indigo Cardiff please?
On points, for a few nights in the summer.
    The Voco seemingly better value.
I have no knowledge of Cardiff.

    • Peter K says:

My sister stayed at Voco Cardiff and loved it. It’s a bit out of the centre of town however.
The Indigo had great reviews last time I looked, is slap bang in the middle of town but may be noisy.

The Hilton is also in the centre (just on the edge) is getting a bit tired, but the views of the castle from the executive lounge is great. I’ve been upgraded every time I’ve been there is Hilton Gold/Diamond.

Parking is rubbish in Cardiff. JustPark has some places just over the bridge but still 15 mins walk from the Hilton/Indigo.

      • Jane says:

Good to know about the Hilton Cardiff – I was thinking of that for a few days in the summer, mainly for the pool, I can cope with a bit tired. Not sure there is much upgrading they can do for a family of 4 though – I wanted to book a junior suite but they claim it only sleeps 3 even though the bed settee would be fine for our two & I can’t find any exec rooms that sleep 4.

      • Aston100 says:

Thanks Peter. I don’t have status with Hilton so am unlikely to stay there.
It has to be an IHG property.
The reviews of the Voco and of the Indigo seem to be very positive.
As you say, the Indigo seems to be in town, but the Voco seems to be in the bay area which (to me) looks a much nicer setting. The rooms seem larger too.

    • kitten says:

Rob did a review here of Voco when it opened

    • Harrier25 says:

We’ve stayed at the Holiday Inn in Cardiff and it was surprisingly pleasant.

    • Andrew says:

Indigo is nice and city centre, has free mini bar with Prosecco too. But Voco is 5 star and with balconies looking over the bay and a very nice spa it’s a beautiful hotel and much more of a full service hotel whereas Indigo is a small city centre hotel.

  • Alex D says:

Seen an article today that NatWest will be moving all of their Debit cards from Visa to MasterCard – curious as to what the benefit of this is? Simply a case of cheaper for them?

    • southlondonphil says:

Santander also moving their Debit Cards from VISA to MC, according to an email notification received a few days ago. Presumably MC are making an aggressive move to capture more of the Debit Card market and are offering banks a good deal.

Santander says I’ll be able to enable/block contactless, online, overseas, and/or gambling payments with the card using their App, so that might be part of the ‘sell’ to the card issuers?

  • Wally1976 says:

Does anyone know if the Recycling Factory have stopped doing inkjet cartridge recycling for Tesco Clubcard points? Just came to send some off and found this https://www.therecyclingfactory.com/tesco/

    • Rob says:

I spotted that last week. Not sure if it has gone for good although we haven’t written about it for a couple of years.
