The HfP chat thread – Friday 5th February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

On an optimistic note – I hope if we can get the vaccine rollout done and we can travel for the summer – the government tackle the cost of the PCR testing. £125+ for a test is absurd. I paid £50 last summer on arrival in KEF – does a country with higher income and living standards like Iceland lose money on the test in that scenario?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Expresstest charged £80 for those with a Heathrow flight last time I checked and £100 at BHX airport not sure if there’s a discount if you have a flight from BHX

Collinson charge £99 at East Midlands

      • Colin MacKinnon says:

And some Ryanair flights are £9.99 – so if you need a test, buy a throw away ticket.

Not that Express Test in Edinburgh ever checked for your flight – you just type the date and flight number in. (I wasn’t buying the ticket until I got a negative test!)

      • kitten says:

        And still a ®00dy ripoff
        Other countries £50 and less.

  • Anuj says:

How much compensation should I ask Amex for messing my credit balance refund for? Either in pounds or points

    Card A £-444
    Card B £368

I asked for card A to transferred to B
    What they actually did
    Card A £-888
Card B £-812 (instead of taking off 444 they added it to the bill!)

So I asked them to fix it which they’ve messed up again
    Card A £444
    Card B £368

    It should be
    Card A £0
    Card B £-76
Trying to even explain this all over the phone will be a nightmare

Hi all. BA has cancelled our flights to the US in first cabin (booked using 50pc off avios and companion voucher), but rebooked us on the next flight which is just over 3 hours later. What would our options be? Secretly hoping we can rebook to another date, but given the new flight I’m not sure they have to? Thanks

    • Harry T says:

If they cancelled your flight, you don’t have to accept the option they have rebooked you on to.

      • ComeFlyWithMe says:

They are stating that the date change can only be up to 3 days prior or up to 14 days after – does that sound legit, or possible to push for an even later flight (eg 2-3 months)?

    • mr_jetlag says:

you can rebook to any date within 1 year of original ticket issue. Just did it myself for a cancelled LHR-HND flight.

    • kitten says:

It’s the BA BuS again….as in BA bul$h1t. The other posters are correct.

    Questions for a Friday evening.

    1) Is it possible to get apply for Amex Plat Business, get the 40,0000 MR then cancel after spending the 6K and apply for the Gold Business in the same year and get the 20000MR?

    2) Is there any Diners club Card available in the UK now that Miles and More have binned theirs.

    3) I currently have in excess of 350k Marriott Points, what’s the best redemption in HFPers view in the UK?

    4) I’m thinking of Booking a cabin on the QM2 for the autumn, has any one tried it and what is the preferred cabin type?

    • TGLoyalty says:

      1) yes it’s 6 month gaps.

      2) no

      3) where you want to stay. university arms or The Langley both good choices.

    • Rob says:

      1. Yes, if you leave a 6 month gap
      2. Good question ….
      3. Langley, Turnberry, University Arms Cambridge (outside London)
      4. No idea!

      • Harry T says:

I agree with Rob’s list of UK Marriott hotels – I’ve stayed in all of them at least once and would highly recommend:

    • Crafty says:

I’ve been on the QM2 for work. Certainly wouldn’t pay money for the experience.

  • KBuffett says:

Does the BA iOS app show your 241 vouchers? If so, where?

    • Jill ( Kinkell) says:

Don’t think so. Well, I’ve never found it. Usually have to check the website

  • Number9 says:

BA have stopped flying to Buenos Aries I think my choices are fly into Brazil on BA with 241 voucher etc or go via Madrid direct on Iberia
Now my question is what is Iberia business class like or is it not worth spending a good chunk of points on or should I go with plan A via Brazil on BA metal .. I know I can’t use 241 voucher on Iberia. Thanks for any advice.

    • PaulW says:

Had a perfectly good flight to chile in their older a340, with the low taxes and avios needed I was very happy. Main problem is their customer service lines if you need to change anything. Not good after a flight was cancelled though ironically eventually rebooked in avios &rp earning class so every cloud

      • Number9 says:

Thanks Paul It’s a pia trying to decide what’s best to do. What are their business class seats like ?

    • Tracey says:

Iberia business class is better than BA. Everyone gets aisle access for starters. Also London to Madrid on BA will be proper bus class flat bed seats.

      • Optimus Prime says:

        Only on BA460/BA461 and IB3166/3167

      • Number9 says:

Thanks that’s what I was wanting to know. I think it’s cheaper tax/surcharge wise to book on Iberia website ? Now I’ve had account for years it’s not got a single point in account what is quickest way for me to earn the single point required before I transfer from avois to redeem flights or have I misunderstood the process?

        • Chef says:

We flew Madrid – Havana on Iberia in business on a 350 and it was very pleasant indeed.

      Montevideo is closer
