The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 3rd February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just tried to book a weekend at IHG Geneva for the summer (hopeful!) using an ambassador complimentary weekend night rate. It tried to charge my credit card, got as far as receiving a text message from my bank to confirm transaction. Stoped proceedings. Do these rates require pre-payment? T&C still says that it can be cancelled, but not keen on paying so far ahead. Anyone knows anything re: this?

    • Anna says:

I’ve never had an Ambassador bogof night charged in advance – in fact I’ve never had any IHG booking charged until the day before a stay!

      • K says:

Neither have I. I got the verification SMS from my bank asking me to confirm the transaction showing the actual SWiss Franc amount for both nights. Quite strange. Pre-authoration? But that too, I never had that happening before

        • K says:

Rang IHG and booked it over the phone. The CS rep kept avoiding answering my question why is the website trying to charge me.

      • meta says:

I have never been charged on Ambassador rate in advance, always on checking out!

  • Grimz says:

I have been waiting over 2 months for BA to charge me for flights on my BAPP card. I know it seems daft pushing them to take money from me but I need it for the bonus!!
    Anyone else waited this long?

    • Jane says:

I booked reward flights one way on the day they were released and added the returns later, out was charged immediately as usual, still waiting for the returns to be charged. this was last August !

      • Paul says:

Definitely chase this up before you leave. We had similar, but hadn’t noticed until arrival at the airport to come home, when despite being in MMB, and having seats reserved, and being on manifest, we couldn’t be checked in or allowed to fly. Only way to resolve was to call BA exec club (ourselves, not the check in staff), wait to be transferred to ticketing, and pay then. Not the best way to end a holiday, hour and a half on the phone praying battery would last, connection wouldn’t drop, wouldn’t get cut off, and finally sorted as they were closing check in before our eyes.

        • Jane says:

The flight was Florida so I’m not entirely confident we’ll be going but I’ll definitely be calling 6 or so weeks out to sort it if it’s not happened.

    • Darren says:

      Has it been ticketed?

      • Tonyb says:

I was charged last week for returns on flights booked in September, I thought they would have been keen to get the money in!

    • Tariq says:

Same. Now waiting for a cancellation refund too…! Would have been easier if they had just set one off against the other.

  • Andrew says:

I made a change to a booking in October which required a small increase in taxes/charges – yet to be billed to my BAPP too.

I’d rather listen to William Hague reading the Yellow Pages.

i’m trying to get Avios into my Iberia account, and although I had an avis booking which i credited to my IB Plus account…. no avios have been forthcoming (since October)… i have tried both Avis and Iberia to get the points across but so far nothing!

what alternative (cheap) ways are there to get avios into my IB Plus account, so that I can transfer from BAEC into IB Plus? I looked at buying Avios on Iberia.com but its $80.00 for 2000 avios, which is just horrible!

    it is getting really frustrating

  • Tony says:

Spoke to You First agent today about rebooking my flights which BA had cancelled. The flights were paid for using the BA 50% Avios promo last year. He could not book me on flights beyond the 355 validity period, but suggested taking the FTV and paying the difference in Avios. He then mentioned that currently there is no fare difference to pay for flights until 30 June so it would be worth waiting a while to see if BA extends this deadline as they have been receiving a significant number of queries/complaints on this subject. Will see if anything transpires over the next month, otherwise I will just take the refund!

    • TGLoyalty says:

Well ofcourse they suggested taking an FTV as you’ll be on the hook for the full avios for any new flight.

    • kitten says:

reroute would preserve your rights and the 50% pricing. with few flights now for quite some time BA really needs to be willing to issue new tickets in the correct manner if someone is in a position needing to travel even up to 2 years after ticket issue but beyond initial 12 month validity of tkt from issue date this is not complicated

  • BuildBackBetter says:

Swiss – first class from london to Asia from £2k. Until Dec. (luxury flight club)

  • Max says:

I have no offers on my Amex rewards card for the past 2 months, anyone else had this problem?

    • Peter K says:

Try reading page 2 to of the comments today for the same issue but a different card.
