Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 1st February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Amex business card- just had an email saying they recognise how frustrating it can be to not be able to use Amex. So they’ve now set up a platform that will allow you to pay with Amex, even when it’s not accepted by the merchant. There will be a 1% fee (which they say should be tax deductible) but you will get your 1mile/£1. They specifically state paying PAYE, HMRC and said they have a specialist team to help you setup if you need it. Maybe they’ve seen how willing people have been to pay Billhop or Curve fees?? Fees might make sense under some circumstances.

Can you pay beardy with bendy backed with the creationists? Do I need metal and is there a fee from the creationists? TIA

Using Clubcard points for hotels? I’ve regularly found good value with Hotels.com over the years as well as converting to Avios. I’d like to make a UK hotel booking (refundable on HC with cash) but wondered to what degree is the Clubcard voucher payment refundable if we’re still in lockdown. Has anyone cancelled a Hotels.com booking made with Clubcard vouchers before?

    • Blenz101 says:

What you won’t be able to do is cancel and obtain a refund. Your CC voucher can not be returned or reinstated with by Tesco or Hotels.com. The value of the voucher will be lost if you cancel and you will only be able to get your taxes and any supplemental you paid back. The same will be true if the hotel cancels on you.

What you can do is book a flexible rate which allows you to move the date of the booking, obviously this will be slightly higher than a non-refundable rate. You could then at least move the booking, never had to do this so not sure how they they would treat things if rates had changed.

Whatever you do, don’t attempt to cancel a booking made with Tesco vouchers.

      • Jonathan says:

With the way things currently are within the travel industry, you’d be very silly to book a non refundable hotel room(s)

        • Blenz101 says:

Biggest issue with the way the Tesco vouchers are issued/handled is that even if the hotel cancels on you because it closes then you still can’t get a refund.

            Shurely not legal?
I’d be having some strong words with Tesco/hotels.com

Is there a way to use Bendy Black (or an upgraded Metal) backed by Creationists to support Revolutionaries? If so, can the Revolutionaries then provide arms to Beardy ones?

    • Doug M says:

Is there a reason you wouldn’t try with small amounts to find out? Any answer won’t necessarily be correct, and what works today may not work in a week.

Only when the birds fly North in the Asian Spring.

      • Harrier25 says:

You can tell its gonna be one of those nights when all the bearded bendy revolutionaries come out to play! 🙄
