The HfP chat thread – Monday 1st February

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Have u referred anyone in the past? If yes, how many? Asking as someone mentioned the retention bonuses are given to those who refer and bring in new customers.

    • Mark says:

I referred someone in my household, but I would say shes probably not what AMEX would classify as a “new customer”…

  • Andrew says:

BBC reporting on fake Covid test certificates regularly being sold online. There really needs to be a better system for certifying negative results and potentially vaccinations that is much harder to fake.

    • Anna says:

This has been happening for months. No-one ever gives consideration to the ease with which these things can be exploited by the dishonest. Similarly it’s widely known that people are sending their family and friends to be tested if they want a specific outcome (e.g. you send you’re recently tested positive mate if you want 2 weeks off work and an isolation payment). OH and I got tested just after Xmas and no-one checked that we were the actual people who had registered online for the test.

+1. Given that PCR tests by post are allowed, they could contain anyone’s swab.

      • Yuff says:

Can’t say that’s my experience with the airport testing last month, passport details had to be inputted to book the test, all checked at the airport and all produced on the certificate.
The checking in and payment took way longer than the test itself.

Guys, Curve+Barclays HH with TransferWise possible?

  • Russ says:

Actually think we may see an easier and more benelovent travel landscape going forward. Summer’s still a long way off in the real world, countries want tourists and are willing to throw money at getting them back. Governments don’t want to lose elections over this; especially when it finally starts to look like we’re breaking even.

NS&I- how much time does a withdrawal from premium bonds take compared to its direct saver?

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Exactly the same amount of time to become wtihdrawable.

Premium Bonds take 3 working days after you’ve requested a withdraw to land in your account. Don’t know about the Direct Saver. The Incomes Bonds are next day though (around 2pm)

      • stevenhp1987 says:

        *withdrawable, not wtihdrawable!

      • Bigmaggot says:

It was previously 3 days, seems back down to 1 day on withdrawal last night. It says ETA when you attempt to withdraw

  • Venturelog says:

Transferring Tesco Clubcard to Virgin points – has anyone been able to transfer to a different name at a Virgin account?
I know I had issues with Tesco to Avios.

  • Barry says:

Has anyone recently had a rejection decision overturned for the Virgin Atlantic Rewards cards?
I’ve applied with a decent income and spotless credit score, yet got a big fat no.

    • Rob says:

Historically they overturned if you wrote in, highlighting your strong financial position and your love of the airline.

    • Travel Strong says:

Twice rejected, twice appealed, twice overturned.

(When card first came out, and 1yr ago)

    • Harry T says:

I’m in a similar situation to the OP. In the past, I did write in to appeal and was approved. However, they do like to hand out low credit limits! This wasn’t an issue in the heady days before they limited your monthly points to your credit limit.

  • BJ says:

With so many heading north I think we will go south. Is Cornwall still likely to be manic in mid September after the schools have (hopefully) returned or should it be quite pleasant by then?

    • Jill ( Kinkell) says:

I’d go south! We’re hoping to head Bristol/Bath way in the autumn, avoiding those HfPs following travel route recommendations for Scotland / Highlands mentioned above . I could throw in my 2d. worth, …Skye, Plockton, obligatory fish and chips in Ullapool, Lochinver………never been particularly enamoured of Loch Lomond and Oban, but as a Highlander..a wee bit of bias?!

    • Christopher says:

Cornwall in mid-Sep is newly-weds and nearly-deads season.
