Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Saturday 30th January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

What system did they use to put take countries off the travel corridors. 20 cases per 100k for how long? Was it an average of a number of days?

Just thinking if they will follow suit for the Red countries.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Hancock and priti will throw darts at a list of countries and shapps will protest against some but accept others until finally the whole global is covered.

    • Rob says:

Doubt it was 20 when the UK was running at 300+.

Great to see Lady London back (after yesterday’s discussions). Seldom agreed with your/her more controversial comments, but one of the great contributors nonetheless and a great joy to have back (under the original name).

    • ChrisBCN says:

She’s always been kinda here.. I don’t think she has been controversial at all, but a great proponent of standing up for you rights – and I applaud that and thank her for everything she does here.

Received an email from BA saying that my flight to JNB has been cancelled. I had booked the flight in the 50% Avios sale in F cabin.

Called up BA customer care, and got through to an agent in less than a minute which was very impressive! I wanted to explore the flight availability for December 2020. But the agent refused to book a new ticket departing LHR to JNB in December citing the 1 year ticket validity rule, which was what I was expecting.

But when I started playing around with the MMB options for my cancelled ticket online, I noticed that BA is showing flight options in December. I haven’t decided yet on the new dates I would like to fly, but can I book the ticket online on BA portal for a date which is after a year of the booking date?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Charlieface says:

No idea, but the 1 year thing is BS. It refers to voluntary changes by passenger, not involuntary due to cancellations. The agent should just rebook and endorse it as INVOL.

      • Polly says:

Flat out refused to do that for our KUL flights. Insisted on the 1nyear rule..read out sale rules to me..

        • Charlieface says:

The sales rules are for VOLUNTARY changes, the agent doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

    • Mco says:

It will error out when you go to confirm flights.

    • 747_Brat says:

Thanks guys. Based on the feedback here, I will give a try and report back.

    Hi,

Just out of curiosity, has anyone managed to use the Amex Platinum hotel status enrolment page? Opened a supplmentary Platinum card for a family member, but every time after pressing the submit button, the page would hang and then an error message stating that the server is not responding.

Have tried on my account as well, and tried Firefox, Chrome, all the same result. Contacted Amex both in chat and call centre, but they weren’t helpful either.

    Thanks

Bendy Metal fronting + Beardy/IHG to pay Halifax mortgage overpayment – does that work?

    • KP says:

Can we make an overpayment using a card to Halifax mortgage acct?.I can only see the account details option of transfer rather than taking from debit card.

  • Stuart says:

I can’t remember who was asking about how to find out when a companion/upgrade voucher has been earned, but if you download the Virgin Red app, that tracks all points and vouchers earned by your credit card, as well as listing any flight bookings you have.

    • Stuart says:

      That was referring to Virgin

      • Alex D says:

If I download the app I can’t login – says they are gaining new members all the time and to come back soon…seems odd?

        • Stuart says:

I received that message until about a week ago so it is worth retrying a couple of times

  • pinperl says:

    Hi.
anyone know if amex platinum offering retention offers at the moment?

  • Darren says:

May be a little late in the day to post this but after all of the talk of best UK hotels today, is it worth an article to highlight the best of each brand, split into categories? Best Budget Hilton, Best City IHG outside of London (or in) etc.

Or a World Cup of…..? Ala Richard Osman.

    • Rob says:

The issue is that we don’t really stay in them, to be honest, so it is difficult for us to do it properly without making it too reliant on readers.
