The HfP chat thread – Thursday 28th January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Looks like Easyjet cancelling next batch of flights, our Naples trip in March (postponedfrom last March) just got binned! Oh well, Cosi è la vita!

    • William R B says:

More than cancelling flights, easyjet are cancelling whole routes (at least up to the end of the current booking period). LTN – BSL is one example. I am currently trying online to get refunded for several flights. The tracker does not seem to work as it just finishes with instructions to phone. Does anyone have current experience with easyjet online refunds – do they actually work? They were boasting that the average time to receive the refund was just 13 days, but my application was well past that time.

      • Jody says:

I’ve only phoned to get a refund, but I received it within 3 days which I thought was impressive.

      • kitten says:

They have been pulling out of airports for whole season and possibly permanently. And not just minor routes

      • Colin says:

I do a lot of them through my job William – just had a look at timescales and the refunds requested and received since early December (about 20 of them in total) have taken between 10-20 days. 22 days was the longest but still much, much quicker than back in Mar/Apr 2020.

        • William R B says:

Thanks for this info Colin. I did phone and was ‘promised’ refunds within 7-10 working days, with a maximum of 30!

    • Travel Strong says:

I had no luck online, but almost instant refunds on the phone with no wait time either.

      • JohnT says:

I had to wait a month previously but will see now! They do post refunds with a posting date of original booking so can be hard to find on statements!

  • Simon says:

Quick question on the Virgin 241 voucher. Can you earn more than one in a card year?
    Thanks
    Simon

  • Simon says:

Metro bank switch • does anyone know if this is still running for a £50.00 incentive? If it is, I’d welcome a referral code from any HPFer. (Or, should it no longer be but there are other switching offers, then I am also available for a referral in that respect. 🙂 ) TIA.

  • Nick_C says:

The Metrobank promotion closed on 18 December.

The Virgin offer of 18 bottles of wine is quite attractive. You also get 2% interest on £1k in the current account, and 0.5% on an instant access savings account. No referral needed.

  • xcalx says:

“Do both accounts need to be in my name?

    No.

You can link accounts in different surnames together.

I tried linking my Avios account to a Nectar account in a different name to mine and it worked fine.

This would represent a way of transferring Avios for free between two people by linking and unlinking different Nectar accounts – but be careful.

However, you cannot link and unlink an Avios or Nectar account more than four times in a calendar year. Once you have done this, you cannot link the Nectar card back to ANY Avios account, even one to which it has been previously linked. There is a risk that you end up with a Nectar account which cannot be linked to an Avios account again until 1st January 2022.”

Having a senior moment and it’s not sinking in. Here are a few questions.

If I open a nectar account can I transfer in from say 3 BA Avios accounts into that nectar account then add the 4th BA account and transfer the nectar balance into that or do I cancel each BA account after moving Avios over to Nectar.

Am I right in thinking it’s the last BA account linked that would keep the Avios.

I am wanting to tidy up a few family accounts (not household) into a decent balance avoiding multiple separate bookings.

    Thanks

    • John says:

You may be able to do that, but it could trigger some fraud flags. It’s allowed by the T&Cs but perhaps they did not consider that it could lead to people selling avios to each other

I would do it slowly and maybe use 2 nectar accounts with some transactions rather than moving 3 lots of avios into a brand new nectar

I just moved nectar from my account in a fake name to avios in a different name which is in my household account, so that works

      • xcalx says:

They have to be new Nectar accounts as none of my sons , DILs or inlaws have had one in the past so would mean moving Avois in then nectar out to partners account.

  • Crispr says:

Amex offers have started to appear on my platinum charge card and some others, has this been fixed?

I’ve read somewhere that getting the £175 credit offer added manually fixes the problem…

FWIW I have got 85k retention bonus + £275 in selfridges giftcards using the 100% back offers and I only opened the card in September 🙂

Likelihood of another offer for platinum cardholders in the next 2 months?

    • RedStar says:

How long does it take – after they authorise retention bonus MR points – for them to show up on account

    • Harry T says:

Did you get the 85k retention bonus as a single one time retention offer, or was it two separate retention bonuses?

      • Andrew says:

85K is a crazy retention bonus – that’s worth £680 now we have the Nectar route – over a £100 more than the annual fee!

  • The uncivil servant says:

Am I right in thinking that flying in Europe regarding genuine property transactions is still allowed? or are they now deemed non essential. I would be travelling light with docs and not a large suitcase with holiday paraphernalia.

    • kitten says:

For now however up to you to know if it’s so essential even if your travel could transmit the virus from here to somewhere else or expose you to any at your destination.

    • Anna says:

The regulations haven’t changed, it just sounds like they are tightening up on checking people’s reasons for travelling. If your flight is still going, and you meet the criteria at the other end, (AND at this end if it’s a quarantine destination!), you’d be allowed to fly if you had proof of your reason for travel.

    • Rob says:

      Still allowed.

  • John says:

Anyone had a bonus to retain Amex spg credit card?
    Thanks

    • memesweeper says:

I haven’t asked because I genuinely haven’t considered cancelling it — it’s my ‘keeper’ of an Amex! Probably missing a trick here…

    • The Urbanite says:

Got a £60 statement credit last time, no bonus point offer which is what I was after. Still, a good return for a quick call!

    • dezbez says:

I tried at the weekend but nothing forthcoming from Amex, so it’s now in the bin. (I wasn’t expecting anything tbf.)
