The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 27th January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

whats the latest on the Barclays premier tie up with Avios? I know it was supposed to be in early 2021but haven’t heard anything

  • Jay says:

Anyone with a Trading 212 referral link ?

  • J says:

Has anyone experience of Curve making incorrect multiple transactions/overcharging? I use Curve/PayPal for Uber and have noticed I’m being over-charged/charged multiple times – not just in pending. I’ve emailed Curve and Uber but don’t seem to be getting anywhere. Lesson learnt I suppose not to complicate things with PayPal and Curve.

    • The real John says:

Curve preauths often can post as full charges and occasionally they are not reversed properly.

What is the purpose of using paypal for uber?

      • J says:

No reason just convenience. Thanks, I’ll keep on at Curve to fix.

      • the_real_a says:

Don’t uber transactions “open a tab” on your card in a similar way to petrol pre-auths of £99? These are always problematic waiting for the final amount to apply to the underlying card.

      • Chrisasaurus says:

How in gods name is that not picked up? Surely they’re left with a balance?

    • Mr. AC says:

FWIW I’ve been tracking Curve charges and refunds for 2 years, including Go Back in Time (hundreds of transactions total) and I’ve only been actually double charged once. And they refunded it before I even complained (bug affected many people).
The issue is, however, that depending on the underlying cards refunds / temporary holds are displayed in very different ways. E.g. Revolut is pretty straightforward with push notifications and separate items in history, but something like Creation is not (no trace of the incoming transaction in history, but the “Available” balance suddenly increases). Additionally some cards receive refunds from Curve within 1-2 days, and some take a month (probably until the next statement is generated).
I hope Curve just goes back to “refund to Curve cash” system, was much simpler…

    • Alex says:

Yes, with Uber Eats, tips added have been charged twice. Makes me think whether I will be tipping again. Uber said they did not do it, Curve refunded as they said as a goodwill but only after several reminders.

  • Harry T says:

I bought a £175 gift card in Waitrose for JL and the rebate triggered a day or two after the charge hit my card.

  • Barry says:

    RE: Viking/Nectar offer.
Anyone know if this works on gift card purchases?
I’ve noticed Viking sell One4all giftcards that could be bought to reach the £30 min spend.

    • Travel Strong says:

Cushelle looks to be reasonably priced! Haven’t checked shipping fees though

    • Phil says:

I’ve just bought £40 worth of One4all giftcards from Viking to see if that will trigger the 2000 Nectar Points.

Anybody know how long it takes for Nectar Points to post from Viking?

      • BJ says:

See the t&c, they likely state 28 days after the closing date. If so, that is very likely when you will get them (regardless of you transaction date). Some nectar offers post quickly but very few IME.

  • Steven says:

Don’t know if Creation are also tightening their eligibility criteria for self-employed. Just tried the pre-elig. checker and advised not eligible. No issues at all with my income/credit score.

    • the_real_a says:

If its for IHG and certainly if you have held the card previously it was impossible to re-apply.

      • Steven says:

Yes, it’s the IHG one. Never held the card though. Will try again in a few months. Someone on here before mentioned about the address being in the correct format causing an issue so may well be that.

      • Genghis says:

I’ve had the White card twice, both whilst holding the Black card.

  • GaryE says:

Is anybody aware of 0% purchase card, with a reasonable period, that offers any rewards? I cannot apply for the Sainsburys Nectar card as I already hold their Mastercard, and need it in the next 2-3 weeks as have a couple of large expenses coming through at the beginning of March.
