The HfP chat thread – Monday 25th January

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

What is a BA 125 ticket?

    • Jonathan says:

A ticket sold by BA (regardless of who operates the flight).

All tickets sold by BA have a ticket number starting 125 vs AA who are 001 or Virgin Atlantic 932 etc.

      • Charlieface says:

        Ticketed by BA not sold.

The selling agent could be anyone obviously. AA agents could sell you a 125 ticket if they wanted to and had the systems in place.

Morrison’s has extended their 10% discount for NHS workers and are now allowing it be used for online shopping. I reckon this is much better than Nectar points for those who are eligible.

    • Jonathan says:

They’ve been saying “now valid online” since at least September looking back at my e-mails! Agree it’s the best deal in town for stocking up on basic essentials.

      • Wally1976 says:

We’ve been using this along time although you do need to keep checking if you’ve received the discount or not and chase it if you haven’t.

      • Harry T says:

        @Jonathan
That’s interesting because their email to me today is the first time I recall seeing you could use it online! This is positive because it means my partner can order online through my account and not have to take me with her shopping to get the discount.

Question regarding HSBC WE, I upgraded from Premier to WE and the card name has changed in the app. Will my spends on old Premier, till I get the new card accumulate points according to WE or Premier? Thanks!

    • 747_Brat says:

Sorry not sure about the answer to your question, but please could you share your experience about the upgrade process from Premier to WE, and how did you apply for an upgrade – over the phone or in the branch?
      Thanks.

      • KS says:

I did it over the phone. They sent a letter which I had to sign and send it back. Other than the faff about sending and receiving letters over mail it was a simple process.

        • 747_Brat says:

Cheers thanks for confirming. You should thank your stars really! 🙂

          • Jamie says:

Well, you had the choice to be sent the form by post but you’re that desperate you couldn’t wait and went to the branch. Your choice.

    • The Urbanite says:

Your old card will earn at Premier WE rates once the upgrade is processed – this is what happened with me.

  • Aston100 says:

I’ve got a £15 referral offer from Revolut.
I wonder if this was targeted?

    • Aston100 says:

Also, it freaked me out a little, given they were being discussed a few minutes earlier, as if the spirit of Che is watching over me, smiling down from Marxist heaven.

    • Peter K says:

I got the same. These occur from give to time. Expect an article on revolut from HfP soon if they also got the offer.

  • BS says:

Any thoughts on when they hotel quarantine requirement will be brought in (rather than just announced)?

    • Anna says:

      They are saying 3 weeks,

      • Blenz101 says:

Waste of time in the way it has been announced. Direct flights have already been suspended to the countries proposed so effectively this means the only people likely to be impacted are UK residents returning via another indirect route (who will have already mixed with UK arrivals on the plane).

If you are coming in via AMS/CDG/DXB how are they going to detect and quarantine arriving passengers who have been in one of the affected countries.
It will be easy (and often cheaper) to buy the UK leg separately.

Presumably they will be looking for people to ‘self declare’ on the locator form then perhaps even show show a booking for a hotel for 10 nights? They aren’t going to be locking people in or tagging. It will all be completely circumvented by anybody determined.

The only people who may have considered paying are those with an expense account and business to conduct but I suspect anything ‘essential’ or ‘for compassionate reasons’ would be excluded from the requirement anyway.

So no deterrent, just lots of noise about ‘doing something’ until the numbers are down as the vaccine takes effect and hope in three weeks that such plans can be dropped.

Headlines about the topic may put some people off future bookings if they buy the governments line at face value.

    Hi all,

I saved down the PayPal offer on my BA Amex. I sent £70 to my sister (a gift ofc) and the offer doesn’t seem to have triggered yet. It’s been 6 days and no sign of the credit on my card. Has anyone else been in a similar situation or have PayPal/Amex cottoned on one wonders

  • rob(staaaar) says:

re: Tesco Clubcard – Anyone know if you can set to auto-convert for Virgin points (for the 2K bonus) then, then go back in x days later to change back after bonus points have posted? Asking as I don’t want convert my whole Clubcard stash in one foul swoop. Ta.

    • Blenz101 says:

Yes, you can convert any points which are not already vouchers during the quarterly conversion for one period and then once those points and bonus have been transferred and the new collection period begins turn off auto convert.

You have likely missed this period as the conversion process is already underway.

Also, it will convert ALL points. The only thing not converted are the points you have moved already into £ denominated vouchers. You can do this via faster vouchers.

      • Charlieface says:

28th is the deadline for this period.
I’m still hoping for bonus before then…
