Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Saturday 23rd January

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does anyone know how to check how many points were used for a VS redemption booking (where a cc voucher/offer was used)?

I booked a few flights during the recent half price offer – some with vouchers, some without, some peak some off-peak and now can’t remember how many points I used, and didn’t write it down (very unlike me).

Some older flight confirmations, booked online, seem to have the points on, but those done manually have no trace of the points, only the cash element. I can’t see by logging in either.

    Thanks!

BA refusing my request for rerouting for Seychelles. They state that their liability is limited to a refund of the ticket cost or a voucher. That is completely against EC261. Will be sending a letter before action given this is the second refusal. Am I assuming I will need to go down the MCOL route here and rebook the tickets myself?

send the LBA f.a.o. BA’s legal department and they might see some sense.

This is about preserving BA’s cashflow as presumably they don’t even want to pay the much, much lower interline rates which is all they would pay if they obeyed the law and rerouted you.

Do you have to quote the UK name of where EU261 has been integrated into UK law in the letter to ensure it’s technically correct? otherwise quote nothing just ask for reroute.

Since BA is apparently wanting you to be out of pocket for a lot rather than them paying their little liability please make sure you claim for absolutely everything including your time, any extra costs + 8% interest.

      • Alex says:

Agreed, will mark it as FAO Legal. They are also using the ticket validity argument (which again given they are suspending the route doesn’t seem fair to me). Also tried to claim their CoC is supreme to EC261.

My reading of the law now was that under the European Union (Withdrawal) Act all EU directives were effectively put on the statute book. Statutory Instrument 2019 No. 278 makes a few amends to EC261 and so I’ve quoted EC261 & also that. SI refers to The Air Passenger Rights and Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing (Amendment) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019. I also quoted their website where they make right to rerouting clear.

I am trying to be reasonable, but then again I can see that there is a tactic to just stonewall as much as possible and hope people give up.

Maybe like you say a LBA will make them see sense but I can’t imagine it will.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

EU 261 still applies as it was introduced before brexit so quoting that should be fine

    • The real John says:

You can quote it as something like “Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004, as incorporated into UK domestic law under Section 3 of the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018 and amended by Section 8 of The Air Passenger Rights and Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing (Amendment) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019”.

Booked & stayed several Marriott nights via BA Avios portal but the Avios still shown as pending since September last year > 120 days since check out. Any idea how to chase it?

Trust Pilot reviews on Complete Savings were a mix bag, with some even mentioned that they were not able to cancel the membership online and ended up getting charged for many months.

I was a bit hesitant to signup as a result. Are they good in your experience?

Thank you for confirming that Rakuten UK is useless! 🙂

I hear a lot about Rakuten on US based Miles & Points blogs, and always thought if I am missing out on something. But I guess I haven’t lost out on much then, eh?

  • Rob says:

No longer, unless you have one of the few cards which lets you load a Revolut debit card without a fee.

  • PaulC says:

Managed to stay up for the USA midnight phone call and bagged flights a day later than we originally wanted (Should of rang yesterday) but happy to have them now. Something new to me, I’ve used a FTV and they were happy to reserve the seats and told me to ring back when the return leg is available and only then will they take payment and remaining Avios points. Flight is in my booking list in my account so safe enough.
