Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Friday 22nd January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Gareth says:

Does anyone know of a nectar card that is zero % charge for non sterling use

  • BJ says:

So, @Rob, have you gritted your teeth already and swapped Waitrose for Sainsbury’s Local and Pret for Nero?

    • Andrew says:

He’s got his £175 from Amex to spend at Waitrose first.

      • Rob says:

Our Sainsbury’s Local hasn’t yet been changed to accept scanned Nectar cards, so I can’t even earn points there unless I bring my plastic card or queue at a manned till.

        • Mouse says:

You can key the barcode of your card into the self-service tills (as if you were manually entering a shopping item)

  • Oli says:

Are the Sainsbury’s bonus point offers also for online shopping?

    • Craig says:

      Yes.

      • Oli says:

Thanks. Offers usually expire on a Friday. Does the order or the delivery had to be made by Friday?

        • Craig says:

The delivery because the receipt is generated on the day. Sometimes you may have ordered something that gets substituted and the points don’t post. I’ve had success getting them to manually add the points in the past.

  • Chef says:

I requested a Virgin to Hilton transfer on Sunday, it was confirmed an hour later and the points are in my Hilton account tonight.
    They’ve upped their game.

  • Martin says:

Hi guys. Is the following sequence of Amex cards possible as a churning strategy? BA then Gold Business then Platinum.

    Thanks!

  • BP says:

Does anyone think that mandatory hotel quarantine in the UK is likely to be implemented anytime soon?

    • Harry T says:

No, they don’t have the logistical ability or competence to do it. They also don’t have the money. Australia manages this through strictly controlling passenger numbers to a minute figure and actually having some form of competent government and functioning track and trace.

    • ChrisBCN says:

      Not happening.
