The HfP chat thread – Thursday 21st January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I’d welcome a bit of advice on the virgin credit card. I have the free Reward card already but want to upgrade to the Reward+ card. I believe you can no longer apply for and hold both cards at the same time. Also, how can I obtain the sign-up bonus for the fee card? Will I need to cancel the free card, wait 6 months and then apply for the fee card (assuming it will still be available in 6 months)?

    • John says:

yes I think so. I tried to apply for the Reward+ whilst holding Reward and they rejected me as already held the Reward. It’s all a bit silly

  • Crispr says:

Amex platinum upgrade offer for 20k points, the terms have been changed from:

    1. The 20,000 Membership Rewards bonus points will be awarded onto your Account once you have been approved and you have spent and charged £4,000 within the first three months of Cardmembership. This introductory offer is subject to change and can be withdrawn at any time. Please note that it can take up to 60 days for bonus points to be awarded to your Account

Couldn’t get them to honour the 20k points as I’ve had the bonus before. They updated the terms after I had upgraded..oh well

    • G says:

Bummer. This was a good loophole to the 24 month rule. It was good while it lasted. Doubt the platinum makes sense for me in future without it

    • Jtz says:

Thanks for posting this, was considering it for the other half, will leave it now

  • Venturelog says:

Has anyone managed to get a refund from EasyJet after a cancelled flight? If so, how long did it take to appear on your card or account? Thank you

    • idrive says:

no, not yet, still waiting since 25/12, they cancelled the flight

    • Anna says:

Yes, back in September. The refund was quick, within a couple of weeks anyway. Much easier to deal with than BA! (That goes for Ryanair also)

    • Jody says:

Yes, I popped something about it on the chat thread yesterday. Cancelled flight on 7th Jan, refund was back on my Amex card on 10th Jan.

    • Aston100 says:

Applied for a refund 8 months ago. Chased them numerous times. No acknowledgement. Amex s75 has been ongoing for almost 6 months with no progress. Might have to go to MCOL I guess?

      • Anna says:

That is odd – when I checked on the progress of mine there was a tracker showing what stage the refund was at and when I could expect to receive it (in the event I got it about 3 weeks earlier than estimated). Have you found this?

        • Venturelog says:

I thought I would see a tracker but it asks me to contact them on 0330 365 5000
I’ll contact them now but didn’t want to call just to be told to wait a certain amount of time. Hence my query to get an idea if I should just wait. I sent the request last week 12th

  • Aaron says:

Hi all – Paid HMRC in December for some SA dues using Bendy and Hilton Barclaycard. Got my statement recently and the points didn’t post for the HMRC part – anybody else seeing this too now / has there been a change? Materially reduces the value of Bendy if this is now the case.

  • The uncivil servant says:

    Priti Patel bingo again!!

    • Doommonger says:

Nothing new from our esteemed Home Secretary. “pay tribute to the police” blah, “wonderful police” blah blah, “enforce” blah, “quite frankly” at least five times, blah blah, “emphasising” several times, blah, blah, quack blah quack quack quack.

      • John says:

Priti talks like a lot of BAME. Many of my colleagues and friends have such patter.

This is Racism pure and simple.

        • The uncivil servant says:

Load of nonsense John, she is not very good, plain and simple.

        • Chris K says:

It does all seem a bit “brown woman bad” doesn’t it? I doubt a white bloke would be similarly criticised for how they look or talk in the way I’ve seen on here this week and last.

I speak as a white-ish bloke who doesn’t normally jump to assuming the worst. But I’ve found it quite shocking actually.

  • Platinum Remoaner says:

British airways cancelled my flight to Lahore, but rebooked me on a flight a day before my first connection flight into London. Called up 3 times and each call centre staff hung up on me after i told them the issue. Got to India on the 4th call and lady rebooked me but my MMB hasn’t updated and neither. I presume that it takes time for the system to update the rebooking?

    • ChrisC says:

You might need to properly refresh MMB. Sometimes logging out and in again works but sometimes it takes time. Sometimes you need to reattach the booking back into MMB

For future reference if you have a flight change like this again it’s always best to wait a couple of days before doing anything. When a flight is cancelled they focus on rebookign onto other flights – especially if it’s long haul. It then takes a couple of days for the system to catch up with any connections. It’s just the way it is.

Last year I had DUB-LCY-JFK. The BA1 was cancelled and so was rebooked ex LHR on a flight woith the closest departure time to the BA1. It took a day or two for the system to then rebook me DUB-LHR to make it whole again, What actually happened was that once they sorted out the DUB-LHR change they then had to change the LHR-JFK flight because of MCT issues.

      Patience is a virtue.

  • Will says:

anyone know if you can self refer for BAPP from a rewards gold? seems this is specifically banned in US, but UK Ts&Cs are less clear (if you are friends with yourself, split personalities need not apply)

    • memesweeper says:

You can, I wouldn’t though, I value my relationship with Amex too much

      • Will says:

thanks… if they made it clear in USA, why would they not be as clear in UK? but heeding your advice I have now found another family member with the same double referral bonus. that achieves the same result, but A refers A seems to be the same effect as A refers B who then refers A to a second product. You see any way that Amex could be upset by this? Also any UK evidence of churning Gold to avoid £140 fee – i accept in those circumstances could be denied a card, but would Amex issue a card and then cancel it on review? The loss of the bonus within 2 years should be sufficient to keep Amex happy, no?

    • Travel Strong says:

You can indeed. Do it at your own risk, but it works. I did and i’m happy with my choice.
