Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Thursday 21st January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Using a FTV with a 2-4-1 on it can you ring up and book a seat when they are released and then ring back up days later to add the return leg when those seats are released like you do normally?

  • N says:

I want to book to DXB then have my flight cancelled so I can rebook to dates that I want in the future. Are BA cancelling DXB at all? How can I maximise my chances of booking a flight that will be cancelled?

    • Anna says:

I think DXB is one of BA’s least likely to be cancelled routes TBH, though I assume there may be some cancellations coming up in the next few weeks.
Whether travel starts opening up in the spring is going to determine what is cancelled going forward.

Anyone else having a problem updating the points balance for Tesco Clubcard on Award Wallet? This started yesterday. Tried deleting Tesco and then re-registering the account but still getting the same error message.

    • Chrism20 says:

Mine worked fine this morning but it’s not unusual for it to time out and not update for days on end

  • Aris says:

OK, here’s a today I f*ed up story: I tried to use my AMEX Marriott £400 offer at around 1 week prior to the expiration, and booked a pre-paid rate room at the Langley. (Also I phoned them asking would the charge be made instantly and they said yes)

However, that appears to not be the case…I phoned them again and they said they are unable to do anything atm due to the hotel being closed.

I just want to know what are my best options? Can I still cancel a pre-paid rate without paying the penalty?

    • Anna says:

When is your booking for, is the hotel likely to be open then? Have you tried cancelling the stay via your Bonvoy account, it is possible to do this with some booking atm even if they are technically pre-paid.

      • Oli says:

I recently cancelled a prepaid booking by emailing the hotel and for a full refund – its at the hotels discretion. You have a good reason, email them explaining the offer and the assurances they gave you about being charged right away. I wouldn’t cancel via the app or central reservations team because you want the hotel to agree to the refund first.

        • Magic Mike says:

Aren’t all prepaid rates still cancellable until 24h before? The terms should be on the Marriott site.

  • @mkcol says:

Can I use a BA Future Travel Voucher to book BA Holidays? If so is it phone only?

    • Anna says:

If it’s a purely cash voucher (which I assume it is as you can’t pay for BA holiday with avios), you should have an email telling you to reply with your new booking reference which will trigger a refund for the amount of the voucher.

      • Nick says:

Anna, have you had that email for a cash flight? Or just a holiday? It’s interesting if you have because it’s not policy and is an error if you have……

        • Anna says:

Just for BA holiday bookings, but I haven’t cancelled any cash-only flights so I didn’t know there was a difference! I’ve got FTVs for 3 cancelled avios flights but understand you need to call to have these applied.

Does using a Tesco Debit Card for Premium Bonds get you points? If so, how long do they generally take to post?

Don’t really use Tesco normally but might as well take advantage of the Virgin bonus if I can. Need to make sure there’s enough in there by the 28th.

    • The real John says:

Don’t think so. It might do if you go through Curve, but then you could just use a credit card. If you need Tesco points then just try it out, PBs can be cashed out….

Points post in about 2-3 days usually.

    • Anttelli says:

I bought some premium bonds a couple of years ago and earned clubcard points on the transaction. Things may have changed in the meantime.

  • Andy says:

Can I pay my self assessment tax bill using the Curve card (backed by a debit card) next week, then upgrade to metal 1/2 months from now and use the back in time function to move it to a credit card without being charged any fees by Curve? Specifically looking to move it to the Virgin Atlantic credit card if that makes any difference

    • Chas says:

Go Back in Time can only be used for “purchases less than 90 days old and under £5,000”. I have never tried to do what your trying though (moving from debit to credit card) and can’t comment on whether there are any other restrictions such as the card needing to be in your curve account at the time of the original transaction.

      • Andy says:

Exactly, I would take out the metal one in 1/2 months time so I would be within the 90 days. I have had no issues moving transactions from my debit card to my new Virgin Atlantic credit card, so that won’t be a problem. And I can split my payments to keep them under 5k, so not an issue either. The question is whether they would charge me a fee for moving it to a credit card since the transaction pre-dates my metal subscription, but as I would do it only once the account is upgraded to metal hopefully not

        • Alex says:

Please note the metal will be another card, with another number etc so there is some change you can be caught and won’t be able to do this.
