Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 19th January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

How many points should I earn on a payment on my Marriott Amex for a £77 spend for a courtyard stay? It’s a prepayment for stay later in the year if that makes a difference. It posted today with 154 points….

    • Rob says:

Should be 10 per £1, so £770. Clearly the hotel (is it a new one?) isn’t in the Amex system yet as a Marriott property – or you’ve hit your cap of 20,000 bonus points under the 10x offer.

      • Tracy says:

Not hit my cap. It’s a courtyard at Glasgow airport, detail on Amex started as Ramada while pending before posting today as courtyard. Should I contact Amex about missing points?

        • RussellH says:

It was a Ramada when I stayed in Dec 2013.
Excellent value at £27 for the night!
But IIRC it has been a Courtyard for some years now, so I really ought not to be showing as Ramada at any time.

          • Genghis says:

We stayed in 2017 when it was definitely a Courtyard. Not a bad hotel actually.

      • James says:

Maybe just wait a couple of days for the system to catch up? And if nothing then, make contact?

        • Tracy says:

          Will do, thanks

          • meta says:

Yes, it can work the other way round. I got 6 points for spending at Pulitzer in Amsterdam (before 10 points offer) even though it left SPG(Marriott) in 2015.

How do i find Reward availability for Jan 2022? The reward flight finder site only shows up to Dec 21

  • Wally1976 says:

Just thinking…I’m very glad that I retained the Hilton Barclaycard and Lloyds Avios credit card as they are no longer available to new customers and I find them very useful. There are a number of other credit cards in the past that have also been closed for new applicants but continued to be very useful for their holders for quite some time afterwards.

So the question is, which cards that are currently available should we be getting in case they get pulled? I’m going to say the Virgin cards and the IHG free card (if you haven’t got the premium one) as a starter…

    • Chris Heyes says:

Wally1976 I agree i have the Lloyds Avios credit card (had the one before that)
I hardly ever use it though. Normally if any company won’t take Amex i walk
(sometimes company’s say they don’t take Amex when in fact they do)
Saying sorry I’m not ordering changes their mind lol
Although It’s very annoying that they lie about it

    IHG anniversary voucher.

Where do I find this? My first year with the IHG Premium ended last week and I can’t find anywhere in the IHG portal that shows the voucher.

    • Anna says:

It might need to wait for your 12 month statement to be generated, I think OH and I both got our vocuhers just after our statements arrived. Once it’s issued, it should show on the left of your account page on desktop, where your points collection counter is. It says “Free Night” and you can click on it to redeem.
If you’re one of the unlucky ones who don’t get the voucher, it sounds like you may have a lengthy tussle with IHG and Creation!

      • stevenhp1987 says:

Thanks. I’ll check back next week then (24th is the statement date).

Yes… I’ve read some stories about that on here!

      • Shaz says:

I haven’t had any points transferred for the last 3 months and waiting for free night to appear. IHG and Creation not responding to emails. I’ve missed the previous chats on how to get a resolution.

        • Anna says:

If you’re IC Ambassador their dedicated email address usually gets a fast response. Otherwise you might be better calling Customer Services. I would try Creation in the first instance to check whether they’ve sent the points and/or the voucher to IHG.

  • James says:

Why would you think the virgin cards would be pulled?

    • Wally1976 says:

I’m not suggesting they are going to be. Just saying that IF they WERE pulled at some point, you might well be very glad you had one!

  • KP says:

Am i right in saying that if I were to travel to Abu dhabi on Etihad and take the Etihad bus /taxi to go to Dubai, I need to fulfil the entry requirement for Dubai and not Abu Dhabi(Not to quarantine or wear a tag).

  • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Is there a trick for extending hotels.com rewards nights? I have until 20th March, which is a bit marginal to complete a stay.

    • Louie says:

      They’ve all been extended to 30 June 2021 – https://au.hotels.com/page/coronavirus-booking-information/

      • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Indeed they have. Thanks. Annoying that awardwallet doesn’t take that into consideration.

      • Rob says:

Last year mine were not extended despite a similar promise. A quick £4 hostel in Bangladesh sorted it out though.

    • Liz says:

I had a look the other night and mine says – “Book and stay by Mar 20, 2021 to keep your collected stamps and reward* nights. Just a reminder that we’re pausing any stamps and reward* nights due to expire from 1st April 2020 until at least the end of June 2021. Please note, your account may still show the old expiry date for now.” I take that to read that mine which expires on 20/3/21 doesn’t qualify for the extension???

  • John says:

Curve is down. Stuck outside in the cold with Uber cancelling due to declines before I twigged it’s Curve back to their old unreliable tricks.
