Another £175 of free money for American Express Platinum cardholders

American Express has launched another giveaway for holders of The Platinum Card.

This is presumably to convince them to keep paying the £575 annual fee for a lot of – admittedly very good – travel benefits at a time when no-one is travelling …..

This is what you should see when you look at the ‘Offers’ tab on your online statement. You MUST opt in to the offer.

It will only appear on your main card, not any supplementaries. It will not appear on Business Platinum cards.

IMPORTANT: I have the offer in the Amex app on my iPhone but it is NOT showing on the website. If you can’t see it in one spot, look in the other. Amex has confirmed to us that all cardholders will receive it.

What am I getting?

You will receive 100% cashback when you spend up to £175 (so basically £175 cashback) at:

  • Waitrose
  • Deliveroo
  • Harvey Nichols
  • Selfridges

Apart from Deliveroo, they are valid online or instore (when they reopen).

The offer runs to 18th July. This implies that it may be the last offer of its type that we see.

As a reader pointed out in the comments, it is a bit odd that Amex didn’t choose to make this ‘£30 per month for six months’. It would have done wonders for card retention.

How does the offer work?

The good news is that you don’t need to spend the £175 in one transaction, or even at the same retailer.

Each purchase you make at the above retailers will be refunded, 100%, onto your card within 2-3 days. This keeps on going until you hit the £175 cap.

Are all Platinum cardholders receiving this?

American Express says ‘Yes’. That said, I assume it won’t appear for people who are locked out of offers because they are in default or took advantage of the covid payment holidays.

If you do not see it – perhaps you are one of those people who haven’t received any offers for months due to IT issues – then I would call Amex to have it added.

Don’t forget to register before doing any spending!

  • Alex says:

Same here, this offer was not visible in my account, contacted chat and was swiftly added with out any resistance.

  • FlightDoctor says:

Just been to Waitrose and spent £100! Anyone beat me to it?

    • DT says:

Many spent yesterday when this offer came up, my wife needed no encouragement to head out and spend £130 at Waitrose and then ordered lunch on deliveroo. I now have have a generous £20 that I can spend 😃

  • hackinjack says:

It appeared on my app this morning, and just got an email from them highlighting this. Great, I do that easily in Waitrose.

  • mark2 says:

I am surprised that when people have itemised their statement credits from Platinum they have not mentioned ShopSmall. With the main card and two supplementaries you can get £150 back, twice in 2019!

    • Genghis says:

Equally, sensu stricto not a Plat benefit.

    • tony says:

And Shop Small also required you to spend in the first place – something that I struggled with last summer (away then in quarantine) and in December (because pretty much everything was closed). The £5 off a client lunch in London at the start of December, whilst appreciated, didn’t really make much of an impact…

    • Rob says:

You get that on all Amex cards though so it isn’t a reason to pay for Platinum.

  • John Pagani says:

No £175 for me and a rude, leave If you like when asked on the Platinum line!

  • General Mayhem says:

@ Ian M. it’ll pass – I went 4 years without a single offer – even shop small. Now I seem to get a lot! Not sure of logic…!

  • A says:

Can someone please clarify; you can use this for John Lewis, but only by buying John Lewis gift cards in store in Waitrose?
I think I have that right?

    • Andrew says:

      Correct.

      • Rob says:

Technically Waitrose gift cards but they are interchangeable.

        • Andrew says:

Technically they are a John Lewis partnership gift card showing both Waitrose and John Lewis logos. The only single branded John Lewis gift cards are sold in places like Tesco which for obvious reasons don’t want to be seen selling Waitrose gift cards, but they are still interchangeable at Waitrose.

    • Carlo says:

Can I use this offer to buy a Selfridges e-gift card instead? As there is no mention in the exclusions.

      • Andrew says:

No. The Selfridges gift cards are sold by a third party and you can see this redirect from their website, so won’t trigger. If the physical stores open before the expiry of the offer you can buy one in store. Harvey Nics gift cards are sold online by them directly, so they do trigger the offer.

  • Justin says:

I’ve spent more than the allotted allowance at Waitrose.

However, I normally get an email when I trigger applied offers but haven’t gotten one this time. Has anyone else not received an email confirming they’ve triggered the offer?

    • Andrew says:

The previous versions of this offer never triggered emails either. And generally it’s hit and miss on getting “used offer” emails so I wouldn’t worry.
