Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 18th January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Not sure if it’s possible but can you see the amount of points earned on the Virgin+ card?, in the app?
With Amex you can see how many points you’ve earned so far for the month before statement. I know virgin is capped at your monthly credit limit but be nice to know how close I am so I can swap spending to another card

    • Russel says:

You need to see how much you’ve spent and X by 1.5

      • Alex says:

Yes but I clear my spending weekly normally so can’t do this easily, is there no ongoing count you can see?

        • Youllnever says:

You can see this via “More” > “Flying Club”, but this will only show you the final points earned when the monthly statement is generated.

          • Youllnever says:

Just re-read your question again – no, there’s no ongoing count you can check. You’ll need to manually calculate how much you’ve spent in the transactions tab

        • TGLoyalty says:

Look at how much youve cleared each week and x1.5.

I’m sure You know you only earn up to your credit limit per month?

          • Alex says:

Thanks all – I’ll just have to keep a running total on my notes or something then. Rather annoying, hopefully now it’s app only they’ll improve it

  • BJ says:

My partner’s curve card expires end of the month. No replacement has arrived so far. Is this within the norm or should he contact them? Just a blue card, here’s hoping it comes with all the benefits of the original 🙂

    • Jay says:

They should message you to say a new card is in the post and then arrives c. 7 days before end of month. You then activate the new card in the app. Mine was Blue card. My wife’s expires at end of January and she hasn’t had her card yet.

    • Liz says:

Both our cards also expire this month. I had to send a message on both. Received mine, still waiting on hubby’s. We both had to answer some ID questions before they confirmed they were in the post.

For some reason Tesco’s Clubcard site seems to be really struggling today…

  • Travel Strong says:

Donald Russell £10 off £50 spend has appeared on my Amex Plat and supp (but not BAPP or Gold).

Excellent example of an offer working, as I’m a convert purely on the back of their amex offer a few months ago – would never have thought to use them otherwise, and now will have placed half dozen orders over as many months.

    • CF Frost says:

I’m a convert on the basis of just how weird it is. Meat by mail from rural Aberdeenshire. The huge polystyrene boxes are a PITA come recycling / bin day though.

      • BP says:

The box is a great insulator. I cooked the Christmas roast, wrapped it in tinfoil and stuck it back in the box. It was still hot 3 hours later!!

      • Travel Strong says:

I’ve kept all the boxes so far and I’m using them to store things in the attic. Also kept a couple empty for use as cool boxes / drinks coolers in the summer.

  • 747_Brat says:

    @Genghis
Is the extended warranty benefit available only on the free Premier card & not on the World Elite Card?
    Thanks.

  • Wally1976 says:

I had the free Creation IHG card and cancelled it around 2 years ago. Anyone know if I would be able to get this card again and, if so, would I be entitled to the 10,000 point bonus? Thanks.

  • Graeme says:

Hi, looking for help, booking a sale fare INV to LAX in PE, coming in at £420. Keen to upgrade with avios to J but the return is on AA metal (T class). Is this possible?

  • Anuj says:

I’m wondering if me or my parents are eligible for the business Amex. For sole trader do I need to have a registered company ? And as one of my parents are self employed, if they applied would they need a registered company or would the self employment be enough to apply?

    • Alex says:

I believe just a business bank account is enough but I may be wrong – I would ask again in tomorrow’s thread as it’s late now so may get missed
