Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 18th January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Isn’t the new Avios partnership due to be announced today?

    • Andrew says:

Today is the last day of Tesco – so tomorrow they will announce.

      • memesweeper says:

Tomorrow they *might* announce… could be delayed until they are ready to unveil the instore banners, actually allow earning, etc.

        • Rob says:

This would only make sense if Avios became a Nectar partner. For anyone else it requires a substantial change to their existing operation which is likely to be phased in. If it is Waitrose, for example, then the new combined JL / Waitrose loyalty scheme is unlikely to launch until JL stores are open again.

          • Dan says:

So is it Waitrose/JL then? 😛

          • Rob says:

            Honestly don’t know.

          • Doug M says:

Would be quite an IT step for Waitrose wouldn’t it. Their loyalty scheme as it stands seems to be you give us data, we give you nothing. Sorry forgetting the 50p off essential frozen veg every 8th week.

          • Rob says:

This loyalty scheme was tested in a few towns in late 2019. I assume the IT is therefore baked in now. What surprises me is that no HfP reader seems to have taken part.

    • Mouse says:

Can anyone say who it is?

  • RB says:

I now have a Tesco fast voucher issued – what do I do to get it into avios?

  • Maciek says:

What happened to the historical chat threads? I can’t find them anymore. I was specifically looking for the one suggesting that removing and re-adding cards to amex online account makes the offers flow in again – sadly it doesn’t work for me.

    • Rhys says:

We hide them from the homepage. Search for ‘chat thread’ plus the date and you’ll find it.

Times article today “ Mutation could undo Covid vaccination progress if lockdown is ended, expert warns”

Does anyone know the experts logic as to how the vaccine will be effective against mutations once we lockdown for the whole of 2021 and vaccinate everyone.

I’m no expert but if the virus continues to mutate indefinitely and those mutations make current vaccines redundant aren’t we back to square one?

Only way I can see this working is if we shut the borders full stop and barricade ourselves on this island for ever.

    • David S says:

I can’t help thinking that this is Boris’s idea anyway…..or that’s what it feels like

    • Sandgrounder says:

Every year a new vaccine will be produced to tackle the new strains and distributed, in the same way the flu vaccine is. In 2019 we invited 25m and 15m had the jab. The problem is that with flu, exposure to one strain gives long-lasting partial immunity to other strains. We don’t know if that will be the case with Covid-19. We might need to vaccinate more people each year than we do for flu. However, once we get the production and distribution infrastructure in place, it should be manageable.

    • TGLoyalty says:

It’s a virus it will mutate.

Is the public really buying this is a two
Shot solution to the virus forever?

      • Alan says:

I dont think anyone has claimed it is.

It might be it might not, all viruses mutate but some much more slowly than others and many vaccines work for 10yrs or more before needing reformulation.

      • callum says:

Has anyone (in authority) made such a claim?

Not that your insinuation that it can’t be a “two shot solution” is valid. Many vaccines for viruses work in that fashion, not to mention a couple have been completely eradicated (Smallpox being the only one in humans).

Granted, with the ways things are going, it’s looking like this might be “the new flu”, but no-one could possibly know that yet.

    • kitten says:

This is looking like 4 jabs a year if protection is only 4-6 months

  • Helen says:

Does anyone have a Now TV box in their garage I could buy (stick doesn’t work with my very old tv) ?

    • Sandgrounder says:

I had one a few years old I used on the upstairs TV, and an update this year totally disabled it, so you may have trouble finding one that works. If it’s a port issue, you could consider a SCART to HDMI adapter?

    • Owain says:

I have one, that I would be happy to send for the cost of postage and packaging.

  • James says:

What is the latest I can claim a FTV with BA?

    • memesweeper says:

I got one within a few hours of my first flight in the booking being due to leave, online.

  • Sandra says:

BBC news reporting that the Australian D of H Secretary (he is also the doctor who quickly closed their borders last March) has said Australia is unlikely to open its borders in 2021 even if all their population is vaccinated due to worries that even after vaccination there may still be transmission of the virus. He also said the current 14 day quarantine requirements would continue for some time.

  • Grant says:

Reposting this from last night for those who may not have seen it.

Amex are doing a free 12 month trial to Blinkist Premium. It’s supposedly US only but I’ve tried it and it works. You can turn off the auto-renew as soon as you’ve signed up for the trial and it will continue to let you have access until the end of your trial period.
