The HfP chat thread – Thursday 14th January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Is there any connection between the lack of a daily death number being published today, and Hancock crowing about 3m vaccinations. An element of news management going on? Surely not…..

  • Bee says:

But does having the amex reward card affect getting the gold and its bonus?

    • Rob says:

Yes, because it is a Membership Rewards card so you are blocked from Gold and Plat bonuses.

  • Paul Dryden says:

Has anyone recently cancelled a BA Premium Amex? Are they offering any incentives to stay?

    • Lev441 says:

Additional Avios per £1 spent for 3 months is what I got

      • Mike says:

Anyone have any experience of them offering anything else after the 1 extra Avios per £ spend promo runs out?

  • aDifferentSimon says:

    reward flight question:
I want to go to lapland this December – there is economy availability for hel-ivl now.
If lhr-hel ever becomes available can I get BA to join the reward flights into one booking?
And if that is possible would that make a difference to the taxes due and / or the cancellation fees?
    Thanks!

    • ChrisC says:

      No they can’t do that.

They will remain as two separate bookings and all that entails.

    • Mco says:

See if you can get a seat on the direct LGW-IVL flight. They run 3 days a week.

      • aDifferentSimon says:

I’m not sure it’s running at the moment – BA aren’t even going to Helsinki at the mo in Dec – just finnair

  • Alekun says:

Anybody having issues with converting tesco Clubcard vouchers to a iOS via the Clubcard app?

    Or is it just me.

  • GR says:

Thoughts on the best non-Amex to use for funding NS&I? Virgin+ ?

I see Virgin boosted the sign-up bonus to £25k about this time last year – is there much chance of them doing it again?

    • Rob says:

Virgin Money, if you read its accounts, is doing its best to stop taking on new customers whilst it deals with bad debts from the existing base. Hard to see them doing a big bonus.

    • Johm says:

Use creation card or HSBC Premier card

  • Boi says:

So my Amex gold card anniversary is May 2021. Looking online I see the spend count adjusted to November-meaning everything spent prior to November isn’t showing on my tracker (this is over 7K spend. I enquired with Amex and this is the reply I got:
“Though your account opening date is May 2020, the anniversary date for spending tracker bonus, has been applied as Nov 2020 on the account considering the current covid situation and so that you would have more time to meet the spend criteria and be eligible for the bonus.”

    Anyone got that?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Sounds like someone making stuff up.

Did you apply for another MR based card in November?

    • 747_Brat says:

Does this mean that even if you hit the bonus before May 2021, you would not be able to receive your 10K annual bonus before Nov 2021? 🙄

      • kitten says:

        Yes, this is the danger.
I think I would manually make sure I met the spend, then call up and demand the bonus when it was originally due (if that suited me).

Otherwise as you say, much longer till you can get the next one if you are still in a position to meet the target in the original time

    • Grant says:

This explains the problem I thought I was having with the spend tracker. I had been meaning to ask Amex about it but have been tracking my spend manually using statements.

As 747 mentioned, I won’t be happy if this means the annual bonus is delayed – you bet they won’t delay taking next year’s annual fee!
