British Airways has teamed up with luxury suitcase brand Globe-Trotter for a limited edition range of luggage.

The handmade carry-on suitcases celebrate the retirement of the Boeing 747 from BA’s fleet and the end of the “jumbo jet” era.

The cases are delightfully retro. Here is an official description:

“The suitcases are made from high gloss vulcanised fibreboard with a metallic sheen for a pearlescent white shimmer, which is complemented by Navy leather trim on the corners and handles. The hand-painted ‘Gold Speedbird’ insignia adorns the exterior, while the 747 fragment decorates the interior.”

Each suitcase will also include an original piece of a British Airways Boeing 747 mounted on the interior lid:

Just 150 cases will be available. The case will set you back a cool £1,935, or £2,060 if you want it initialled!

You can buy one on the Globe-Trotter website here or in-store.

Or bid for one in a charity auction

Two of these suitcases are being auctioned in aid of British Airways charity Flying Start.

These are even more exclusive because they were on BA’s very last Boeing 747 flight on the 11th Decemeber from Cardiff to St Athans on the BOAC 747 retrojet.

They have also been signed by the flight’s captain and BA’s chief training pilot Richard Allen-Williams.

You can bid for the suitcases here, starting at £2,000. Bidding ends at 23:59 on Tuesday, 19th January.

How much????This could be more lucrative than their art sale….

  • Scott says:

Hopefully they wouldn’t lose this suitcase!!

    • Andrew says:

Unlikely as it’s a cabin one.

      • AJA says:

Unless it gets put in the hold due to insufficient space on board. Or some other passenger steals it.

The thing is £2k plus for a cabin bag is OTT and why white? It will scuff and get dirty pretty quickly even if only ever kept indoors. And the 747 bit is a tiny square on the inside. I originally thought they were going to make a traditional trunk out of the metal or make something like Rimowa offers.

  • Ed E says:

One is already up to £3,900 in the auction and the other at £3,000.
    Wow…

    • TGLoyalty says:

Either a loon or trolls and they never settle.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Serves me right for posting before reading properly

It’s for charity and £2k anyway I’m sure they’ll fetch a few more k before it ends.

  • Baji Nahid says:

Curious why the pilots have signed it. Like i get the aesthetic of it, but its like someone you don’t even know or has ever made a difference to your life has left their mark on the bag? Would cater more towards Av Geeks and the likes.

    • Rhys says:

Likely to be a collector’s item. If you don’t want the signature you can always purchase one without having to bid!

  • ChrisW says:

Why didn’t they make 1,000 of these to raise some much needed cash??

  • Dirtyneedlebluesky says:

£2k!! I’ll wait until they appear in Home Bargains!!! 😅

  • Greenpen says:

Why such a tiny piece of the B747? If the whole case was made from the aeroplane that would be great but a thumbnail sized square of aluminium (?) hardly makes it an attractive memento. A lot of other bits around with direct connections to the B747.

  • IanM says:

They don’t have wheels, highly impractical 🙂

    • AndyC says:

…no telescoping handle either – even more impractical…😩

    • Rhys says:

You’re both wrong! Check the photos on the Globe Trotter site 🙂

      • Andrew says:

Was just going to say – they have wheels and a telescopic! It’s the Globe Trotter classic cabin – I’ve got one and they are fantastic.
