The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 12th January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

It’s that time again folks, its Tuesday , its five o’clock, its time to play Priti Patel Bingo.

First to call house wins an exemption from Plod if you cycle 7 miles from home on ones daily exercise.
The words are; Doin, But also, Movin Forward, The fact of the matter is, The Key Thing, Absolutely, Let me be Clear, Quite Frankly, Going Forward, Committed to Doin, Non existent Number. You get a line if she smirks along the lines of the Eton Clown.
    Enjoy.

      • mr_jetlag says:

“What was slightly horrible, was that from the stream of sound that poured out of her mouth it was almost impossible to distinguish a single word. Just once Winston caught a phrase -‘we are committed to doin’- jerked out very rapidly and, as it seemed, all in one piece, like a line of type cast solid. For the rest it was just a noise, a quack-quack-quacking. And yet, though you could not actually hear what she was saying, you could not be in any doubt about its general nature.

She might be demanding sterner measures against thought-criminals and saboteurs, she might be fulminating against the atrocities of the EU, she might be praising Big Bojo — it made no difference… Winston had a curious feeling that this was not a real human being but some kind of dummy. It was not the woman’s brain that was speaking, it was her larynx. The stuff that was coming out of her consisted of words, but it was not speech in the true sense: it was a noise uttered in unconsciousness, like the quacking of a duck.

Obviously Diane Abbott would have done a much better job.

      • James says:

        Damn right Mark

      • Doommonger says:

She may well have done, (though unlikely) a slight problem which slightly invalidates your point is she is no longer the opposition shadow home secretary.

        • mark2 says:

Although the coalition parties would have claimed some big jobs so we might have Jo Swinson or Ian Blackford.

          • ChrisC says:

Jo Swinson lost her seat in 2019,

BTW there is no guarentee that a shadow will become the post holder if their party wins a general election.

One Theresa May was Shadow Work & Pensions Secretary before the 2010 election yet was appointed as Home Secretary over Chris ‘failing’ Grayling who was the Shadow.

      • dezbez says:

Some quality ’whataboutery’ there. I’m no DA fan but I’m not sure that’s quite the point.
If the defence is we know she’s bad but not quite as bad as someone who’s never done the job but we suspect would be really bad if she had done it, then that’s a pretty poor defence tbh.

      • Chrisasaurus says:

Three thousand millionty hundred percent sure!

    • The cyclist says:

Do I get a prize for the fact of the matter is ….three times😀?

    • Chrism20 says:

I’m sure she said “We are in a pandemic” at least ten times. Does she think no one has noticed? Also she mixed up all the letters for JCVI at least once as well.

  • James says:

I know this will have been asked a million times before but can someone tell me if Bendy + either Beardy or the Creators to pay Ernie currently have fees? and same question for paying a tax bill?

  • Anuj says:

I asked Amex to transfer a credit balance from one card to my other card with a bill due. It’s processed today and instead of removing £444 from my bill it’s added £444 to my bill. You’d think they’d have processes to stop mistakes like this. What if I hadn’t noticed?! (Easily possible if it gets hidden amongst other transactions).

    • Andrew says:

Used to happen all the time when I would request to move charges from Flexselect to Charge on my Platinum – I got so bored of getting these double charges I closed the credit line and kept it as charge only.

    • Travel Strong says:

They lost my balance once for a few months. Went missing in the transfer and resulted in a slightly drawn out investigation with confusion abound! Since then i’ve asked for balances in credit sent to my bank account instead.

  • SCC says:

Hi Crew , some urgent advice needed , I’m being denied rerouting with BA due to the mass long haul suspensions – having booked both Avios and a cash ticket also . Can anyone point Me to the latest rebooking policies for both ticket types as not getting rebooking agreed !

    • BS says:

You won’t get them to agree it, but you are due it under EC261.
Do not cancel your BA flight or accept a refund. Book a replacement and claim the cost using MCOL/CEDR.

    • TGLoyalty says:

How long has it been since they cancelled your flight? Advice takes a while to filter out and it’s updated regularly.

I’m assuming you’re asking for the flight to be rebooked for a long time in the future? I would sit back and relax while they sort their shit out then try again later.

      • SCC says:

Hi , No they are for relocating permanently Overseas as we are citizens so reroute is the only option we are wanting ! Looking for rerouting for Feb or March

        • kitten says:

listen to TG give it a week and try again.
ps their policies may actually not adhere to the law and you could take it further but give them a chance

          • SCC says:

Thanks TG and all – cancellations were in the batches of 01dec and 15 Dec with all the other long haul cancellations , for travel in Feb. Appreciate the guidance -if anyone knows the link to where BA Public polices are refreshed to check daily could you post the link here – many thanks for the advice.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Mmm in that case they should know the rules and already know the options

I think you need to start getting insistent and ask for it to be escalated. Perhaps reinforce your stance that this is your right under EC261(or the new UK equivalent though IAG are Spanish)

Always be polite but firm in my experience.

          • ChrisC says:

” …under EC261(or the new UK equivalent though IAG are Spanish)”

There is no new UK equivalent.

EU261 was put into UK law in 2005 via Statutory Instrument. Nothing has changed about it and nor will it until Parliament rescinds or amends it.

Thus BA is still covered by it.

IAG isn’t an airline so isn’t covered by the regulation.

          • TGLoyalty says:

I didn’t mean the equivalent legislation but rather than equivalent reference (SI 2005/975) looking at CAA website.

Which as you rightly say is just the original SI it was incorporated under.

  • Baji Nahid says:

I was just looking up some lounges and noticed a condition for entry into one lounge which stated:

“Smart casual dress at all times (no sportswear allowed)”

Has uniform policy ever been enforced at lounges? I do visit lounges in my adidas trackies for example before a long haul flight but nobody has said anything to me before. I have some folk in sportswear in lounges too.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Always been there

Normally it just means no football / rugby etc tops

Depends on the person on the door if they want to enforce or not.

    • ChrisC says:

Depends which lounges these are and if they are airline or commercial.

    • Alex says:

I have worn some less than smart causal to say the least and never been stopped. I agree I think it’s aimed at football shirts and very sporty clothes. I’ve worn shorts and trainers without issue, my girlfriend will often wear baggy tracksuits on long-haul and never been stopped.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

We had a discussion last year which brought out the unpleasant side in a few, but the concern us seems to be if you look like a yob they might enforce it, if you come across like a civilised person then, as should be everyone’s position, it matters not what you choose to wear

    • Andrew says:

Qatar have a very strict policy for their lounge in BKK – not even tailored shorts are allowed! I think it’s a way to limit people in the lounge as it’s quite small – the Doha lounge has no such rules. Staff at checkin will issue lounge invitation cards for the lounge they consider you’re appropriately dressed for.

    • Ming The Merciless says:

I was barred from Quantas lounge while flying F due to thongs… or flip flops to the UK population

      • Jonathan says:

Australia is the only “western” country I know that enforces dress codes fairly routinely in lounges.

In the Middle East I’d avoid shorts as a matter of courtesy but others may disagree.

      • kitten says:

QF Lounge guards seem to have a particular abhorrence of jandals, yes

  • Baji Nahid says:

Regarding the virgin status match, if you are ticketed by virgin but are flying on a partner airline like KLM would that be sufficient evidence to say that you have a VS booking?

  • Youllnever says:

Rob, the webpage’s width looks a bit broken on page 5 of the comments. On desktop, the right column is now at the bottom of the page.

  • DAJ says:

Just tried logging in to my account and up popped a warning (Safari browser) stating that the website had been subject of a data breach and that my password was compromised and should be changed. Interestingly, what prompted my visit to the site was that my app stated my password was not recognised.

Anyone else having any issues? Worried due to previous BA data issues!

    • TGLoyalty says:

You don’t say where you tried logging into!

    • tom1 says:

I think this is a new feature in Safari (on Mac Big Sur I think)- checks to see if your password is on a known-list of leaked data.

      • DAJ says:

Thanks for that. I have seen this feature but I suppose my concern is that I used my Safari browser after I had tried to use my app which stated that my password was not recognised (I certainly haven’t changed it in recent times).

Anyway, password now changed but just wanted to flag this up in case there was a wider issue.

        Cheers

        • Craig says:

If you go into preferences/passwords in Safari it highlights which websites it has security recommendations for.
