Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 12th January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Data point (although not sure of how much interest right now…) – just done a small IHG transfer to VS as I needed to do a small top up to my account for a booking. Requested on Sunday, landed today. Advertised time is 4-6 weeks!

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Useful data point but has to be said that’s a niche transfer!

      • Andrew says:

And very poor value 10,000 IHG = 2000 miles. Surely cheaper to just buy?

        • The Original Nick. says:

          Or transfer from MR account.

        • dezbez says:

I couldn’t bring myself to buy them. I’ve accrued loads of IHG points over the last couple of years very easily which I’m struggling to use and as I only needed to transfer a small amount figured it was worth doing.

      • dezbez says:

Yes, I figured it might be. The IHG CS agent even had to go away to ask his manager to find out how to do it!

Does anyone save Etihad Guests Miles and kind enough to offer some assistance? Have a chunk I can’t use but don’t want to lose. Says on Etihad’s website:

‘1 August 2020, your miles are valid for 18 months plus an additional 18 months with any eligible miles transaction, including earning, spending or buying miles.’

I put these last ones in 28 + 29th June 2019 which had an 18 month shelf life in their own right but this was before the 1st August 2020 T&C change. So am I covered or should I chuck some MR over just to be sure or will that make any difference and I’m doomed! Thanks all.

I had last miles transaction in December 2019. I booked a flight with all my miles in early Feb 2020. I cancelled the flight (no F apartments) in October. My miles expire on 31/01/2022. It should say on the desktop site when they expire.

    • BJ says:

Remember you can cash them out if you want.

      • Russ says:

Thanks Meta and BJ. End date is in a few weeks. I think I’ll just book a hotel then if they cancel it may be offerred a voucher for a later stay. Thanks again.

  • Mike says:

Does Binance top up work with Curve (HSBC WEMC)?

  • Wally1976 says:

Anyone know if it’s possible for my wife to transfer her Amex MR points to MY Marriott Bonvoy account? Failing that, any ways around the 100,000 point limit on Marriott to Marriott transfers? Thanks

  • Baji Nahid says:

Not sure if this was covered before, but just seen that Now TV are also being dropped from clubcard voucher schemes from the 31st of January.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Is there actually anything useful left!

    • BJ says:

Yes, been discussed. Moved some over but not so happy as I only use NTV for golf and am sorely missing the week pass. Another good product gone bad.

  • Sina says:

Anyone knows if it’s possible to get the 10% off by using Clubcard Plus to buy gift cards?

The terms says no, but anyone tried it?
