Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 11th January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

why have thesr new switch-off-phone icons popped up today next to posting names?

  • Trainee says:

Hi all – I’m new on the credit card game and took the AMEX Gold card as my first serious attempt of getting points to fuel my (mostly leisure) travel. I’ve now successfully triggered the 20k Avios welcome bonus but with my free first year coming to an end I was wondering where I should go next?

Personally I can’t really justify the annual fee for the AMEX BA PP card as I won’t hit the required spend to trigger the 2-for-1 voucher. I’m therefore inclined to go for the ‘normal’ BA AMEX – with no fee.

Am I missing any obvious other contenders? I’m mainly flying BA and unlikely to shift to any other airline.

    • Rhys says:

The ARCC card is another free option and more flexible than BA since you earn MR points rather than just Avios. https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2021/01/07/review-american-express-rewards-credit-card-2/

    • Dan says:

You could get the BAPP purely for the sign up bonus? You get 25,000 Avios for £3k spend in 3 months + 3000 Avios for adding a supp. Once you’ve achieved that then you can cancel and get the ARCC. You’d only be paying £49 for 32,500 Avios.

      • Trainee says:

Thanks Dan/Rhys! These are some very valuable suggestions! Hadn’t thought of the ARCC card as a way to retain the MR points.

I also quite like the BAPP suggestion and will do some calculations based on my “Covid” spent.

        Thanks!

        • Dan says:

No problem. If you struggle to hit the £3k spend due to lower COVID expenditure, remember there are options to bring forward some spend – buying gift cards (from retailers that you know won’t go bust); topping up your Amazon account, overpaying any bills that take Amex etc.

    • ChrisC says:

There a whole section on this site devoted to credit card offers. Have a read of those as it will spell out all the pros and cons of each card.

Australia loosening the entry cap from 500 to 850 a fortnight in a Northern Territory quarantine camp.

Priority to be given to Australian who want / need to return home.

Are countries actually allowed under international law, to deny their own citizens entry?

  • Dr C says:

Anyone have a trading212 ref code that works?

      • Dr C says:

        Thanks will do later

      • Danny says:

I posted a message last night and this morning to let Brat knows that I used his trading121 code and then posted my code but why have both of my messages been blocked?

        • 747_Brat says:

Thanks Danny. Appreciate you using my code. 🙂

        • Rhys says:

We’ve introduced a new filter to stop the comments being spammed by referral codes. Here are the informal rules:
          1. T212 referral to be posted only if someone asks for one. Don’t start posting unsolicited referrals.
          2. Only ONE referral comment will be allowed (the first person to reply).

          • ChrisC says:

Rhys could you and Rob consider having a separate part of the site for people wanting codes and those that have them?

At times there have been so many that it makes the endless posts about bendy et al seem miniscule!

And please don’t say ‘just scroll past’ because you still have to see them!

          • Rhys says:

Might be part of the forum in the future. For now we are limiting them as mentioned above.

          • kitten says:

So no conga’s so everyone uses a code once and then posts for the next person?

Would seem fairer than 1 quick person posting their referral codeagain and again quickly to whoever asks for one.

Not that I gave anything against 747_Brat 🙂

          • Rhys says:

That wasn’t what was happening, though! In reality we just had threads with loads of referrals and it isn’t very interesting 🙂

    • DodgyDCF says:

For reference these are the shares they’re giving out, they seem to be reoccurring:

      3x AstraZeneca (£70)
      SPCE ($25)
      2xGE ($11)
      EasyJet (£7)
      Royal Dutch (£14)

Can people report what they get when they sign up?

  • GaryE says:

On the subjet of the Paypal /Amex offer – has anyone done the payment to a friend and if so did it work and you got either the £15 or £50 credit from Amex? TIA

    • Tariq says:

Yes my partner and I did it with our cards on my SPG Amex. Both got trigger emails pretty much straight away. Used some of the PayPal balance and then withdrew the rest straight away to bank.

  • Dave says:

I’m still a bit confused over FTVs for companion voucher bookings. So, in my case I booked a CW flight to Haneda for May 2021 for me and my wife. I then booked the return as a separate booking and phoned up to get them linked with the miles added back to my account. So I have two PNRS with the companion voucher connected to my first flight.

How does that work with the FTV? If I cancelled both flights would I end up with one FTV for 90000avios and a companion voucher plus the £700 and one for 90000 avios and whatever I paid?

Basically I would want to use the FTVs to rebook Japan. Would I be able to book it all online or would it necessitate phoneing up?

    • TGLoyalty says:

You will have to phone in either case as only cash vouchers are e vouchers.

If you give them the PNR numbers they will sort out the rest.

  • Doug M says:

Just confirmation that TAP are noting in the email you receive that gifting Gold is not possible form the status match offer.

“You can now enjoy all your status benefits, with the exception of those mentioned on the Point 3.5.2. of this Campaign’s Regulations (Gold Partner nomination and Physical Card issue request).”

  • stevenhp1987 says:

British Airways and Future Travel Vouchers question.

If I booked during the 50% avios sale and request a FTV how will it work?

Will I need to top-up the Avios in order to use it or will I be able to simply re-do a booking with the 50% off?

Our May flights to Japan are cancelled and looking at booking to SFO, back from LAS in September (being optimistic!).

    • TGLoyalty says:

The FTV is the value of the avios and fees paid. So you will need to pay any difference.

If your Japan flights are cancelled you can rebook for a later date?

    • Optimus Prime says:

Cancelled by BA? What dates had you booked?

    • ChrisC says:

If flights have been cancelled you can rebook to same destination for no extra cash or avios.

If you decide to cancel and take FTV and use that to book another destination then yes you’ll have to pay any extra cash / avios.

      • stevenhp1987 says:

        Answering to all:

LHR to HND then KIX to LHR.

BA are not even flying the KIX route atm, can we request to change our dates to October and re-route with JAL (presumably to HND then BA to LHR).

If that’s possible then that’s a winner, although I’d be a little surprised at that (ability to move it forward AND re-route)!

        • kitten says:

If you booked KIX and BA cancels they have to provide transport to get you to KIX. Whether via HND or anywhere else.

You dont have to settle for just NRT or HND

    • andy says:

What dates were you flying? I’m flying to HND in April and as far as I’m aware my flights are still going!

      • stevenhp1987 says:

15th May out, 31st May back (to HND, back from KIX).

Both our HND and KIX flights were cancelled.

BA have scaled back HND flights and removed KIX completely.

This was our first BA 2-4-1 redemption… rebooked from 2020! The voucher expires in November :/

        • TGLoyalty says:

As long as you can/still want to go somewhere in Japan It doesn’t matter when the 2-4-1 runs out or even if there is Avios availability anymore.

Have you rang BA to discuss your options?

        • Dave says:

We fly May 14th and back on the 30th May. Still seem to be running for now although who knows if we’ll be able to fly.

I don’t know when our companion voucher expires, will i be able to check before i decide whether to take an FTV if the flight gets cancelled?

Also, does there need to be avios availability to use a FTV with companion voucher or will they just book it for any date i like?

          • kitten says:

dont take an FTV that means avios seats must be found for your new date and it will reprice on pricing as though new ticket.

If BA cancels any flight within your ticket you have full right to choose any other date suiting you at your choice not just within BA’s preferred 2 weeks. And there is then no restriction applicable to having an avios seat.

Always better to preserve the whole seat value by insisting on a rebook even on someone else if they cancelled the whole route. An FTV should only be taken if extending the expiry of a voucher or a refund if you can make better use of the cash
