Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Sunday 10th January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Hello!
I used the Etihad offer (250£ of 500£).
My flight was cancelled. If I request the money back, will the credit from the offer be removed?

    • memesweeper says:

      It should be.

    • Rob says:

It might be – it depends if Etihad reverses the original transaction, which means Amex will take the money back, or if it makes a separate payment to your Amex account, in which case Amex won’t recognise it as a refund. I would imagine the former though.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Usually it’s the first if it’s a simple transaction.

      • Andrew says:

My experience with retail in store refunds is the credit is reversed then too – and that is a separate transaction putting your card into the terminal and sending a refund to your account rather than a reversal of a previous charge.

    • Matty says:

I called yesterday to get a credit. I was on the telephone for all of 5 minutes. Very simple process. I’d booked a flight for £503. Etihad emailed a credit voucher for the full value – similar to BA. The credit also included a US$60 credit on top and 5000 miles to my account. I have 2 years to use the voucher. Doesn’t have to be the same route or country and anyone can use the voucher.

  • John says:

I booked a flight with Ryanair. The flight is still going but I don’t want to go with the current situation. If I submit this to Amex travel insurance, could I get any sort of compensation?

    • Rob says:

      No

      • TGLoyalty says:

Is that right when you’re unable to travel due to government restrictions?

        • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Are we unable to travel in law?

          • Rob says:

            Er, no.

The CAA, to be fair, thinks airlines should refund customers in the current situation. I disagree. Try your travel insurance. If the flight is going and you have a ticket for it then why should you be refunded? If the airlines had been given huge bailouts it may be different but they haven’t.

Great Western wouldn’t give me a cash refund for a train ticket I had booked and they are under defacto Government control, so it is a bit rich of the CAA to think privately run airlines should pay up.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Yes you are unable to leave home for leisure travel

          • TGLoyalty says:

the OP IS asking about making a claim on their travel insurance.

I think they should try a claim.

          • kitten says:

Plus if anyone’s noticed, the rail companies seem to have been spectacularly silent about any extensions for railcards or other concessions for not being able to use the railcard that was pre-paid for a year but utterly useless and quite a lot of that due to lack of services not just problems with people being allowed to travel.

No concessions have been announced whatsoever on these so far as I’m aware. and yet the airlines have been as generous as they can.

    • Andrew says:

Disinclination to travel is specifically excluded from the policy.

      • A says:

        This made me laugh!

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

I dont think disinclination really applies when it is against the law!

        • memesweeper says:

If you booked with insurance that doesn’t cover being unable to fly due to government regulations then you are not covered.

It’s always been the case that if you buy a RyanAir ticket and then cannot fly, tough. This is a good reason to avoid them during a pandemic when other carriers are offering limited or full flexibility included in the ticket price.

          • Yorkieflyer says:

Ryanair have been a lifeline for many in continuing to operate a reduced schedule with often very low load factors when every other airline has abandoned pax who need to travel, for once all credit to Michael o Leary

          • kitten says:

…. If you were lucky enough to be based near one of the airports they didn’t pull out of for the whole winter 🙁

        • Yorkieflyer says:

No you are ok to travel in some circumstances, how can an airline know your situation?

          • TGLoyalty says:

Op clearly states “ Amex travel insurance” the claim would detail the circumstances.

  • Kevin says:

Do you need any COVID test done if travel with Qatar, from London and transit at Doha to Asia countries? TIA

  • Graham says:

I want to extend a companion voucher so need to book a avios flight, cancel it and claim a FTV. Anyone know What is the best destination to do this to for minimum avios/cost

    • Alex says:

To tie up the least amount of avios/cash something like Manchester or Scotland, I’ve done it with Paris in the past. Just pick the shortest flight you can find if you’re just planning to cancel it anyway.

    • Doc says:

A single domestic trip (even one way) could do it to minimise the cash element

  • KBufett says:

Does anyone know where I can buy discounted iTunes credit from, and what level of discount I can get? Hoping for 20% or more

  • Rob says:

    I’ve never seen it!

  • Eric says:

Most cost efficient platform to buy Crypto? Thinking Coinbase. Any referrals welcome.

    • Harrier25 says:

You can buy Crypto extremely cost efficiently with a Revolut Premium Account.

    • Mr. AC says:

Most efficient imo is indeed Coinbase – but what you need specifically is Coinbase Pro, since that’s where you get the lowest fees I’m aware of for non-professional traders on a reputable exchange (0.5%). Register on Coinbase first (I think you might need to buy some token amount of crypto there first), then navigate to pro.coinbase.com.
Revolut wants 2.5% on the free tier and 1.5% on Premium, and you don’t even get the real thing (it’s a CFD).
Referral: https://www.coinbase.com/join/cherny_yl ($10 worth of BTC. Many years ago I got a similar one… Now worth $250+)
