We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Hi!
What happen If I cancel my platinum card (but I have others) were I’m still waiting money back from an offer? Would they go to another card or will I loose them? (It is the selfridges offer £30 back on £100 spend)

    • Nick says:

You forfeit any offer credit if the card is cancelled before it’s paid.

    • jil says:

amex offer should be credited to your account a few days after you made the purchase, can you wait for the offer to be credited then cancel?

      • babyg says:

I had the selfridges offer £30 back on £100 spend, it hasnt posted yet, the webchat people said “up to” 90 days… its been about 30 already…

      • Princess says:

I usually get the credit after few days, but it happen to me also with the previous Selfridges offer back in summer. I had to wait almost 2 months…

        • Mr(s) Entitled says:

You are paying £50pcm for the Platinum card. I wouldn’t be hanging around to collect £30

          • TGLoyalty says:

While I agree you never know what offer <£50 will drop next week.

            It’s all a game.

I’ve taken 50k MR so will stick with it for a little while yet.

  • David S says:

What do you all make of the BA class action advert relating to the Data Breach that was on TV last night ?

    • TGLoyalty says:

You have to think if it’s worth spending on tv adverts these lawyers are going to make a shed load of cash.

Did you personally lose out from the breach?

    • Lister says:

‘Paddle your own Kanoo’ is reporting a £3 billion compensation claim with a possible £6000 per nut.

      • Doug M says:

Lawyers interest to feed large numbers into public domain. Do you see each claim netting the individual £6K?

        • Rob says:

Given that Boeing only paid $2bn to settle claims by the families of those who did in the MAX crashes ….

          • ChrisC says:

Only $500m of this weeks $2.5bn settlement is for the families.

Airlines get $1.7bn and the balance ($243m) is the actual fine to settle the criminal case for Boeing lying to the US regulators.

          • Rhys says:

            Article tomorrow. It’s shocking.

          • TGLoyalty says:

            Only the lawyers win …

          • Pangolin says:

VW paid $2.8bn in the US for rigging its emissions tests.

Good job that Boeing didn’t do with that the MAX, otherwise they’d be in serious trouble!

          • Bagoly says:

@Pangolin – I suggest that the difference in the punishment/evil ratio is due to VW being foreign, while Boeing is American, and so given an easier time.
How much of that is because the American establishment expects to be invested in American firms but not foreign ones, is an interesting question.

          • ankomonkey says:

It seems like a 737 (non-Max) went down in Indonesian waters earlier today.

          • Charlieface says:

Quote: “If Boeing complies with the terms of the settlement, in three years the government will drop the criminal charge. That’s important for Boeing, a huge federal defense contractor, because a criminal conviction would prohibit the company from getting future government contracts.”

So standard Justice Department corruption then…

          • Doug M says:

Right or wrong it’s just business. The US Gov is not going to create a situation where Boeing can no longer bid for defence contracts. The only good thing in this is the part that says Boeing off the hook, but not individual employees. You just hope if anyone is held accountable they’re high enough in the food chain to be significant in what happened, and not just easy wins.

Data Point: Offered 10,000 MR for £2,500 spend/3 months to keep Amex Gold

    • Buxton says:

Me too, asked if it was trackable in the app as I couldn’t see a progress bar, got told by the Amex tech team its manually tracked. So you can phone up or use the date range for transactions on the website.

Just in case anyone gets this offer too and wonders why it isn’t showing for them!

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

      Whens your renewal?

      • 747_Brat says:

Did you get this offer from Brighton or Manila? I almost always get through to Manila, and they never offer me anything!

        • thehornets says:

Brighton, this morning. Called the number on the back of the card.

          • 747_Brat says:

Thank you. I called again today (last try was pre Xmas) and was finally offered the retention bonus.

The lady in Manila tried to play smart and offered me the 10,000 MR points for £15k spend annual bonus. When I told her that this is a guaranteed offer for everyone with a Gold card, she went back and finally offered me the 10,000 MR points for £2,500 spend in 3 months to keep Amex Gold. 😎

            I have 2 quick questions:
            1. She mentioned it will be good 48 hours before the offer is applied to my account. She wasn’t sure if I would receive an email confirming the offer is now live. Does anyone know about this?

            2. Would I receive the bonus points after I pay the fee or would I receive the points as soon as I hit the target?

            Thanks in advance.

      • thehornets says:

        Mine’s next week.

    • YC says:

is this the second time getting a retention offer since Q2 2020?

    • mutley says:

£2500, enough for 5 season in the Rookery, UUUUornnns!

  • babyg says:

Oh dear, another Boeing 737 (not max thou) gone missing, hope its nothing major… https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-55601909

    • memesweeper says:

‘Flight tracking website Flightradar24.com said the aircraft had lost more than 3,000m (10,000ft) in altitude in less than a minute.’

That sounds pretty major to me 🙁

      It’s an old (Classic) model.

    • Pangolin says:

In 25 seconds it went from a positive rate of 530m to a negative rate of 1330m. Just 20 seconds later (the last ADS track) it was -3,600m.

Basically it dropped like a stone with only a slight change in bearing to begin with (41 to 36, then 346 on the last ADS).

    • kitten says:

      Uh-oh.
Did I see somewhere that Ryanair’s bought 200 of these planes?

      • AJA says:

It’s not the Max variant that crashed. It’s a 26 year old 737-500.

      • kitten says:

Who on earth allowed these planes to keep flying?

        • Nick_C says:

Nothing wrong with operating a 26 year old aircraft as long as it is properly maintained. BA was flying planes that old before Covid.

The 737 Max of course did not keep flying, and was grounded for about 18 months (from memory. Not checked).

        • Cat says:

Indonesia’s Civil Aviation Authority, I think.

They’re not exactly renowned for their stringent regulations.

        • Brian W says:

Some of BA’s 777’s are about 23/24 years old.

          • Mike says:

As BA is over 100 years old, how many pax have died on its planes in its history? It’s got to be a lot…

Quite inconvenient to claim you’re 100 then want to dismiss all the Comet crashes prior to 1974.

  • The Savage Squirrel says:

Re: Ticketing more than 1 year in advance.
I’m sure I read recently it wasn’t possible. IATA rule to prevent ticketing for the wrong year or something similar?
But today I see Jet2 have released their summer 2022 flights?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Imagine it won’t be ticketed straight away?

    • Nkp says:

Not that unusual to be able to book a package holiday +1 year ahead of time. Assume flight just gets ticketed later.

    • ChrisC says:

Jet 2 does not appear to be a member of IATA so isn’t subject to their rules.

      https://www.iata.org/en/about/members/airline-list/?search=jet&ordering=Relevance

      • Colin MacKinnon says:

Also not members of any arbitration scheme – so when it goes wrong, it’s court time.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Jet2 is one of the better ones. Perhaps they’d rather just be sensible and pay out than waste lots of resource on fighting valid claims and in “arbitration”.

        • The Savage Squirrel says:

True but that doesn’t put me off. In extremis you still have the same rights, and Small Claims Court is a doddle. No harder than filling in an arbitration form. On balance I’d rather fly with an airline that has a clear history of not messing about with ridiculous refusals to get to that stage in the first place.

    • Charlieface says:

IATA allow it in case of IRROPS

      • Charlieface says:

I know that’s not relevant here, just wanted to put it out there because BA keep quoting it

  • Aston100 says:

Hello, can someone kindly advise how much Avios I’d receive in the following scenario. I’ve rounded the prices up to keep it simple.

I have the Dell £100 statement credit offer for a £750 spend.
Six weeks ago, I purchased a laptop for £500.
Last week, I was given a BAPP retention offer of an extra Avios per pound spent.
This morning, I purchased a laptop for £700 (this will be shipping on Monday so it should hit my Amex before the statement credit qualifying period ends).
I am unsure if any Avios is awarded on a purchase price prior to a statement credit.
I am unsure when the additional one bonus Avios per pound is awarded – I don’t think it is calculated at time of purchase?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Andrew says:

Hope you took advantage of the many Dell offers out there for employees of their many partners!

If you check the app, it gives line by line details of the point transactions.

      • 747_Brat says:

        @Andrew
Are you talking about Dell offers from Perks at Work, or something else?

        • Andrew says:

That’s one of them. I’ve got 6% and 10% “WOW” points on my two different log ins at the moment.

Also discount codes available for other employers.

Was quite chuffed with my last purchase. Think it was 10% discount, followed by 10% in WOW points, and £100 back from Amex.

          £950 with 10% discount making it £855
Then 10% WOW back (needed chasing) £85.50
          Then £100 from Amex

          £950 headline, £669.50 net cost.

    • AJA says:

You should get the Avios based on the purchase price of £700. The Dell statement credit does not reduce the Avios you will receive. Therefore if your retention offer is an extra Avios per £ then it should be £700 x 2.5 = 1,750

      • Aston100 says:

        Thank you.
So overall, £500 * 1.5 + £700 * 2.5 = 2500 avios, and the £100 statement credit will not affect the avios earnt against the original purchase prices.

At least, that is what I think I’m taking away from your post.

  • Vasco says:

Apparently the Amex partnership with Shangrila will end on the 31 March. Those enrolled before then will keep status until the end of the year though.

Mentioned yesterday and indeed on page 1 of this comments section. Articles on HfP are coming.

My bad, I don’t usually read these!

      • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

My Jade membership (received 07/20 via Amex Bus Plat) shows as expiring 12/22 in the Shangri La app

  • Paul says:

Just a data point in case others in a similar position. I just cancelled a 9 day trip to Austria with a few days in Vienna followed by a week skiing. The hotel had waived its cancellation terms and BA was a 241 Avios booking that was exchanged for vouchers.
That just left 2 round trip business class ÖBB railjet tickets which were non refundable and which cost €210. I contacted OBB on Wednesday and they replied today putting a voucher in my online account for the same amount which is valid till 2031. A masterclass in customer service!
