The HfP chat thread – Friday 8th January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Before lockdown I had some Expertflyer flight alerts set up on BA flights over the next few weeks and just noticed MLE which was zeroed out virtually everyday has just gone to wide open in all classes. So travellers must have cancelled as its primarily a leisure route.

    The reason for this post is does anyone know why BA would have no seats open yesterday evening and F2 A2 J9 C9 D9 R9 I9 W9 E9 T9 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q9 O9 G9 today. I can’t see most of the passengers cancelling overnight.

    • ChrisC says:

They zero everythjing out for two main reasons

      1. they are cancelling ot thinking of cencelling the flight so if they stop the ability of people booking they then have less passengers to refund / rebook

      2. they are swapping the plane type and it gives them chance to rejig the seating

      • meta says:

The route has been suspended till mid-Feb according to FT.

        • babyg says:

@meta, think that’s a rumour (MLE suspended) flights are still for sale in Jan, currently ba060 is in the air…

        • TGLoyalty says:

Get in while you can. Move flights to a later more popular date 🙂

      • Mco says:

They haven’t zeroed out. It’s gone from being zerored to wide open overnight.

    • babyg says:

they have swapped the new 777(new clubsuite) to an old 777 on some flights, they have also added a 2nd daily flight BA1003

  • Raj says:

    Morning all,

Just a quick update in relation to Lloyds Avios voucher bookings after my call with them yesterday.

If your BA flights get cancelled, you can get a full refund, and the Lloyds Avios voucher back, which will have a new expiry date of 31 March 2021. This is a “book by”, and not “fly by” date.

If your BA flights are not cancelled, and you are due to fly up to 28 February 2021, you would be allowed to rebook your flights even if this goes beyond the original ticket validity period (this is 1 year from the time you made the original booking). Obviously, there must be Avios availability on your new dates.

If you decide to cancel the booking entirely, normal Ts & Cs apply and you’d lose the voucher completely.

I was looking to rebook my end of January flights, but have just received an email from Avios that my flights are cancelled.

    Hope that is helpful.

  • Mike says:

Is it possible to get all Amex’s in one persons name, primary and supp on one login? How is that achieved?

    • Anna says:

No – a supp holder will have to have their own account but supp cards can be added to an existing account IME. (So I have had my own BAPP and gold plus my supp on OH’s BAPP on the same AMex account at one time).

    • Rob says:

Yes, just add the supp as you would add a new card. My wife has a Supp Plat and primary Gold on the same online account.

    • mark2 says:

I did that, and then separated them again!

      • JohnT says:

I have sometimes had a card they couldn’t add to an existing account, annoying but livable. Sometimes they cam merge after a statement period or 2.

  • Anna says:

And as I predicted yesterday, the DM is already complaining that the police are taking lockdown enforcement rules too far …

    • Andrew says:

The Home Sec has asked them to step it up, so it’s good that it’s happening and people are noticing.

      • Anna says:

My point was that the DM will use it to stir up animosity whichever way it goes!

        • Phil says:

A fluffy bunny could be saved from a life of kindness and be given a life super kindness and the DM headline would be, “Fluffy Bunny is a Healthcare Tourist!!!”

        • Alan says:

Often both ways at the same time. All that matters to them is getting more clicks

      • TGLoyalty says:

It’s good that police are bagging into peoples homes and physically tackling them because they MAY have someone from outside their bubble in their home?

I didn’t realise we were moving towards a totalitarian society.

        • Anna says:

There appears to be a power of entry under the covid regulations (this may just apply to Scotland though, it’s not clear), in which case they were perfectly justified. As for tackling anyone, were they not assaulted first?!

          • TGLoyalty says:

unable to tell from the footage.

            https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-55560814

Silly season is upon us. 5 miles is local in anyone’s books.

          • Anna says:

I was referring to the incident in Aberdeen where 3 people were arrested for assaulting police officers.

However, Derbyshire police should know better than trying to dictate the “spirit of the law” because they know they will lose every time if legally challenged. This just makes them look officious and uninformed. When I was a police trainer I used to warn recruits that they would only make themselves look foolish (and dishonest) if they were to claim that their powers extended further than they actually did. It can also lead to severe disciplinary action so the best course of action is always transparency.

          • Anna says:

In fact this is even more cringe-worthy as it was Derbyshire police who tried to stop people exercising in the Peak District during the first lockdown and were forced to back down!

          • TGLoyalty says:

I was referring to the incident in Aberdeen where 3 people were arrested for assaulting police officers.

So was I, you’re unable to tell from the footage who assaulted who first. I see the officer in the Hi Vis push the male in the house first then it all goes blurry.

          • TGLoyalty says:

            Re powers of entry.

However, in England, they can only enter in ‘exceptional circumstances’, which includes if they believe someone inside is infectious. Otherwise, they will require a warrant.

          • Number9 says:

My friends daughter had the police barge their way in on NYE. Some one had told the police they were having a party. Only the two homeowners in property and they were playing a board game.
            They live in South Bucks.

          • Anna says:

But TG, this is not report of police entering a premises in England, and I am not sufficiently motivated to familiarise myself with the Scottish position! Also what would they require a warrant for unless they were going to search the place? Again I don’t know about Scotland but there is far less use of warrants in England and Wales than people think.

Number9, that sounds rather irregular. The officers should either have given details of their power of entry if applicable or asked if the occupier would allow them to come into the house (which the occupier can agree to or not).

          • Number9 says:

Anna, that’s what I told their Mum, but young couple late twenties didn’t know their rights. They were intimidated.

          • TGLoyalty says:

@Anna I know I was clarifying on your question about changes to forcing entry in England from the SI.

I think the issue is people assume police has the power to barge their way into your home and know know you can just say nope stay outside please.

Let’s be honest why would most people as you may have had no contact with the police before.

          • Anna says:

TG & Number9, agree with you both! It does nobody any favours for the police to pretend they have powers they don’t. On the police side of things it leads to expensive litigation and damage to the relationship with the public. In recent years there has been a move towards the police acting as independent evidence gatherers rather than dispensers of justice, which is how it should be given that we have courts to deal with the latter. I’m not even a fan of FPN because it assumes that everyone has equal means to pay, which clearly they don’t!
Anyway, this is from the College of Policing:
“Schedule 21 of the Coronavirus Act allows an officer to enter a property where they have reasonable grounds to suspect that a person within is potentially infectious, and they need to direct or remove the person for screening and assessment”.
So, Number9, if the lady’s neighbours had reported that someone with covid was having a party then the police MAY have had a power of entry, however I would expect this to take place in consultation with PHE as the police themselves obviously don’t have any screening and assessment facilities. If there was no reason to suspect that anyone in the house had covid, there was no power of entry under the Coronavirus Regulations.

          • Number9 says:

Unfortunately Anna I think we will see a lot of malicious reporting if you don’t get on with neighbours etc.

          • Anna says:

That’s always been the case, unfortunately, and it creates a lot of work! I have known people be pursued for wasting police time if they are serial offenders. It can also constitute harassment if it’s persistent, so people shouldn’t just put up with it.

          • kitten says:

power of entry is a really dangerous thing

          • kitten says:

Does someone who is the victim of a nasty neughbour reporting rubbish have any right to know which neighbour? or would you have to make sure you found out another way?

        • Charlieface says:

This country has become a bunch of virtue-signallers and curtain twitchers. Do police really think someone is going to catch Covid outdoors? There are almost no known cases of that so far

          • old bob says:

I get on with most my neighbours, well some of them, I was reported by one of them for urinating into their hedge on New Years Eve ( technically it was New Years Day) In my defence I was a bit worse for wear, and the frankly the police had better things to do, I think it was related to another incident a number of years ago when my immediate neighbours had a street party to celebrate the queens Diamond Jubilee, and I passed out on her lawn after too much home made punch. Since then relations have been a bit frosty.

          • Anna says:

Urinating in your neighbour’s hedge is not one of the accepted reasons for being out of your house!

          • Jamie says:

How do you know this Charlieface?

          • kitten says:

Pretty sure the Germans have a specific offence covering that?

  • ChrisC says:

Posted this in the recept IHG/Spire thread but thought more people would see it if I reposted here as well.

Just had it confirmed via web chat that the 2021 target for Spire is 55 qualifying nights / 55k qualifying spend.

Agent I ‘spoke’ to on the web chat said they would raise the web / app mismatch

    • Andrew says:

That’s good news then. I’ve got so many points sitting in my account I could hit Spire by redeeming 55 nights if we are able to travel by the summer.

  • RussellH says:

    Marriott MasterCard Bonvoy points update.

Still no December points credited, but January ones are in my account this morning.
So, I have just e-mailed my contact at Marriott’s Cork office who has been very helpful indeed when points have been wrong in the past. [Hope she is still working there!]

    • RussellH says:

Just had an answer to my e-mail.

“Thank you for your email and a very Happy New Year!
Yes, there was a problem with the December file and these
      have not yet posted.
After being in communication with HQ and BNP for the last 2
weeks on this matter, I was told on Wednesday that these
points will post over the next few days.
I am going to check Tuesday again to see if these have
posted otherwise, I will need to reach out again.”

This person has **always** been able to sort out any missing points problems, so I do believe what is said above.

  • Dora says:

Tesco Clubcard 100% Avios bonus from tomorrow! Finally!

    • Tracey says:

      Link please?

    • Andrew says:

I knew it was sensible to hold off until the final hours – nothing lost by doing so either, zero gamble (except the prospect of forgetting!)

    • BuildBackBetter says:

is that another one of those BJ’s teases?

    • 747_Brat says:

I had a reminder email from BAEC this morning, but it made no mention of any sort of bonus, simply quoting the £2.50 = 600 Avios rate! 🙄

  • YC says:

Hoping to visit Cornwall (1st time) later this year. Any hotel recommendations that are at a similar level to the Idle Rocks?
