The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 6th January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    @DodgyDCF
    Used your code to sign-up for Trading212, which you shared on the chat couple of days ago. Thank you. 🙂

    Since you specifically asked for it, I got a free share of Virgin Galactic.

    • DodgyDCF says:

      Nice 🙂

    • Sam says:

      I was thinking of signing up and was just going to ask for a code but was going to do the practice first. A bit confused as to which account I should be opening, CFD or Invest. I already have a stocks and shares ISA with Vanguard. Not planning to go mad on Trading212, any money I put in (not a lot initially) I can lose to get to grips with it – not that my intention is that of course!

      • 747_Brat says:

        I would say open both the CFD and Invest accounts. But most likely, you are going to use only the Invest account (just like me).

        If you decide to invest in CFD contracts in future, you will have the account ready to trade. And you can always practice CFS contracts on T212, before you put in some of your hard earned money.

        • kitten says:

          is the CFD account programmed for sound yet? Like, when ‘Submit’ is clicked, does it make the sound of a flushing toilet ?

      • Grant says:

        If you just want to be able to buy and sell shares then you will only need an Invest account. CFDs are for speculating on the movement of a share price without owning the share.

      • Genghis says:

        If you’re a complete novice, avoid CFDs like the plague.

        • Sam says:

          Thanks for your replies all, I’ve been reading up on CFD’s (and about Trading212 generally) Genghis and I agree, not for me yet unless I’m willing to lose the money!
          @747_Brat , I’ve made a note of your code so will let you know once I have signed up and will use your code! Hoping to do it in the next few days. Thanks!

        • TGLoyalty says:

          100% agree CFDs are not for novices

        • 747_Brat says:

          @Sam
          That’s very kind of you. Thank you. 🙂

    • Louise says:

      Have just signed up with your free code, thanks

    • Ravi says:

      How does Trading212 work is it fee free?

      • 747_Brat says:

        @Ravi
        Trading212 is a commission free trading platform. Apart from shares trading, it offers ISA and CFD trading accounts. Trading212 is particularly handy for investing in US stocks vs traditional trading houses like HL, where they charge £11.95 dealing fee and 1% FX fee.

    Did I read a few months ago that BA 241s earned before 31 March (?) have a longer validity?

  • idontfly says:

    phoned up to cancel BA black amex and was offered 2.5 points per £1 spend for the next 3 months up from the standard 1.5 points. Guess I will keep it rolling on for a bit longer, is this standard or are Amex feeling the pinch?

    • Aston100 says:

      It is the standard offer.
      1 extra Avios per pound spent.
      Several people (including myself) have been offered this exact ‘retention deal’ since at least September.

      • Aston100 says:

        That said, when my wife phoned up to cancel her BAPP a month ago, they didn’t offer anything. In fact, the subject of retention or loyalty did not come up. They didn’t even ask her for a reason for cancelling.
        She wasn’t going to keep the card anyway, so no loss on this occasion. Bit scary that Amex may have got their metrics right and determined that it wasn’t worth offering her an incentive not to cancel.

    • Eric says:

      Got offered that as well.

      So when the 3 months is up, I wonder what will they offer or nothing at all…

    • xcalx says:

      Phoned last Thursday to cancel Gold card as the 1st year is up next week. I was surprised to be offered 5000 pts for a £1k spend. Spend done over weekend and cancelled today .

  • Brian W says:

    Data point – My Jan 2021 cheap Red by Dufry deal DragonPass lounge passes are now showing an expiry date of 6th Jan 2022 so a 12 month extension as reported.

  • Tom1 says:

  • Louie says:
