The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 6th January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Is it possible to top-up Trading212 using bendy + creative? If yes, does it attracts any cash advance or interest charges? And do I need to pay off the amount on the same day to escape the charges?
    Thanks.

    • Genghis says:

      Give it a go!

      • 747_Brat says:

I gave it a go with a £100 top-up, but the transaction got declined! And I haven’t done any MCC 6012 transactions on IHG this week! 🙁

        • TGLoyalty says:

Creation doesn’t like HL or iWeb either so suspect its not allowed.

    • The real John says:

      Doesn’t T212 charge 0.7% extra for non-bank transfer topups?

      • Sprout says:

You get a £2k one off allowance. Once you’ve used that it’s 0.7%

    • DodgyDCF says:

Bendy + lloyds no issues. Any issues will be with underlying card.

      • h2d says:

The rules were changed as of the 4th January 2021 so now after a lifetime £2k top-up via debit/credit card T212 will charge 0.7%. Never been a need to use Bendy for me when topping up via CC

  • Tony says:

Creation IHG: Your account has restricted functionality. Please call one of our service representatives on XXXX XXX XXXX for more information.

Has anyone been in the same boat? How did it play out? I have been naughty with this card.

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Only way to find out if to call them.

It could be anything from your card being blocked by the anti-fraud systems to them performing proof of funds for your payments.

I’ve had the later several months ago and just sent them a statement of my other account I was using to pay it off with. Card was shortly re-activated an hour or so later.

    • Genghis says:

Accounts are blocked occasionally. Were you emailed? I’ve been sent an email once asking to call; they just wanted to confirm I had used the card in Paris for lunch. Normally they don’t even bother notifying you your account has been blocked and you need to call in. Just call in.

    • Christoper Ingold says:

I’ve had this before due to my payments to Creation. After a call the situation was rectified quickly and I was back to churning the card the next day.

I don’t think Creation cares much/at all about manufactured spend activity 😉

    • Sprout says:

Just had the same. They wanted proof of ID and address and then normal service resumed 😉

  • Russel says:

Some transfer companies allow you to send abroad using credit or debit card. I need to send abroad. Are the any cards which don’t charge a fee? or do any cards via bendy work fee free?

    • Mr. AC says:

Transferwise (but there’s a fee on their side). On Creation if going indirectly, no cash advance fee but you need to pay off immediately to avoid interest on cash. TransferGo very similar, I think.

    • Charlieface says:

Halifax Clarity and Santander Zero, but you need to pay immediately to avoid interest

  • Bruce says:

hello everyone, is everyone aware of Inspirato program? looked into the program and quite fascinating. maybe Rob & co should help introduce? Thanks

  • Wollhouse says:

Well, a joyful hour on phone with BA. 3 different bookings impacted – one flight only/paid with cash; one flight + car/paid with cash; one avios and 241 – naturally, that’s 3 separate departments…. The first two – per chat yesterday, I’m playing chicken and waiting for BA to cancel so I can be rerouted as the flights were great value! The final one – flights from EDI-BKK cancelled and BA previously refused to reroute. Today was initially told the same; was then told he’d check to see if Avios seats were available, then was told they couldn’t reroute. When I asked him to check as this was incorrect, he went away and came back and said in order to reroute, he would have to refund the 241 and I would have to pay the difference for the other passenger in Avios. Based on all the helpful comments here, I refused as I believe this is incorrect??? I really can’t work out whether BA is deliberately making this difficult or their agents really haven’t had the correct training?

    • meta says:

BA deliberately trains their agents to break the law by refusing EC261 rights.

      • Anna says:

Oh yeah, they have a script!

      • Aston100 says:

I wish someone would start some kind of group action against BA.
There is plenty of anecdotal evidence in the comments section of this site alone to confirm that BA are likely deliberately breaking rules and possibly laws.

        • Anna says:

I think the problem might be BA would have to be persued for each individual claim first to prove that they were breaking the law, and as they usually pay up when formally challenged, this might be a dead end. However, I can’t understand why the CAA always rolls over with BA when it has been pretty assertive with offenders like Ryanair!

    • kitten says:

      it’s cr4p
if ba cancels avios seats not needed for rebook. any seat same cabin you can have.

      • Wollhouse says:

Yes- the issue is BA is not flying to Bangkok at all when my flights were booked so I’m asking for EDI- BKK with Qatar. BA can’t put me on their own metal as they’re not scheduling flights until October. (Although this whole exercise may be moot as I’m not confident I’m going anywhere come sept!)

        • jc says:

Unless you’re demanding that the Qatar flights happen at a later date of your choosing (rather than as soon as possible after the original flight), you’re totally entitled to what you’re asking for per EC261 (Article 8) and corresponding CAA guidance

        • kitten says:

s75 on credit card after a couple of refusals – consequential losses cover on s75 gets you replacement tkt cost on Qatar.

Do it now and excellent chance your card pays whatever tkt
replacement cost you just charge it but it will be netted off on yr statement so you wont pay.

mcol also available but timing is tight for hearing to come up before you would have to pay out for tkt. unreasonable for BA to expect you to sit around till nearly Oct while they decide….you need certainty for your other travel plans now.

Tell BA you will s75 it if it they keep refusing your rights which you are entitled to choose as soon as they cancelled. With a bit of luck s75 like chargeback costs them at the card networks so they might react.

BA really are abusing customers aren’t they

        • Paul B says:

Where was your BA origin? If EDI, BA have to reroute. No need for Avios availability, no need for a Oneworld carrier, no need to be less than 12 months since ticketed. However, you cannot choose your carrier and if your BA origin was LHR you have to start from there. Just keep calling back until they offer you something that you would accept.

  • Wollhouse says:

On a note that might be more helpful for some, after many failed email attempts to reach Curve, I rang the stolen credit card number on the back and spoke to a LIVE person…..

    • Aston100 says:

Did they handle your query as normal, or did they suggest you don’t call that number again in future?

      • Wollhouse says:

they were actually fine – I have had a few issues and she took a note of all of them, my main issue being that my credit limit after upgrading had been wiped to almost useless. Which made the point of upgrading pretty pointless! the agent highlighted this as my main issue and i got the email asking for the id info within about 10 minutes. but agree with the other posters on here – trying to contact them via email is a waste of time and one of my issues is that contact within the app doesn’t work for me – messages won’t send!

    • Wollhouse says:

Update to Curve- I then got sent an email asking me to provide a selfie and a copy of my passport picture and within about 2 hours, my issue was sorted (I’d upgraded to metal and my limits had been massively reduced) So definitely a good way to contact Curve if you’re having issues getting a response.

  • Pthy887 says:

Relatively new to this – I have an HMRC bill to pay (sub £4k), and have the basic free Curve. I only have AMEX UK cards so before I end up paying with a debit card I have a couple of questions:

    a) Is there a way to use Curve with a US denominated credit card without incurring FX fees?
    b) What would be the best way of paying HMRC (unsure of what Fronted / non-fronted payments are, and whether these are eligible only under premium plans)
    c) If I have to sign up for a premium plan for the above payment, can I do it just for this month and get a pro-rated refund?

Just looking to seize any opportunity to generate points if possible.

    Thanks,

    P

    • mzb says:

I’ve used a Curve card in the past with a US Visa/MC. So long as the US card doesn’t charge for FX, there’s no additional fees (since the charge will go through in GBPs)

    • TGLoyalty says:

IF you have a none UK issued card you change the “home Currency” on the card to be GBP and it’ll be charged in GBP

Same if you had a 0 FX UK issued card and were abroad you could avoid any potential FX fees by changing the home currency to whatever it is where you are (not really an issue but the options there)

      • Pthy887 says:

Thanks both for your answers – will do this.

In terms of questions b) and c), what would be the best way to approach this HMRC payment? Any input appreciated, thanks!

        • Matt says:

          C) 6 month minimum term for curve metal. No pro rata refund.
If you will only be using the card for this bill it won’t come near justifying the fee.

    • The real John says:

If you set the card currency to USD, supposedly the basic curve only does free FX up to £500. Not sure what will happen if you try to pay £4000.

If the American card has free FX you can set the currency to GBP.

  • BSI1978 says:

Trying to find something on yesterday’s chat but cannot find the thread anywhere…..?!
