This one had passed me by, but Malmaison is gearing up to open a hotel in York this Spring. See here.
Based in the converted Aviva offices, it is well placed for tourists. The hotel sits between the railway station and the city centre, on the same side of the river as the station.
It will provide additional competition for IHG’s Principal York which is directly next to the railway station. This is a troubled hotel and I had a bad stay there last Summer.
In a conversation with the manager afterwards – who refunded the entire cost of both rooms I had booked – she admitted that it has serious issues. The problem is that a small fortune was spent refurbishing the public areas, which would not be out of place in a London 5-star, but the rooms are poor. Guests are never pleasantly surprised when they open their door.
The Malmaison York website is here. It’s worth noting that IHG also opened Hotel Indigo York last year which has decent feedback.
