The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 5th January

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • kitten says:

the lady known as Nick_C has been around a lot longer than you and made a sustained contribution to the community here over that time. I hope she continues.

You and your colleague below do not appear to have made such a contribution although you would be welcome to.

Meanwhile if obeying the law and protecting others is inconvenient to you then it’s a bit disappointing that you appear to be personally criticising a well established helpful poster who gently is requesting would-be travellers comply, for now

    • TGLoyalty says:

Obeying the law and protecting people.

If there is such a compulsion to protect people why does the law matter?

Staying at home would have been the right thing to do regardless of what Boris’ advice was between Feb and now.

    • Tocsin says:

      +1, kitten!

    • Cat says:

Because not everyone possesses such a compulsion TGLoyalty – some people only care about themselves.

+ 1 Kitten – Nick_C knows her stuff, and appears to be pretty well aware of the facts, and more than capable of analysis.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Sounds like most only care about the law though …

        • Cat says:

I’m of the (increasingly rare) opinion that people should care about morality and legality, but I think you’re right about that TGLoyalty, sadly.

    • Jamie says:

Never heard of you either so that’s fine. “Gently requesting” aka repeatedly making sanctimonious, unhelpful posts. Helpful about nothing except guilt tripping people etc.

      • Nick says:

People pointing out restrictions and the reasons behind them are welcome. It’s called community, and diversity of thought. And if you can’t accept people with opinions different from your own, maybe you should bugger off somewhere instead.

        • Jamie says:

+1 Nick (from a VERY different Jamie)

        • Cat says:

That’s because you’ve been here for about 5 minutes, Jamie.

This sort of hostile, insulting post is exactly why we’ve lost some of the most helpful, knowledgeable members of our wonderful community in recent months.

      • Blindman says:

If you don’t like it then don’t read it….

I skim over all the Amex stuff, Bendy, beardy Che (?) etc

IMHO Covidiots do need reminding that this is a serious virus for some, even if not for them

        • marcw says:

… and like with any contagious disease, healthy people are there to protect the vulnerable. That’s why following the rules and recommendations is paramount (including vaccination). Thanks for all your valuable analysis and information you provide.

  • WaynedP says:

VS flight to JNB on 18 Jan just been cancelled (as expected).

This should also solve the problem for the recent poster regarding her son’s flight with VS to CPT on 9 Jan.

    • Ben says:

Ah mine has been cancelled on the 19th Jan. Shame as it was in the VS sale for £999.

Let’s hope they run another sale.

I do wonder what they mean by “ Your ticket will automatically remain open and you can rebook to travel before 31DEC22.” is that the voucher

      • Danny says:

yes it’s basically a voucher. but instead of giving you a voucher code they just leave the booking ref in the system with “OPE -> NTK” as the route, a record of how much you paid, and you can phone them some other time and slot a new route into the booking

      • Charlieface says:

You can always demand a rebooking under EC261

  • Boi says:

So I have been asked to provide source of funds by Revolut. What should I expect?

Will they continue to serve me once everything is done or is this inevitable closure no matter what I do?

    • Grant says:

Based on the experience of others who write about it here, the latter.

    • Genghis says:

Does your SoF support your spend? Good luck – you’ll need it!

      • Boi says:

Well, if we look at combined salary and savings it could…. but I guess I need loads of luck.

If it is going to be closed anyway can I just do nothing without through the hussle?

        • Alex says:

If you have no funds currently sat in your Revolut then I would potentially just walk away and find another path. If you have money tied up with them then I would go through the process, especially if your funds can cover the amount. Let us know how it goes!

          • Blenz101 says:

You are obliged to cooperate with their investigation under clause 19.1.

I would provide them with whatever they ask and wait for them to close your account for a breach of their terms (abuse of services or similar).

If you refuse and attempt to just walk away then it is much more likely they will close the account with a presumption of fraud. If you want credit in the future, even a remortgage, then you really don’t want them reporting fraud markers to credit reference agencies / CIFAS.

          • Harrier25 says:

They’ve requested proof of funds from me twice…in October and last month and to date, they haven’t yet bothered to review any of my uploads. You can’t even get an online chat with an adviser. Revolut are in a complete mess!!

    • Blenz101 says:

I’ve advocated on several other threads about the massive care needed when gaming the system with cards such as Revolut. They have the technology and systems in place to notice when cardholder behavior is abnormal.

Take a look at clause 19.1, they will of course decide if any of these apply and if the activity is suspicious enough to inform other agencies.

And yes, I accept it is possible you have just hit a spend limit and have not been involved in any questionable behaviour. BUT, given you asked the question on this site on a thread which talks about this type of activity almost daily I think the warning remains relevant.

      • Boi says:

Thanks for input. I have done forex exchange a lot this week. Simply because I am trying to move funds after relocation. They haven’t actually blocked me yet. I can still move the money out.

        • Alex says:

I am curious to know what levels of top-up’s you’ve been doing if you’d be willing to share? Also how do you move funds out, bank account or purchases etc?

        • BJ says:

Good luck with this Boi, and I hope the move went well.

          • Boi says:

Thanks BJ. Move went very well. We are just waiting fir covid to be over (don’t we all) to start exploring Canada.

And thanks guys. They have not blocked me yet, which is a positive for now. I really like Revolut, so far they have offered excellent exchange rate.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Tbf it’s not always a means to closure. I was asked for evidence, I provided and it was unlocked and I have used it for various reasons over the 18 months since.

But I’ve never abused any of my many routes I’ve just put through what I know I can justify through salary, savings and a bit of BS. Though not if they were all to talk to each other ofcourse 😉

        • Boi says:

As I said, I can actually prove the source of funds. I was transferring from my savings to Rev then to bank account in Canada. Ofcourse the savings went via cc. That is the abuse in this instance.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Perhaps just a rap on the wrist.

          • BJ says:

Possibly just because you moved the funds overseas. Briefest of proof you had funds here and that you are now settled and living there is all it’ll take.

          • Harrier25 says:

As I’ve said in this thread above, they asked me for proof of income and a business bank statement, first in October and again last month. I’ve not taken the micky and have uploaded more than they requested. They haven’t reviewed any of the uploaded documents yet and I haven’t been blocked. I have started using the debit card for day to day purchases hoping that will assist my cause. I do feel that too many on here wish to be dramatic rather than helpful!

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

Partner just got one. She has never done anything untoward. Two recent c1,000 euro transactions for accommodation. That’s it.

    • Paul says:

Theres so much fake news on here about revolut.

I have spent topped up hundreds of thousands by card this year and had to go through verify funds process twice. You just have to explain where the money comes from simple as that.

I use revolut too for kids accounts. Great product, great company.

      • Harrier25 says:

Agreed. The Curve Appreciation Society on here will never get or understand the benefits of Revolut.

      • Mr. AC says:

Interesting. They’ve explicitly told me in chat (after a similar verify funds request) to knock it off with the topups. They’ve also told me that topping up GBP and then sending the money on to another GBP account of mine (as opposed to spending or exchanging it) is also against the ToS. So I’m steering clear of that now, since I do value Revolut for other reasons as well.

    • The Urbanite says:

I’ve been through it enough times and been fine. Provide what they ask for and as long as your income supports spend you’ll be fine.

      • ashish says:

I got ban from Credit Card tops ups after 2 warning. I never tried again, deleted ap

  • BJ says:

Perhaps if all the stupid ****** who persistently flouted the guidance and the law had not, and did not continue to do so then you would not have found Nick moralising (as you put it) quite so much. The situation we find ourselves in now and will find ourselves in during the coming weeks are not the result of the virus or even government ineptitude, they are the result of people with irresponsible attitudes who think I’m ok, **** everybody else!

  • Jamie says:

Couldn’t disagree with you more, Sharka. Nick_C’s contributions are fact and truth based and I hope they continue, very much unlike your own.

  • Sina says:

Question for Pro amex users: I have a Gold Amex charge card and harrods amex:

1-I’m looking to cancel Gold card, does holding harrods card stop me in the 2 year rule to get sign up bonus?

  • old bob says:

Is that the best you can do? Poor effort, I’ll give you 2/10 for trying, now swim away little fish.

  • Charlieface says:

Can everyone call it quits? Change the subject please. If you don’t like what somebody wrote, move on
