The HfP chat thread – Sunday 3rd January

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Is there any update on when the Marriott 90 day status match offer will be withdrawn?

On the landing page, matches were suspended until 31st Dec, so supposedly the offer is up and running again?

Reason for asking – I have 2 nights booked at The Langley for end of March. I could presumably status match now and have Platinum status for those dates but I’m thinking hotel won’t be open by then.

If I have to postpone my stay [again], would they let me keep my “current” stay for the postponed stay? I’m guessing not, so timing is crucial and don’t want to apply immediately if don’t need to

    • Harry T says:

Don’t do a status challenge until you are absolutely sure you can complete the nights. Marriott show no mercy when it comes to clemency – they won’t extend the status match period or postpone it for you once it’s initiated.

  • James Vickers says:

Has anyone used Collinson RT-PCR testing? Interested to know what the result certificate says, does it say was done by a medical professional?

    • Pete says:

Yes – it has the signature of a doctor and even a stampy-looking thing.

  • DavidC says:

Please can anyone tell me what is the deadline for requesting a FTV for a reward booking with BA?

  • Kevin says:

    Hi guys
I bought a Groupon hotel deal via BA Rewards before Christmas. It was for a hotel stay in Republic of Ireland, which I then booked for Mid-January 2021. Now RoI have locked down hotels for January the hotel have cancelled my booking, and wish me to book further on in the year. Can I get money back from Groupon at all?

As for the Avios points, they haven’t dropped yet, but I was waiting until I actually used the Groupon voucher before enquiring. Anyone any experience of this?

    Cheers

  • James says:

What is the current setup with BA CW? Catering/amenity/blanket etc? Thanks!

    • Tracey says:

Catering hasn’t returned to pre-covid levels, but does at least include a hot meal as part of the main meal on long haul in business.
Amenity kits are available. You get a pillow and blanket in business.

      • James says:

Thanks Tracey! Not 100% sure but I think I read the catering was going back to some sort of normality from mid January time, anyone else able to confirm?

        • The Original Nick says:

19-21st time from what I remember reading

          • Wally1976 says:

Does that apply to CE too?

          • TGLoyalty says:

I believe it was across the board but it was all rumour. Perhaps it could change depending on what happens over the next few days.

    • Rob says:

      Stll a cardboard box.

Which is weird, as I flew both Emirates and SWISS in the last month and both had standard business class catering, served a course at a time. The only difference was that the food arrived covered and my Emirates main wasn’t plated.

      • Rhys says:

Due to return to real crockery in the coming weeks, however. Unless anything has changed.

  • PaulC says:

Any sign of BA further extending 2-4-1 vouchers? Times ticking and not much availability left for class and route would like to book.

    • Tom says:

Can you preserve it using a future travel voucher? I.e. book an avios redemption using your 2-4-1, then cancel and take the FTV..extends the life of the voucher into 2022…?

      • PaulC says:

Thats an idea and could be what others have planned to do, cheers. We have 3 vouchers all due to expire this year so struggling to use them all as we would like to.

        • Tom says:

I’m about to try it myself..not sure how quickly BA issue the FTVs..

          • David says:

Can this be done with the Lloyds voucher ?

          • Tom says:

the answer is a few mins.. I just did it, cancelled and requested the FTV and it arrived minutes later. Have to call up to book but means I can use the 2-4-1 to save 30k Avios on a flight to Italy this summer when it should have expired in May (sadly not the value I would have got for it had my trip to Japan not have been cancelled at Easter…)

  • Tom says:

    No idea about Lloyds.. sorry!

    • David says:

So how exactly does this work with the Amex 241?

You book as a normal 241, then what are you doing?

      • Doug M says:

Cancelling for a FTV which is the 241, Avios and Fees all wrapped into a single voucher.
Is you call Avios they’ll extend the Lloyds voucher to 30th March, well they did for me, and that something like the 3rd extension. Remember Lloyds is a book by, and by late March things could look different.
