Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Saturday 2nd January

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Craig says:

Does anyone have an Igloo Energy referral code, it’s time to switch.

    • Andrew M says:

      https://refer.igloo.energy/andrewm7984

There you go. That should get both of us £50.

    • Jane says:

in case anyone else needs one since it seems to be the season for switching (did mine yesterday !) https://refer.igloo.energy/janed4521

    • Ben says:

Don’t assume a free £50 if the best you can do.

Head over to switch.which.co.uk an do a proper comparison. It is the only site to provide every single company and their pricing. Separate suppliers for gas and electricity is normally cheaper too than dual fuel. For my 2 bed flat, I ended up getting a £270 saving per year against octopus who was the original supplier when I moved in…..

      • Craig says:

I’d already done that and Igloo came up cheapest.

      • The real John says:

Did you compare to the standard tariff or the octopus tracker (variable) tariff?

Also the cheapest supplier between November and April is highly unlikely to be the cheapest supplier between May and October. I use 1000 kWh gas in the warmer 6 months and 10000 kWh in the colder 6 months. The best choice for 2000 kWh per year is never the same as the best choice for 20000 kWh per year.

    • 747_Brat says:

I recently switched to Igloo. They offer lower rates than Bulb & Octopus, and allow Amex top-ups keeping the direct debit to just £1. The cherry on top is that they pay 3% interest on the account credit! 🙂

Their Trustpilot reviews are also very very good.

In case you would like to switch to Igloo, here’s my referral link. We both get £50. Thanks.

  • Liam B says:

Have a flight to Maldives in early Feb, how is the tier system being policed at Heathrow? Do you just have to show something with your address to prove what Tier you are in?

    • Rob says:

You show nothing. BA and the airport are not law enforcement.

Either the police stop you on the way to the airport or they don’t.

Flying itself is not an offence. Leaving home is the offence.

  • Bookwithconfidence says:

Are BA legally within their rights to deny a full refund if the request for the refund was made online rather than by phone?
I booked under their book with confidence agreement but have only been refunded the taxes rather than the full fare.
The flight still operated but I cancelled a few days before. Thanks

    • Rob says:

Book With Confidence does NOT get you a refund for cash. Cancelling means you lose everything except tax so BA is correct.

You should have selected Future Travel Voucher.

    • Mikeact says:

@Bookwithconfidence. Bit of an expensive mistake unfortunately.

  • Tom says:

Looking to book an avios redemption for the summer.. we’re a family of 4 and on one of our flights there are only seats in Euro Traveller. Can we pretend they are Club Europe by booking an extra seat to keep the middle seats free? BA say to call them to do this but I wondered if it is possible to use Avios for the extra seats?

    • Alex says:

I believe so but I do still think you would need to call, unless you input the same name twice for two of the passengers?
I would say however, can you not book and keep an eye open for club? More seats are often released so you could upgrade…finally if it’a only Europe club – is it worth the extra avios and taxes?

      • ChrisC says:

DO NOT try and book this as a fake passenger or cello (other musical instruments are available). It’s been tried and usually ends in failure.

Book it properly by calling BA. You don’t pay APD for the seat for example.

    • Anna says:

Not sure why you would want to pay extra avios, RFS fee plus seat selection to do this on a short haul flight but it is possible to have more than one seat booked on a flight, as long as you make separate bookings. We have got Plan A and Plan B for Easter, both of which use the same domestic connection to LHR, so theoretically we have 2 CE seats each on that flight. I don’t know what would happen if we tried to check for both bookings! I’m assuming at least one trip will be cancelled, if not both.

      • Tom says:

Thanks folks! Just want the extra space in the cabin. After a year of barely seeing another human being the idea of being sandwiched next to one for 3 hours isn’t one I can imagine right now. I don’t think the extra space has any social distancing benefit but psychologically just seems to make the experience more comfortable.

        • Optimus Prime says:

If the flight happens to be overbooked, wouldn’t those ‘empty’ seats be assigned to someone else?

  • FFoxSake says:

Now that the new year Amex Marriott 15 bonus nights have posted to Bonvoy…
    1) is it OK to cancel the card now without the bonus nights being removed?
    2) can you reapply towards the end of 2021 and get another 15 nights?
Thanks everyone here on HfP for continued great advice/tips. My Qantas centenary flights for £1 last year seem so long ago…

  • barnyd says:

Out of interest what is the longest people have waited for their flight booking to be ticketed ?
We made a couple of VA bookings in Nov and were given a ref number as normal but we have never received any email confirmation or ticket numbers. I’ve queried this with Virgin who say ‘it’s still in the queue’ but it seems an awfully long time to me. Every other VA flight booking we have made the ticketing confirmation came within 24 hours. The bookings are not in till Sep so there’s no urgency but this doesn’t seem right to me. I don’t know perhaps I’m worrying over nothing.

  • Jamie says:

Booked a pair of redemption flights Club World to BKK in the Avios 50% sale with a companion voucher. Flights/route now cancelled. If I ask for a voucher what will I get on the voucher? The value of the flights or the cash used and the points used and my 2-4-1 returned? Will I lose the benefit of the 50% sale and am therefore better off calling for a refund? Thanks

    • AJA says:

The FTV is the 2-4-1 voucher, 50% Avios you used and the taxes and fees you paid.

You will have to add Avios when you come to use the FTV unless the flights you choose are equivalent to or less than what you’ve used . Only do the FTV route if your 2-4-1 voucher expires before end of Apr 2022.

Sincw BA cancelled instead of going for refund or the FTV have you seen whether you can move your flights to a future date? You shouldn’t need reward seat availability and you should not have to pay more.

      • Jamie says:

Thanks. I’m not sure if they will reinstate the BKK route, is it possible to change the dates and the destination (Caribbean fr example)?

        • AJA says:

You can change the dates and destination but will have to pay more Avios especially as you paid only 50% Avios. You may also have to pay change fees (not sure if BA are still waiving change fees?). Have you checked whether BA will move your flight to BKK to later in the year? It seems you can still book direct flights on the route – I tried outbound 2 Nov 2021 returning 15 Dec 2021 and it comes up with availability. Bear in mind that you will be limited to ticket validity of 1 year from when booked.

          • Paul B says:

I was in exactly the same position. LHR-BKK, 50% Avios Sale and 241 voucher. Rang up, told refund only option. Put phone down. 2nd time, offered FTV. 3rd time offered flights on Royal Jordanian. 4th time offered FTV. 5th time offered flights on QR on the dates of my choosing, which I accepted. Ideally, I would have liked my origin to become BHX rather than LHR but BA wouldn’t buy that.

          • TGLoyalty says:

I don’t think so BA have cancelled. They should re-route on another carrier.

        • memesweeper says:

You can ask for a reroute on another carrier.

  • idontfly says:

Thanks Jane, used your code, if anyone else wants to switch today:
