Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Thursday 31st December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Asked elsewhere but think better in general post.
Hilton gold – lots of Hilton points I won’t use.
Want to make 2 different booking to different countries at different times for my two sons and their girlfriends.
Anyway they could receive my gold benefits when staying at the properties?
    Thanks in advance

    • Chris Heyes says:

Quite easy to do, done it loads in uk not as sure abroad never tried ?
give son your card (Hilton) amex same name or book it for them, check in online fast check out (drop box leaving)

      • John says:

        Thanks for that.
Unfortunately, never been to a hotel in Dubai that would allow online check in and always been forced to produce passports and matching card at front desk.

    • Anuj says:

Could you make a booking in your name then have your sons name added to it by contacting them ?

  • Peter K says:

    Yes.

  • Doc says:

A bit of advice on half avios redemption booking.
I used my 241/companion voucher during the 50% avios booking sale.
It looks like our trip to South America in March could potentially not go ahead due to COVID. If the flights are cancelled, I am aware I can get a refund or FTV keeping the voucher and the Avios and the tax components.
However if I want to book the same route in 2022, will BA let me book the redemption with the voucher for the half Avios amount or will it reprice to full Avios amount since it is technically out of the sale dates.

    • Anna says:

If you take the FTV you will only be able to use it at face value; you’ll be charged the full avios price of any flight you use it for. From this point of view if dates work for re-ticketing you’re better off trying to move the travel date.

      • Doc says:

Thanks Anna. Re-ticketing was what I was planning to do but the only issue is ideally want to travel in Jan or Feb 2022 which will be more than 12 months after flight booking date, so not sure if BA will let me move that far. If not, will need to have a rethink. Thanks

    • Harry T says:

I doubt BA will let you move flights to 2022, as their current policy is to allow changes to the end of ticket validity in the case of involuntary cancellation (so 365 days from booking date).

  • Paul says:

Just taken advantage of 2 x 250 etihad amex credit. 500 quid for 10 mins work. Thanks hfp.

    • Venturelog says:

Were these purchased today (last day)? Just wondering if pending amounts are valid.

    • James says:

Same. Booked last night and show as pending… not had Anex email saying offer has been redeemed but that’s not unusual. Have you had emails, Paul?

  • Callum says:

Just to add to what Nick said.

Even if there is literally no chance whatsoever that you’d want to set foot in Switzerland next year, if you change the date then you get another chance to hope for a cancellation, allowing you to possibly get a refund in the future.

    • George says:

So if I somehow know which flights are likely to get canceled, I could choose to change to that flight, hope it gets canceled, and if it doesn’t then change again. I just need to find that information somehow.

    Re: BA half Avios redemption

If we reroute our Seoul trip in April (for April or later) via Qatar airway and need to cancel due to COVID restrictions, will this be possible and rebook? What are the terms of the flight when BA is the one rerouting via alternative airline?

    • babyg says:

there are threads on flyertalk that maybe better…

    • r* says:

Have ba said they will reroute via qatar to seoul? I think theyre default reroute to icn is on mas via kul, which would mean the direct flight would become a 26 hour transit. Im gonna be having that battle but decided to leave it til after christmas lol

  • Sharon says:

Hi – I currently hold an additional card on my partner’s BAPP.
I closed my BAPP 30/10/2018 and my Platinum 28/04/2019.
Am I eligible yet for a sign-up bonus if partner refers me for BAPP?

    • TGLoyalty says:

BAAP yes and I believe Platinum 1/5/2021 to be sure.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Tbh you should look at Robs article as you’ll be eligible for Marriott then BAPP then Platinum. Or whatever the highest earning route is.

        • Anna says:

I think having had Platinum until 4/19 will rule out SPG for now. If Sharon wanted to go that route she would need to wait a few more months then apply for SPG first in May 21.

      • Sharon says:

        Thank you @TGLoyalty

    • Anna says:

I think you’ll be ok because you haven’t had an avios-earning card for 24 months (for the BAPP but not for the free card).

  • Sharon says:

    Thank you

    • Anna says:

-Sharon – see above re your Platinum before applying for anything. I think it would rule out a sign up bonus on SPG.
