The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 30th December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    For reference as to what an airline can/should do:

    Wife had a flight tomorrow to China to help her parents. Was China Southern to CAN. China are blocking UK travel so we rang up airline on the 23rd who gave options to postpone or refund. We went refund, it hit the amex on the 25th and amex are processing a credit to bank a/c as we won’t spend that amount for a few months. Surprisingly efficient from the airline

      I have a bad experience of travelling with China Southern on DEL-AKL route via CAN in 2018. They broke my new suitcase, which was less than 6 months old, and refused to pay for it. I escalated the matter and even mailed their Head of Customer Service but they did not budge.

      IIRC the meal service in business was just meh, and I had a tough time communicating with the flight attendants as none of them spoke English!

    • Andrew says:

      That was my experience of BA too on the 3 occasions I had to request a refund over the last year.

    Does anyone know if the Amex International Dollar Card still available as a green card (ie free!) as the gold is $300 and the Plat $595

  • Simon says:

    Igloo £50.00 referrals – can you actually extract the £50.00 once a successful referral has been added to your account? I’m yet to give this a whirl, but wanted to know if I could actually withdraw this £50.00? It’s a less attractive proposition, just from a personal perspective, if it is just a credit on any new Igloo account. TIA.

    • Grant says:

      It goes in to a separate rewards balance which can be applied as credit to your account. In theory credit balance sitting in your account can be withdrawn by BACS but, whilst I haven’t tried, I suspect it will not let you withdraw the full amount if it includes credit from a rewards balance.

        Many thanks for this, Grant.

        Would anyone know if there are any competitively-priced energy suppliers which do offer referrals that can subsequently be withdrawn as cash?

        • Ed says:

          I’ve done it with Octopus. £50 referral reward and you are able to withdraw it to your bank account. They take Amex too and you can reduce your direct debit payment to £1 a month and pay the rest on Amex.

          If you use my referral we both get £50

          @Simon
          Per Martin’s MSE forums, you can withdraw the Igloo referral reward to bank account. Just try and camouflage it with the other account credit, while requesting a refund.

          In case you are looking for an Igloo referral, please feel free to join using my link. We both get £50. Thanks.

          OVO offer JL/ M&S/ Amazon gift vouchers if that helps. Not quite cash.

        @Grant
        Not sure if you read my comment on the daily chat thread sometime ago. But I used your referral link for the Igloo sign-up.
        Thank you. 🙂
