The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 29th December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Because they purport to be an international broadcaster. Sky reported it an hour ago.

Emirates announces premium economy – https://t.co/WpBbPKQ7gi?amp=1

    • Andrew says:

That’s pretty classy looking. Depending on what the meal service is like I might even be tempted to try it for a day flight.

  • MKB says:

Virgin’s WhatsApp service seems to have been downgraded to an automated bot, devoid of human presence. I am trying to do a penalty-free cancellation of a booking where VS have cancelled one of the flights and rebooked the following day, but the bot just directs to an online form to request rebooking.

Anyone know what today’s wait times are on the phones?

    • Algor says:

Whenever you read a book or watch a movie call and place your phone close by on low volume speaker, learned this in corona time and works not bad (in spring my BA calls were on average 3vhours).

As long as you have ‘the time’ to resolve issue its easy.

    • Tom1 says:

Call at 7am. Minimal waiting times ime

    • Rhys says:

Probably just a Christmas pause. If not urgent why not wait until next week?

    • Nick_C says:

I used the text message service on 4/12 to request a points transfer to Hilton. Automated Attendant guided me through 3 options, got a response 54 hours later on 6/12, and the points reached Hilton on 11th.

If automation works, and helps the airlines to deal with non urgent enquiries in these difficult times, then surely that’s a good thing.

    • James Vickers says:

Have to be honest and say virgin helped me loads today on WhatsApp change a booking. Was very convenient so unsure how you had that experience

  • Martha says:

Is there anyway to track your amex referrals and what can you do if you don’t get a referral bonus even know it was clicked through

    • Leigh says:

I contacted Amex last week because I didn’t receive the referral bonus for referring a friend in Nov. I was told that the referred person needs to contact Amex to check the tracking and that it could only be done 90 days after the referred person’s application (the T&Cs say that it takes up to 90 days to credit referral bonus).

      • Harrier25 says:

Nonsense. I received my referral bonus within 48 hours of referring my wife at the start of November. It amazes me how these so called customer service advisers repeatedly get away with spouting constant drivel.

        • Aston100 says:

They honestly do talk so much BS lately. I had the same nonsense spouted at me too.

    • james says:

It could be your referee has done something during the click through process that has lost the link back to your referral. I’ve found that out in the past. You need to be very careful.

If there’s no link then unlucky.

    • Chris Heyes says:

Martha, done it myself with quite a few referral just one didn’t go through correctly (I Clicked through myself) after a bit off hmmin and haaain customer services did it manually
(i had the email i’d sent for the referral which helped they at first said he hadn’t gone through correctly, but when i told them i was there and i went through for him they admitted because i did a lot it was June just gone, it might have been missed by there system)

Is it possible to make prepayments to halifax mortgages online by debit card?

    • babyg says:

      i haven’t found a way, i use telephone banking… takes less than 5mins and no humans involved…

    • Genghis says:

Only bank transfer online. By phone can be debit card.

  • Marvel says:

Anyone want to share a bulb referral link?

  • Tom1 says:

Etihad Amex offer 250 off 500…

I saw a discussion here a few days ago about how to book something now that can be used as ftv or similar, but can’t find it now.

Any hints and tips how to claim the offer?

In return – my tip on the Hilton and Marriott Amex credit offers is check the ones with golf courses – They will sell golf vouchers/gift cards.

    • Andrew says:

Pretty straight forward – book a flight you don’t intend to take, then cancel it for a FTV.

      • Saiz says:

However, if you take the Etihad Credit voucher you need to travel (not book) by 31st October. Just read the terms on their website. They are quite clear.

  • r* says:

Has anyone had any success making a future booking charged immidiately for the £400 Marriott offer? If so, which hotels?

When Ive tried to make a booking so far they keep forwarding the call to marriott central bookings which presumably wont trigger the offer.

    • G says:

I have with W London. Made a prepaid booking online and waited a week but nothing was charged so called up the hotel and asked for it to be charged. Waited another few days and it was still not charged so ended up emailing and it was charged within a few hours as ‘W London Leicester Square’.

      • TGLoyalty says:

whatever dot whenever at whotels dot com

In case anyone else wants to try the same @ W London.

    • Dan says:

Yes someone had done it Grosvenor House, I am currently trying with the London Edition for March, although it’s only security Manning the desk, he’s given me an email address for them now.

      • Harry T says:

London EDITION and W are very responsive and helpful via email – I’m sure either would be happy to charge someone in advance!

        • Dan says:

Thanks. Got a nice email quickly from London Edition, but there’s no one there able to process a payment so will be changing to Grosvenor tomorrow I think!

    • MarkH says:

      Grosvenor House worked fine
