The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 23rd December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Processed a transaction on curve metal this afternoon with hmrc and was charged 0.1% as a credit card fee fee by hmrc. Anyone else experienced this?

    • EwanG says:

      This explains https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/07/02/hmrc-changes-its-rules-for-payment-by-business-debit-card/
You could ask Curve to change your business card to a personal one (requires a new card to be issued).

      • Jonathan says:

This is a real ball ache when I did it. I was resent a commercial card due to an automated error. So then got sent a personal one but they ran out of red card and had to make do with blue. Daily limit was cut from £9k to £2k, complained and got £9k reinstated. Then someone re-proceeded the personal card and now have rose gold. £4.5k daily limit and unable to get it increased. Plus the details on the back of my card don’t work and don’t match what’s in the app – card number is the same but expiry and cvv codes are different. 3 weeks and still waiting for a response from support. Total shambles but I’ve had 5 metal cards this year from them for one reason or another.

I see that the law firm PGMBM are looking to get compensation from BA for the 2018 Data Breach and are inviting claimants to sign up to some form of class action. Does anyone have knowledge / views of this firm or the action?

    • Rob says:

We did an article at the start of last year. We were originally looking at working with one of the firms, but as the case is basically there to get the lawyers rich (they take most of the money, not you) and with BA making thousands of staff redundant due to lack of income, it didn’t seem like something we would want to be attached to.

    • mark2 says:

Have you got provable losses to claim for?

      • Alan H says:

No losses at all but just saw the advert in a national newspaper this morning

      • Rob says:

        Doesn’t matter, in this case.

        • KBuffett says:

Where does the money from the fine go?

          • Rob says:

Split between everyone who signs up for the case (assuming their data was caught up in the breach) and the lawyers. Could be a few hundred quid but no-one really knows as this is one of the first cases since UK law was changed to allow these kind of class action lawsuits.

          • KBuffett says:

I’m referring to the ICO fine

          • Rob says:

It was pan-European so got split across EU member states.

          • ChrisC says:

The fine the ICO fine levied under GDPR goes to the government(s) of the counties involved and not to any individual. As the country with the most individuals involved the UK would get the bulk of it.

Any compensation to individuals is a separate court case. But if they win it likely won’t be much.

  • John says:

Been looking for a while to get my return flight : a reward first ticket Miami to LHR.
No first at all have been available for Nov 21 and beginning of Dec.
    Anyone know why?
Masses of availability before these months.

  • Anna says:

Just noticed my HH points landed yesterday so hopefully that means the current issue has been resolved!

  • aDifferentSimon says:

Chances of BA reopening flights to helsinki in Dec2021?
    Guesses please!

    • Number9 says:

Could be yes or could be no would be my guess.

    • J says:

Finnair have sold some slots and cut services so possible BA reinstate their service? Not much competition from LCC either, Ryanair/easyJet don’t fly there – I think Norwegian used to…

  • S says:

Does anyone know what the current daily/weekly/monthly IHG limits are with Curve? Thanks
