Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 21st December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I know some people outside the London area have been looking for Covid Test facilities. Just stumbled over this one which may be of interest https://biograddiagnostics.squarespace.com/

  • Lady London says:

PS If you deleted it make sure you delete my comment about Kent as well.

  • Aston100 says:

I believe there was an Islamaphobic comment in the replies. Perhaps it was the removal of that that led to the whole trail being deleted.

    • Lady London says:

was it islamophobic? I couldnt catch the meaning of it, but I let it rest.

I’m just waiting for Rhys or someone to confirm.
Especially as when I realised tongue in cheek humour not being understood on a UK forum any more is a risk, I put an explanatory reply. So will be nice to know what happened

  • Andrew says:

Your post became inappropriate when you started making jokes about migrants. Learn where to draw the line.

    • Andrew says:

Still not an appropriate discussion for a travel points website

    • Jake says:

Pretending to have multiple cats to defraud Tesco is inappropriate, but apparently that was fair game oh here. Funny how what is inappropriate goes out the window provided there’s a few points up for grabs.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Unless someone made a claim against their nonexistent cat it’s not fraud.

The terms were clear take out new policy pay your premium for x months and get points. However, crucially it was on topic for a points blog.

Calling migrant illegals on the other hand isn’t.

        • Jake says:

Ok, false representation if you prefer. ‘However crucially it was on topic for a points blog’, oh that’s ok then. There’s a million posts here that aren’t deleted which have absolutely nothing to do with points or travel, so let’s not pretend that’s the reason.

        • Jake says:

As for being on topic it does say at the top of the page ‘The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind’.

        • TGLoyalty says:

@Jake i have only a couple thing to say on the subject “If you have nothing nice to say say nothing at all.” And “Don’t be a dick”

I think it’s pretty clear this site is about maximising value related to travel not for bigoted views on migrants take it to the DM website.

@Anna was referring to other replies

        • Jake says:

“Dont be a dick”, wasn’t that basically the Government’s advice about travelling. The interesting thing is it’s apparently not ok to insult others, but fine to risk giving them a nasty virus because we feel like a holiday. Interesting times.

        • Mike says:

          Migrants? Refugees? Asylum seekers?

Illegal immigrants applies in one of these cases

        • RussellH says:

          > Migrants? Refugees? Asylum seekers?
          > Illegal immigrants applies in one of these cases.

Eh? None of these are necessarily illegal immigrants, though some of them /may/ be.
Only a court can decide on legality or illegality. Not you, not me.

        • Mike says:

A Court? Really? That’s who decides who is lawful in the UK. For every case it goes to Court?

Why not replace UKBA with Judges sat at Heathrow then? Priti can just get the judiciary busy.

      • Rebecca says:

        +1

    • Lady London says:

I actually said people fleeing persecution and the comment was more about decisions apparently being made by the French. I did not use the word migrants as several countries have turned that into a pejorative word.

  • Reney says:

Three fraud transaction just went through my curve card within minutes whilst I was on a conference call. I have blocked my curve card, messaged them, called Teaco who was the backing card to tell them about it. Anything else I should do, l? And does anyone have experience with how fast Curve acts? I note quite a lot of recent complaints about slow CS. The last time I used my curve card in a shop was at Oxfam, if case anyone wondered.

  • Anna says:

Huh? I was talking about the recent debate about the rights to fishing in EU and UK waters, nothing to do with human migration!

    • Anna says:

I hadn’t even seen any of the replies. But for what it’s worth I’ve never taken out a Tesco insurance policy!

      • Anna says:

I stand corrected, I did see a reply, from Rob about freight being allowed across the channel.

  • Anna says:

Boris giving another press conference at 5 pm apparently, what did he forget to mention on Saturday?!!

    • TGLoyalty says:

Its either. It’s not so bad after all. Everyone relax. Or a new national lockdown starts December 26th.

      • Anna says:

I’m going with, “Sorry peeps, I forgot that now I’ve created Tier 4 for the south, we’ll need a new Tier 5 for Lancashire and Greater Manchester.”

    • Andrew says:

Remember they used to do these conferences daily for the first few months of the pandemic – there won’t be any big announcements, it will just be a current state of play update on the Dover situation, tell people not to panic buy at the supermarkets and to take a grilling from the press.

      • Nick says:

Watching now… Bozo said it’s already clear that other regions will need stricter restrictions. So why don’t they just introduce them now, before it all goes wrong again?!

  • Rhys says:

The whole chain was getting messy and derailed. As usual, not all comments were a problem but the way Wordpress nests comments means we can’t always remove just one.

‘Tongue in cheek’ also doesn’t always translate very well online.
