Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 21st December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I stayed in a Hilton Day room last week, checked out and moved to another Hilton for that night.
Hilton now tell me I cannot earn elite night credits for both stays due to something called ‘overlock night restriction’. Is this correct? (I can’t find anything in T&Cs)

    • Blenz101 says:

Sounds right. Hilton allows you to earn points on up to 4 booked rooms per day but you can only ever earn one elite night credit per night.

Can’t really argue with their logic / protection this provides the programme from abuse of people checking into multiple hotels a day in cheaper parts of the world.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Unfortunately it’s correct. You can earn “nights” at more than one hotel in each night.

So day use today would give you nights for 21st. You can’t then get nights for another stay on the 21st.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Just to add it would work if it was the other way round. Over night followed by a day rate.

I’m gong shopping in Waitrose tomorrow taking my LIDL reusable carrier bag to ensure social distancing

Oh to reminisce of not too long ago…. Lego, printer cartridges, HfP stalwarts giving really good advice….. going from Hilton silver to Diamond for £120 of Accor trips and a Best Western stay. Ibis business, Business traveller for GHA Platinum Talking of Accor…. Happy Mondays….. great stays for buttons and perks from being Accor Gold (Ibis business card) Happier days with a smaller, civil good mannered membership. Troll, What is that? Nastiness? Slagging off Rob? You best get your coat and leave my friend before you are ejected! Go to another site for all of that nonsense…. if you please. Sense of community? it is still here but look a bit harder.

    • Blenz101 says:

That is just what 2020 has handed the world. Travel will return and companies will run promotions when it is responsible to do so.

Meanwhile we have had a fair summary of how different programs are handling extensions, delay and cancellation guidance, fleet changes and regular inspiration of unusual hotels/destinations.

I think that is a fair exchange for the low levels of promotions / adverting run. What’s the alternative? Furlough and go dark until all this is over and Accor happy Mondays returns in late 2021?

And the cabbages, such simple, times, all about collecting avios etc…

I had to check I hadn’t written this. Ah, the good old days 😁

“Virgin Atlantic will require all travellers from London to the United States to present evidence of a negative Covid-19 test before departure under a new pre-departure screening from 24 December, a spokesman said on Monday.”

This is from the Guardian this evening.

    • Blenz101 says:

Looks like a proactive move from Virgin for US citizens travelling from the U.K.

NYC was leading the calls for this.

      • Harry T says:

Seems Delta is doing it too, which makes sense given their joint venture with VS.

  • Olly says:

As Bobby McFerrin once said……. “In every life we have some trouble
But when you worry you make it double
    Don’t worry, be happy
    Don’t worry, be happy now”.
I’m hoping the positivity will help ….. it will also reveal.

  • Blenz101 says:

What would be helpful is to perhaps have a weekly page for discussions around the creative use of credit card and FinTech products.

The clique nature and nudge nudge code names of the same daily rehash should be separated.

As for the rest, there seems to be pretty much free speech. Rather like an online version of a talk radio station. Rob/Rhys have been clear they will remove and take action against anyone they think crosses a line.

Seems like a good balance to me.

    • Rob says:

That would work well, given that (as there is no news site for the credit card industry in the UK), all the card execs read us.
