Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Friday 18th December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does anyone have any experience/ thoughts on a cancellation & rebooking where one of the passengers is an infant who will be over 2 after the rebooking? Are we still legally entitled to any date of our choosing or are we limited by her birthday?

We have had a cancellation for a domestic flight in Feb, and depending on the tiers may not be able to go anyway. At the moment we’ve been moved to an adjacent flight, but I wonder whether we would be legally within our rights to request a rebooking to later in the year, as it means our daughter will go from an infant ticket to a full seat? Or will we have to pay for hers but ours can be moved?
It was booked in the 50% sale hence I don’t want to refund & rebook our seats even if we have to pay for a new ticket for her.

    • Charlieface says:

That’s a good one. Don’t think it’s specified in the regulations per se, but there is no indication there that you should pay extra, so if you are in your legal EC261 rights yuo should be ok.

All these people wanting to be rebooked to Australia….

I was wondering what happens if BA cancels a flight to somewhere you can’t enter at the moment (such as Australia), and you get them to rebook you on say CX or QR,

    – if the other airline cancels the flight (which might happen 18 months after your original booking), should BA refund what you originally paid? What if you want to be rebooked again, should BA or the other airline do it?

    – if the new flight operates but you still aren’t allowed to enter the destination, have you just lost the ticket value if the new airline doesn’t have a voucher policy?

I don’t expect Australia to let tourists in until 2022 and there may still be a quarantine period even if vaccinated. (As a citizen, I won’t be going until there is no quarantine period.)

    • Charlieface says:

      1a. I think BA
1b. I think BA, although the operating airline would prob agree to do it
      2. Correct

Note: if you have a further delay or downgrade then a second lot of compo could be applicable

RBS banking switch loot – has anyone else been waiting roughly 7 weeks without so much as a groat landing in their account?

    • Andrew says:

Have you’ve ticked all the boxes with DD transfers, use of debit cards and salaries credited?

      • Simon Abrahams says:

Thanks, Andrew. Well, I thought I had all bases covered:

        • 2 x DDs set up
        • Logged into the mobile app once per month
        • £1,500.00 has been paid in (and a further £1,250.00 a month later)
        • I applied before Nov 19th

The three above criteria were in the screengrabs of the offer requirements when I did the switch. I can’t see any mention of salary or debit cards? What I am missing, do you think?

    • Connor says:

You have to wait until mid-January if I recall

    • Louise K says:

      I was told 12 weeks.

  • Anthony says:

I realised far too late in shop small this year that the number of retailers hasn’t actually changed but the default option being popular rather than distance just limits the number of visible shops. Looks like it might be a mad dash this weekend to make the most of it.

    • Nick_C says:

Some retailers are definitely excluded this time. My local farm shop and the village petrol station were both in SS in the summer. This time, they are not on the map and the owners didn’t know it was happening again. Test transactions over a week ago have not produced a credit.

Anyone else received their Harrods gift box for being a harrods cardholder?! It’s these little things that I love about harrods! 😊

    • KBuffett says:

You can get free gift boxes every time you shop in store, need to go to the gift wrapping desk on lower ground floor (for black tier card holders)

      • Sina says:

Not the box, sorry meant gift box with gifts 😅

        • KBuffett says:

Now I’m envious! But considering I have 4 AmEx cards as primary cardholder, I don’t want to rock the boat my applying for another!

    • George K says:

Yup. Hamper came today. Haven’t opened it yet, but looks substantial!

  • Sina says:

Amex Gold to Platinum upgrade bonus – Just passed the 3 month rule and contacted amex as points didn’t credit automatically, the agent initially said no but then said she will call me back, 3 hours later called to say points credited! I got 20k for upgrade from green to plat, 30k retention offer, downgraded to gold and upgraded again to Platinum when invited again! 70K MR points in total in 2020! Plus 2x £100 Waitrose offer, 1x £100 Harrods offer, 1x £400 Marriott offer and a lot of shop small! 2020 was not a good year except when it comes to Amex plat! Doubt we’ll ever see something like this again

  • Travel Strong says:

Datapoint: Requested points transfer from Virgin to Hilton 4 days ago via Whatsapp – and they arrived today! Was prepared for a 30 day wait.

(Even after the transfer I have more Virgin miles than I’ll use next year, and more miles coming in every month – so I had no qualms about converting some to hilton!)

    • TGLoyalty says:

I think they say allow up to 30 days because they batch process. Sometimes you get in just before the cut off 🙂

  • Also says:

Did anyone get a delivery from Easyjet via that Easyjet / Deliveroo thing?

    • Rhys says:

Of course not, it was a massive PR stunt! They probably did a couple of houses, got the video footage they needed and stopped. Let’s be real – it isn’t exactly practical…
