The HfP chat thread – Thursday 17th December

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Is the Ajman Saray (Luxury Collection) treated as part of Dubai for tourist purposes?

I know that some of the UAE is off limits but Dubai is OK. The Ajman LC is my preferred stay for a trip in January, but it’s not downtown Dubai or Jumeirah.

    • NC says:

It’s not Dubai (as Ajman is a separate emirate) but I don’t believe there are any special entry requirements when travelling from Dubai to Ajman. I’m fairly sure we drove straight through Ajman on our way to Ras Al Khaimah a few weeks ago.

      • Rob says:

I believe it’s all OK except AUH. I am popping in to Ras on Monday and not expecting issues.

        • blenz101 says:

Confirmed. For information AUH is the only Emirate with land border restrictions. To cross from Dubai you need either a DPI or PCR test, these can be taken at the border if you don’t have one in advance at a nominal cost (50AED for the DPI, although if you fail it you will require a full PCR). This can add upto a couple of hours to your journey at peak times.

The land border is due to be removed on the 24th December and the UAE will once again be the UNITED Arab Emirates.

    • Pangolin says:

Thanks for all the replies 🙂

  • TGLoyalty says:

Since they said they would do it today. I’d say it’s too early worry about it tomorrow

  • Scott says:

Does anyone know if I book a SLH property via the Hyatt website on a prepaid rate, whether this will trigger the Amex SLH offer?

    • TGLoyalty says:

The property will need to charge before the end date. You may need to chase the property and ask them to charge.

    • southlondonphil says:

No. Very clearly says in the terms “book direct at slh.com” (You could easily have looked this up in the saved SLH offer on your own Amex account, quite frankly)

      • southlondonphil says:

Also, “checkout spend only” showing clear as day in the terms so don’t expect pre-pay to work (it might, but shouldn’t)

        • TGLoyalty says:

It will work no matter how you book SLH.com nor Hyatt process the payment the hotel does. As long as it’s charged to your card by the end date by the hotel you’ll get the credit.

          It is that simple.

      • Rob says:

But in reality it should still work for pay on departure. Goes through the same card machine ….

  • Mike says:

Probably long shot and answer is no but does the Amex Bonvoy 15 nights count towards the status match?

  • The Lord says:

Rob you mentioned a covid test you had scheduled for central London this week. Did it all go ok? Would you recommend?

  • Antony D'Emanuele says:

I am trying to find flights for November/December 2021 to Quito from Madrid with Iberia and I am not finding any flights? I would have thought they would have been scheduling on the basis that travel is in recovery thus surprised nothing is coming up?

    • Rhys says:

If it’s a marginal route they may have cancelled it further, like BA has done with some routes.

      • xcalx says:

IB has not released the winter schedule as yet. No flights are bookable from October 30th 2021. I am waiting for MIA and SJU flights to show. It’s late this year I usualy have my November flights booked by now.

  • Antony D'Emanuele says:

Great news, not sure I have seen this covered – British Airways to resume Manchester-Gatwick link (https://www.businesstraveller.com/business-travel/2020/12/15/british-airways-to-resume-manchester-gatwick-link/)

    • Chris Heyes says:

Antony D’Emanuele Thanks, no not been covered yet !
But great news this was a route we regular used to get from Blackburn to Bognor years ago (Manchester to Gatwick)
Used to cost us £10 each, but included a hot meal great value, time we’d had meal was time for landing (was more flights then though)
We was traveling up/down regularly from house to flat
BA was very special then looked after us included drinks as well.
No idea how they could do it for £10, was sad when they stopped the flight

      • Chris Heyes says:

Anna, Read above post by Antony D’Emanuele !

        • Anna says:

Yes – cautiously optimistic! And depends what routes they will be running from Gatwick in future. Might be good news for family going to and from Bermuda if it continues in the long term.

  • DM says:

If anyone is passing through Heathrow today and can comment on the situation regarding the strikes it would be appreciated (as heading there tomorrow).
