The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 15th December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

easyJet has cancelled a flight in March and told me I have 3 options: choose another easyJet flight (but there aren’t any), take a voucher, or ask for a refund.

Am I right in thinking actually they’re incorrect and there is a far preferable 4th option which is to request an equivalent flight from another airline? The route is Liverpool to Madrid, if that helps.

    • Kiln says:

      Take the freaking refund.

    • Anna says:

Yes you are entitled to re-routing under EU261, though you might struggle to find another carrier operating that route directly (departing MAN on Iberia might be more likely). I don’t know how simple it is to get easyJet to co-operate with this; they cancelled our MAN-VIE in Feb but there were no other direct flights and quarantine would have been an issue so I’ve asked for a refund (supposedly taking about 6 weeks at the moment).

    • Harry T says:

You’re entitled to a reroute on another airline but good luck getting them to do it without legal action. Also, Madrid is basically a covid apocalypse and likely won’t be better by March. Of course, you may have essential reasons to travel.

    • Lady London says:

Yes they still have a duty of care to get you on somebody else,’s flight(s) on that day or very near, from your origin to your destination at no extra cost. If an ovrrnihht is needed before available flight also accomm and meals.
Ask them to provide this – but suspect they will illegally deny and you’re likely to end up having to MCOL. Find flight options before you call. Perhaps they will be able to fly you via somewhere instead of direct but still their own flights. You have to consider this if they offer but can reject if unreasonable impact on your trip.

You can also choose to reroute to a later date convenient to you.

If you paid by credit card do Section 75 claim for cost (evrn if higher) of replacement ticket if there is a suitable flight on someone else if Easyjet denies.

please post what you go for and how it turns out.

I’ll probably just get a refund to be honest, I don’t want to travel. However I was amused and irritated by the way easyJet presented the options as if they were correct and comprehensive.

Has anyone thought about Chile? I saw they have reopened as long as you have a PCR test from 72 hours before. I would never go to the trouble of doing it for the likes of Spain, but Chile would be compelling – as long as I could visit Machu Picchu whilst I was there.

    • Anna says:

Macchu Picchu is in Peru, which might have different requirements, but it would be an awesome trip!

      • Jack says:

        How embarrassing for me SMH!

        • Blindman says:

Plenty to see in Chile though.

It looks like it. I have a cabin crew friend for BA who was disappointed by it but I think it’s hard for them to judge on 2 or 3 days. Prices are around £550 on KLM in January and I have some vouchers to use…

    • Michael C says:

Jack, I think the cabin crew reaction might be based more on Santiago which (for me) is simply “pleasant”. However, almost every single thing outside the city is breathtaking.

    • Kevin C says:

Atacama Desert is incredible. And you could go south this time of year. Easter Island is part of Chile and wonderful. But that is another five hour flight and they might have their own restrictions.

    • Rich says:

I looked at chile tonight along with other destinations for end of jan/early feb. Having had fond memories of travelling round chile during my backpacker days, I would certainly go back. However, having looked at on tripadvisor forum, it doesn’t sound very appealing at the minute with the all the restrictions. Dubai looks favourite at the minute.

    • Amar says:

Booked Chile & Peru in June 2021, but the return leg from Peru was cancelled today – on google flights, it looks like they cancelled the entire flight schedule (atleast for June to Peru)

  • TomD says:

Just realized the Krisfyler 15% bonus ends 27th December…and HSBC says it may take up to 14 days to convert. Is this always the case? Worth risking it…?

  • Tony says:

Good luck with the delivery – cant get a courier anytime before Jan now. I waited too long.

Other tip – fake ( second ) e mail address to register ? and then self refer ?

  • FloriGuy says:

Does anyone know how long it takes for a Marriott Status match to come through? I was hoping to get it through before Xmas

    • Tarmohamed says:

A few days, under a week for them to give me a status match for 90 days to platinum elite using Hilton gold via amex plat.

      • JohnT says:

Mine took 2 days so arrived Tue. First stay tonight (wed) and upgraded room + £7.50 f&b credit. Welcome back rate already includes breakfast. 1 down 14 to go.

  • Alan says:

Germany has banned UK flights from midnight tonight.
