The HfP chat thread – Monday 14th December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Hilton gifting status email arrived.

  • AJA says:

People over on FT are reporting that BA has emailed them to say their Amex 2-4-1 vouchers are being extended again by a further 6 months. I haven’t received the email but I just logged into BAEC and my voucher which was issued on 25 Sep 2019 now shows as “reissued” and has an expiry date of 25 Mar 2022 which is a 6 month extension

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Neither mine nor my wife’s has been extended a second time.

They could be in the process of doing it?

  • Andrew says:

Got an email from Amex (not BA) today stating the following:

We’ve applied a six-month extension to the Companion Vouchers that you have in your British Airways Executive Club Account, which expire before the 31 March 2021. If you haven’t yet earned your Companion Voucher, but do so before 31 March 2021, it will automatically be extended and will now be valid for 30 months, so you’ll now have more chance to enjoy them.

    • Sandra says:

+1, came from Amex too about half an hour ago

    • AJA says:

Further to my comment above I may have misread that it came from BA as I have just received the email directly from Amex. I don’t have any vouchers expiring before 31 March 2021 but am currently just over £3k away from earning another one and think that I will be able to do that and will take advantage of the 30 month validity.

    • Benilyn says:

Nothing here yet ☹️ mine was extended once so far and I don’t have a BAPP anymore if that makes a difference

      • Benilyn says:

Wait mine expires Jun 21 so maybe that’s why it’s not getting the extension

  • Doug M says:

A few people have mentioned IHG free night extension beyond year end. Any actual info on this. Someone mentioned a tweet which I couldn’t find.

    • rk says:

Hi Doug, I have read about this on a few FF sites, but nothing official, I am trying to leave using a reward night up until the last minute in case anything official arrives from IHG… but each to their own.

  • FloriGuy says:

    Marriott points.

    1. I am trying to book a redemption on the basis I will have the points later. Marriott is supposed to allow you do this. When I try to do this I get the message “You’ve purchased the maximum points for the year, but you have other options. View other rates to book your stay.”.

I have never actually bought points from Marriott. Although I have redemption refunds. Does this count towards my limit?

    2. Similarly, it looks like I will need to purchase some points as a top-up with the 50% bonus. Will whatever technical glitch this is stop me from purchasing points?

    Thanks

    • TGLoyalty says:

Is the stay in the next 30 days? I think Marriott tries to buy the points for you if it’s that close.

Redemption refunds shouldn’t affect you buying limit but believe it does if you’ve had from friends if I remember the t&c’s properly.

You don’t say how many points you are short as the limit is pretty low.

Also points advance doesn’t lock in the rate so if it changes after today (it probably will) you’ll pay whatever the rate is when you have the points.

When buying points I found the base points were instant but the bonus landed a few days earlier.

    • Harry T says:

TG is right, your stay is likely in the next 30 days so you can’t use points advance. Happened to me a few months ago!

  • KBuffett says:

Do Marriott Work From Hotel rates get awards points and stays?

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Points yes.

Marriott don’t do stays and you only get nights if the stay is booked for overnight so not on day rates.

  • Lady London says:

So I’m not clear. Those of you who have been in Tier 3 please advise !

Are you still allowed to go out for food shopping/other shopping/medical/work/hairdressee/beauty treatment in Tier 3 ?

    Is there a Tier 4?

Does anyone know website link so I can keep track of Berks./Herts?

    • AndyGWP says:

BBC have a page that you put your postcode in (Google something like: bbc Covid postcode)

From what I gather, Tier 3 takes a bit swipe at hospitality, but that’s about it 🤷🏼‍♂️

      Beauty etc remain open

    • TGLoyalty says:

If you google “gov.uk tier check” you’ll get the postcode checker.

      No Tier 4 in England.

Are you still allowed to go out for food – yes but takeaway only no dine indoors or outdoors at all.
      shopping/other – yes
      shopping/medical/work/hairdressee/beauty treatment – yes

Hotels in T3 areas have to close except for a few exemptions (work, care, escape harm etc)

    • Anna says:

The only legal requirement for individuals in Tier 3 is that any mixing outside your own household has to be done with no more than 5 other people and must be outdoors in a public place.

For everything else the onus is on businesses, e,g, pubs have to close.

    • Anna says:

And if you so much as express a wish to one day visit another Tier area you will invoke the wrath of the virtue signallers …

    • Lady London says:

      Thanks all

    • Nic says:

Here’s the whole list, LL. (If the spam checker doesn’t hold the message up…)

  • Darren says:

Has Rob commented on the PCR test centre for his Dubai trip?

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Test was today, so assuming result tomorrow Id assume not yet, but a few of us waiting!

      • Aristeides says:

Have just come through Dubai T3 from UK (BA). They did not ask for any proof of test result at any point.

    • Rob says:

Turned up, did the test. That’s it so far!
