Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 9th December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Trump Turnberry closed until 5th Feb 2021.

  • The Original Nick says:

Looks like anyone with a Virgin CC now have to download the Virgin app as online services won’t be around from January. The app is apparently a load of rubbish. I don’t do no banking on my phone so it looks like I’ll be asking for a statement and then calling to pay every month.

    • Jonathan says:

The App is fine, much more convenient than the website & I’m not aware of any functionality that’s unavailable on it vs website.

      • Youllnever says:

Agree with Nick. Their app is one of the worse I’ve used. Every time it forces me to update the app, I have to call them up to reset my login so I can re-register on the app, because for some reason it suddenly says my password is incorrect. General consensus based on the app’s rating seems to agree that the app is poorly built, to put it nicely.

      • Alex says:

No access to messages in the app, not possible to see MCC codes. These are two bits important for me.

    • MKB says:

I have a vision of the future, at a time when we have literally thousands of apps on our phones, that some bright spark says: wouldn’t it be nice and simple, if, instead of having to have different pieces of software for every company on your device, that regularly need to be updated, and which consume space; if, instead of that, we design a single common interface that works for all companies. Wouldn’t that be handy and snazzy. What shall we call it? How about a web browser?

What time of the day do IHG release the next reward date able to be searched? Is it US midnight?

  • Simon says:

TAP Gold status • I had bought this status off a fellow HFPer, but sadly it was revoked (understandably, the person gifting it to me — in exchange for a token payment from me — had had their Gold status in turn gifted to them and, per the TAP rules, they shouldn’t have been able to gift Gold status to me).

Anyway, I just wondered if anyone who *paid* for TAP Gold — rather than had it gifted to them — and still had the option of gifting Gold to somebody else might be inclined to come to some financial arrangement with me for this status? If so, please feel free to email me: vikingsfanuk AT hotmail DOT com

    Many thanks in advance! 🙂

Anyone have a link to the HSBC Premier offer for Deliveroo and Spotify? When I Google it keeps showing me the offer but for HSBC UAE and can’t seem to find it on the home page for HSBC Premier U.K.

  • David D says:

For everyone with HSBC Premier, the Aviva provided travel insurance has received some significant updates today which I received an email about this afternoon. Similar to other branded products in the HSBC family such as M&S, the cover is changing to remove “cover relating to cancellation and/or coming home early if the reason for this is caused by a major incident (other than a terrorist attack within 50 miles of your accommodation) or the area in which you are staying is affected by pandemic or epidemic influenza” amongst a number of other changes.

There are a couple of positives, however the and the removal of cover when travelling against FCDO advice are the two major changes and both downgrades in cover.

    • Jimbob says:

Odd they only mention influenza. Technically COVID19 should still be covered, given it’s a coronovirus and not influenza 🤷

      • Lady London says:

I think they forgot to insert a comma after pandemic. Let’s not remind them

        • TGLoyalty says:

Influenza is considered an epidemic in some place or another in many countries most winters and a pandemic is an epidemic that effects the whole country or globe so perhaps not.

          • David D says:

Influenza epidemic suggests the relevant actuary has looked at a data set of recent global health issues and saw Sars and Swine Flu and thought this was the easiest wording via the legal department. Basic, but relevant. Surprised Ebola outbreaks were not added as specified instances though.

Hi guys, some advice needed re. BA Rewards Avios points, buying via BA Rewards App. I’m after an iPad. Happy to have any as its just for my father to do emails and read the news but I’m confused re. 9 Avios/£ and which ones are excluded, included etc. Advice??

    • dezbez says:

Hi- it is really confusing, agreed. I was looking the other day and came to the conclusion that the Pro & Mini would be eligible. At least that’s my interpretation, but I certainly wouldn’t put my house on it.

    • TGLoyalty says:

50% chance they’ll be clawed back anyway.

In my experience it’s the newer models which are excluded and they should be listed in the terms on the actual website.

  • 747_Brat says:

Great news for Miles & More FF members:

M&M just informed members via email that no changes as initially announced will be forthcoming in 2022 and hasn’t named any future date of possible implementation of this change.

    • 747_Brat says:

The following changes were originally announced last year:

      (1) A points based currency system will replace the current status miles measurement
      (2) Flights flown on LH Group airlines will apparently earn more of these points
      (3) Lifetime Frequent Traveler & Senator Status will become an official perk of the program
      (4) Period of status validity will be downgraded from two years to one year only
      (5) Status Stars will be abolished as they apparently confused the customers

    • Mike says:

It’s not good news if you would qualify for HON on the new rules. It got a whole lot easier.
