Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 9th December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone tried paying HMRC with Curve recently, I am now getting the error not accepting this card type, I have the personal debit version…

    • Dr C says:

If Curve stops working for HMRC then the metal card is worthless

      • Crafty says:

I am now in this place – have been entirely unable to use the card, for neither HMRC nor NS&I, since trading business for personal. Curve don’t understand why it’s being declined and have asked me what the error messages are – they say at their end they see the transactions going through and then later being reversed.

I’m going to see out the minimum 6 months paying Amex and then cancel the Metal subscription.

        • Dr C says:

Sounds like yours is an actual decline where mine was an error on the HMRC website about not accepting the card type, seemed to go through after re logging in though.

Worth noting if you recently got given a new card the old one stops working once activated.

        • johnny_c-l says:

In the same situation as Crafty, metal card has become nearly unusable, very few combinations that will work now I’ve gone onto personal. My months is up in Jan so will call it a day then.

    • Holam says:

yes, paid corp tax this morning ok. Have metal personal

      • Dr C says:

Thanks, it seems to work now, I think the HMRC website is not reliable

  • Nick says:

Ernie is declining my Curve payments, anyone else the same?

  • David says:

BA have cancelled my Avios flights to Punta Cana – whilst I know I can rebook can I rebook to an alternative destination even if there isn’t avios bookings available …..and if so how far from the original destination ?

    • roberto says:

      300 miles..

      • David says:

Within 300 miles of the destination or within 300 miles of the distance – so no chance of changing it to Maldives or Seychelles !

    • Lady London says:

if they cancelled yr flight you can be booked any flight & date – even much later – same for rest of flights on your ticket even if those not cancelled.
Only needsto be any seats available in same cabin class – even if only cash seats are avaiabl

If they wont play ball as legally required then they are supposed to book you free of charge on other carrier(s) to get you by any ressonable route from your departure airport to your destination. Although you may end up having to MCOL them as they don’t like honouring that part of the law.

@TG Loyalty they put a 5 day limit on my first purchase and I wasnt circulating at that time, apologies hoping this did not mean it did not credit for you but a bit fearful it did! Apologies…

  • Anna says:

BA has emailed me saying our seats have been changed on our return leg from GCM next August, which confused me as we hadn’t selected seats yet, being only Bronze. When looking on MMB it says the flight itslef has changed, to the following day! Has BA totally lost the plot now?

    • Anna says:

And our domestic connection to MAN (on the same PNR) is still listed as being on the original return date. 🙄 Oh dear Lord, I’m going to have to call them, aren’t I? Am I right in thinking I can just leave this till nearer the time and nothing will happen?!

    • Mouse says:

I also had a cancellation and rebooking come through as a seat change today

  • Navara says:

Looks like they do here’s another code 4JD3E6FH

  • Mark says:

I’m having the same issue with the Ihg card free night.
I went well over my spend target and the card year ended in October, I still haven’t received my free night.
I still don’t know what to do or how to resolve/report them.

    • Benilyn says:

Did you check on the IHG website?
Have you received your annual summary PDF under statements?

      • Rob says:

This is a fundamental issue – I think all IHG cardholders are impacted.
