British Airways launches flights from Southampton – 11 routes bookable

  To those comparing fares ex-SOU yesterday, have another look. Mykonos seems to be £135rt pp hand baggage for dates in May I just looked at, was £400+ yesterday. So it looks like the cheap fare buckets may now be added.

  Those of us who live in the Midlands and or the North just read news like this and sigh. Not helped when Rob is quoted (in another article) as saying how good it will be for people ‘flying to their second homes in France’. FFS!

  The other problem I have with SOU is the potential unreliability of carriers, both KL and BA over the years “Now you see us, now you don’t .” While it’s pretty good news from BA/SOU, I suggest you “Watch this space ” in the months to come, BA will be off again.

  Do you expect that the UK, as a third country after 31st December, will be on the list of countries that are exempt from the EU’s general ban on travellers from third countries? I know that this ban is not universally applied throughout the EU as it’s only voluntary at the moment, but it’s something to bear in mind at least.

    A few articles have said that 12 EU countries currently follow the guidelines to the letter but they don’t actually name them. Norway isn’t in the EU but is part of the travel guidance and they’ve confirmed that Brits who don’t live in Norway will be banned from entering for non essential trips

    No, it’s quie unlikely they will be generally exempt from the EU’s recommendation. (But as you say, countries don’t have to follow it, so seems plausible that eg Spain might still let British tourists in.)

  For those who don’t live in London, there are direct trains to Southampton Airport Parkway from Manchester Piccadilly. Journey time from Oxford to Southampton Airport Parkway is around the same as from London Waterloo.

  I suspect the timing options will be a disincentive on this route. We have flights booked to Mykonos from Heathrow for next summer. Wondered if Southampton might be better, but the only flights are outbound on Sunday, return Saturday which is not great if you want to make best use of the weekends at the start and end of the trip to give maximum trip length for days off work.

  All it seems to be doing is to utilise an LCY aircraft that would otherwise be stranded after the Saturday morning inbound as LCY is closed Saturday afternoon/Sunday morning by sending it to Southampton and back instead.
