The HfP chat thread – Monday 7th December

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Stayed at the Langley on saturday night. Spa was very good, but indoor pool closed for maintenance!! Ate dinner in the lounge/bar, as the restaurant is far too stuffy and soulless. Staff seemed v happy to have customers back. It’s still not up to the standards of the Four Seasons Hampshire though….

Also, they said they were open over the summer for a private hire. Sounds like a film studio took the place for 3 months. They were very discreet about any other info though….

    • meta says:

Indoor pool opening on 15 December according to reservation’s team!

    • Rob says:

I think it was built to take guests from the film studios next door to be honest.

    • YC says:

Any status upgrades on a ‘busy’ weekend?

      • Stanley says:

They didnt even mention my gold status! And i’m pretty sure we were given one of the worst rooms they had…..

    • Harry T says:

I was given a reasonable upgrade as Gold but they had just had a mass cancellation due to covid (this was in March). They also gave me 4pm checkout as Gold, which was very kind.

I liked the Churchill bar, so didn’t bother with the restaurant.

It may not be quite Four Seasons Hampshire but you can’t book the FS for 40,000 Bonvoy points!

  • Stanley says:

Yeh, its a great setup for long term private hire. Can just imagine Tom Cruise doing big bombs in to the outdoor pool…. Waitress said it was then re-classified as a “private residence” so all social distancing could be relaxed. But all residents and staff were tested 3 times a week…..

    • Anna says:

I can’t believe they cancelled my 50th birthday weekend for Tom Cruise 🤣🤣🤣

    • Lady London says:

In that case The Langley was pretty naughty when they cancelled existing bookings to clear the hotel for that and did not honour the same points per night people had booked at, to move to another date.

      • George K says:

Golly. When was this, by the way?

I’m -finally- booked for the 14-16th… looking forward to it!

  • ChrisW says:

Virgin 747 event sold out already.

I think they really shot themselves in the foot by only having 50 tickets. Far more disappointed fans than lucky ones!

    • Rob says:

The mistake was charging £50 and not £500. Distancing rules limit numbers.

      • MKB says:

        Fastest bot wins.

It would have been better if they had done £5 raffle tickets with a random draw. Would have made a lot more money for charity.

      • ChrisW says:

Its a lot of set up for just one day though. Why not run multiple daily sessions for a week?

        • Rob says:

It would mean all the people coming along to chat to guests would need to commit for a week.

Virgin is also losing a lot of money on this. The PR is worth it for one day but not a week of losses.

Let’s be clear. VS could have sold 5,000 tickets for this very easily. Even 500 slots would not have made much difference.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Agree far too cheap considering the numbers but the expectations probably would have been higher if it was £500

        • Rob says:

I think the sessions are quite comprehensively specced out so people know what they get, and it is all for charity at the end of the day. At £500 Virgin could probably have rustled up some memorabilia too. I get a feeling, knowing VS, they will deliver more than promised anyway.

  • Catalan says:

    Well that went well.
Virgin 747 Farewell tickets sold out within 2 minutes. Got on the website ok but the time slots showed ‘unavailable’ then ‘sold out’!
    Oh well 🙁

    • FFoxSake says:

Got to payment page then it updated to sold out. Oh well. Happy for those who managed to get a pair of tickets for a great cause. Enjoy!

    • Mikee says:

I managed to select a time and then entered a queue but wasn’t successful. Eventbrite website does say multiple dates although the 12th is the only date currently showing. Maybe they will add more dates bearing in mind this one sold out so quickly.

  • Vit says:

Data point: Fenwick £20 off seems to work fine with cumulative. I say “seems” as I did not order cumulatively but Fenwick charged the items on dispatch.

  • ian_h says:

I’ve seen lots of comments on here about using our bendy friend to get into ernies draws, has anyone any experience of using the same flexible friend into ernies ds account?

    • Holam says:

yes works fine for all NSI products

    • Track says:

If I worked at Curve, I would reach out to NS&I with a list of users for further checks.

      • Lady London says:

Seriously? why would a turkey want Christmas to come early?

      • the_real_a says:

That would be like a vegan working at a Turkey farm.

      • Brian W says:

@Track, you’ve really not thought this through before posting I’m afraid! Those that have can fully understand why Curve would not reach out to NS&I. #Handthatfeedsyou

    • mark2 says:

      Yes, simpler to operate too.

  • Also says:

Anyone have hotel recommendations for Vilnius? Will be paying cash but always happy to earn some points from the booking. Statuses from Amex Plat and IHG in case that affects suggestions. Thanks.

    • Fraser says:

Radisson Blu Royal Astorija overlooking town square, a little bit of a hike from the train station. Good recognition of Gold status.

    • johnny_c-l says:

Crowne Plaza is OK, had a good upgrade from them in the past. Location is a bit out of the way, I seem to remember it being a 20 min walk to the centre. Next to the hotel is a big park which is nice for a morning walk/run.

    • The real John says:

A new HGI opened about a year ago if you want something cheaper

    • Kirsty says:

We stayed at the Kempinksi and absolutely loved it. Great location and beautiful hotel.

    • Denis says:

Amazing hotels located in the very heart of old town: Pacai, Narutis, Stikliai, Astorija. Crowne Plaza next to Vingio Park (perfect for morning runs) is good too. There is also a brand new Hilton Garden Inn in the centre of Vilnius. Enjoy!

    • Also says:

      Thanks all! Much appreciated

    • RH says:

Avoid the strip climb where you have to go downstairs to get in – I got eye-dropped in there when I was a young lad! 😀

  • Rma says:

Re a previous comment by MattB about the difficulty of accessing MMB without clicking in ‘accepting change’, I managed to do this by using the old version of MMB and not the new version which BA are pushing. The old version shows the flight details, new seats etc.
This new version of making you click on ‘accept change’ before you can see the details has similarities with the system some passengers encountered when they were trying to obtain refunds and found themselves inadvertently accepting vouchers.
