We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Before I start trawling old threads, can someone remind me how you double dip Laithwaites – have a good offer after last order to sign up for big red box with their wine club, but also want to spend an extra £35 to hit amex £20 back for £100 spend there and can’t figure out how to get both in the basket at the same time.

    • Chef says:

I don’t think that’s the answer, you can’t add to the order, however you can double dip with Nat west rewards or Airtime if you’re able and possibly virgin?

    • MattB says:

lots of us used the new customer £40 off 12 bottles in conjunction with the amex offer

      • Doogie says:

Yeah I used the 110 on another card which is how I’ve got the big red offer now. Will check natwest/airtime route thanks all 🙂

Hi folks, I asked the community on here about my IHG credit card free night that expires on 31st Dec this year. I wanted to know if I needed to book and stay before the 31st Dec, or would it still be valid to book before 31 Dec, but stay after that date. The consensus was that i only needed to book before 31st Dec for later in 2021. A friend of mine is now insisting that I will lose the voucher if I don’t stay before the end of the year. Can anyone please reassure me on what is correct as I don’t want to lose the use of the voucher, but also don’t want to hurry to use it unless its for somewhere I really would like to stay at next year.

    • memesweeper says:

It is book not stay. However, if you book you cannot then flex beyond the date of expiry. You can cancel and rebook at will within the date of expiry.

Anyone interested in the outcome of my hotel cleanliness issue at the end of last week. Initially we got the first night comped by front desk along with a bottle of wine and I was told the manager would like to have a chat. We spoke later that afternoon and he comped the second night. This was on a 3 for 2 with $100 credit so our 3 night stay, dinner and drinks was free. The response was definitely above and beyond what I was expecting

      No.

    • Harry T says:

That’s pretty bloody good service recovery.

      • Josh says:

Although if you complain once too often at Hilton brands they have no qualms about shutting down your account it seems.

    • Doug M says:

      Good outcome for you. Excellent.

    • Lady London says:

      Ha. I was right then.

Was it @MattB that posted that wonderful advice to you? Had me quaking in my boots and as expected the manager comped you your second night too 🙂

      • Anthony says:

In all honesty, I barely said a thing. We found it late at night, phoned reception to make them aware of it and said we’d sort it in the morning. Went down for breakfast and the front desk grabbed us on the way back to our room to say they’d deal with it. Went out for the day, got back and got up to the room and noticed a bottle of wine and a letter saying the night was comped. Not long after we got a call from the manager saying that he’d like to talk. Spoke to him and he comped the second night without me saying anything and moved us to another room

  • Vit says:

Sorry if this has been covered before but does buying Selfridges e-giftcard online trigger the £30 back offer? As their GC does not have expiry date, gonna use it later next year online anyway. TIA.

  • Clive says:

Know a few of you are due a new Curve. Mine arrived today with some stickers 🙂

  • robman says:

Hi there, hoping that I could get some reassurance from the community regarding a question I asked on here a couple of days ago. I have an IHG credit card free night which expires on 31st Dec this year. I asked earlier whether I had to book and stay prior to the end of the year or whether I could book before the end of the year for a stay later in 2021. The opinion that I got from here was that it was ok to book before 31 Dec for a later stay after that date. I checked with a knowledgeable friend who told me something different, – that I would lose the voucher if I don’t use it before the end of the year. So now I am confused. Please can anyone tell me what the correct situation is as I don’t want to lose or waste the voucher. Many thanks.

    • KevMc says:

You just need to BOOK by 31sr December. I have done the same today for stay in the IC Park Lane in July.

    • Genghis says:

Just book. Your friend is not knowledgeable on this.

      • Peter K says:

+1 it’s 100% booked by, not stay by. Have done this more than once.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      knowledgeable friend

Unfortunately they are not. HFP >>> your friend.

  • Grimz says:

Can someone advise my best options? I have just had an email from BA saying my 1st class seats on a 241 to Phoenix have been cancelled. I have been rebooked onto the same flight in club. It looks like it is a change of plane to A350. My return was in club from San Diego and the only change there is it arrives 5 mins earlier into LHR. It says I need to confirm in ‘manage my booking’ or choose alternative flights.

    • Andrew says:

Probably best to just cancel – unlikely to be able to travel anyway.

      • Grimz says:

Sorry I should have said this is for September 2021

        • Chris Heyes says:

Grimz OOOooo dear I have a return flight from Phoenix end of Aug 21
not looking good then. Flight going is to Denver

          • Grimz says:

I think I am in a good position TBH as I am now in club suite and I should be able to get some kind of compensation I hope for the downgrade.

          • Lady London says:

H*ll yes @Grimz fly it and go for the 75% back. It’s come up a *lot* on this daily thread. You only have to read it today and max of previous 2 days to get what you need to do. To get the previous days look in last pararaph of the article above for the link.

    • Lady London says:

PS practically, do nothing and your flights as displayed on your booking will still be there when you go to the airport. I never confirm a flight change as it keeps open your options.

If you want a seat reservation crack it from Finnair website access, work out how to access old MMB as another poster here today said they got to work, or if you really musy, call BA. If you call take care any discussion of your downgrade to Club includes a statement from you making it clear it’s involuntary.

I personally would not accept any cash or avios at this point (they might try to offer you the difference between classes but that’sa fraction of what the downgrade compo is worth) as I would want to avoid any appearance of having “settled” but Rob has said it’s fine.

As you say you have to fly it to claim the compo and there’s a lot that can still change.

      • Grimz says:

that’s great thanks for the reply. I was worried that if I did nothing and arrived for my flights they would have been cancelled.
